I've discovered the broken bolts appear to be a pattern problem in this era Sony sets that throws the flyback tuning off killing the driving components. This video is several months old but no less relevant or educational or entertainment for those who need their Saturday morning he's forever playing near blenders usually Oroville flourish lamp

i think they break at the weekest point(where the thread ends) and possibly its down to thermal expantion and contraction over 30 odd years

If you get up on Facebook vintage tv forum, I've got a couple Trinnys that show delamination and and PVA rot like mold. I know you picked up a couple of those KV 1722 S. I've got 2 of the same that both have PVA rot starting I've got a 15" that's really bad really bad.. Interesting that PVA rot and delamination are hitting these as well.. Also what seems to be breaking the U bolts I believe are heat cycles (I believe) anyway. Weakest part is the bend. Wrong temper on material. Etc..

Really enjoyed this one. The interconnected complexity of these sets is something else. Really impressed you were able to fix this one. Those easily blown up HOTs would have defeated me.
Using two zenors in parallel has its own issues. There's always slight variably and one will often end up doing more work than the other. Not that it matters, because later in the video we learnt in normal use they don't actually conduct anyway. And you didn't end up using this board.

Too bad about the gray and white cat, I guess he finally carbon tracked too far. Videos are fantastic and addictive they've taught me a lot in the past few months got my old television running better than it ever has and I've owned it for about 27 years 72 space command 100 19 in color. Changed all the tubes most of them were bad or almost bad, checked cathode current and high voltage both are acceptable it should work for me until it starts blowing capacitors and resistors, hopefully by then I'll be educated enough by your videos to even attempt anything like that.

My daughter is a cat person. After my good wife passed away a couple of years ago, my daughter moved in to take care of the crippled up man who is her father. With her came a couple of cats! Now about a week after my good wife died another cat person, who rehomes strays brought her a little white kitten with a black spot on his head. One ear was damaged by a cruel dog who picked him up by the ear and nearly tore it off. Now that little guy decided I was his person and has cared for me at all hours, day and night since. The little guy who would fit in the palm of my hand when he came is now over 18 pounds and has all the markings and attitude of the Turkish Van cat. Can't prove he is, and when we questioned some in the van cat talk group they exclaim that NOBODY could come bay a pure breed Van cat as a Stray, they are to valuable for anyone to allow them to hit the streets, even in a large city in the Oil Patch of North Dakota. So what ever he is, he cares for me, keeps me warm, day and night, he is just becoming a pest like those damn black flies that hang around you and you just can't get rid of them. (I think I must be becoming a cat person?)

The tape between the transformer core halfs isnt isolation, its to introduce an air gap, said gap decreases the inductance of the windings and increases the magnetic flux density that the core can handle.
In other words they can use less core material and less copper wire. If the drive current is too low that could be the gap is too little causing too high inductance.

we always stared them on a variac , 9 times out ten a big bucket of caps and a bucket of sand to put the flames out they were great sets , we had about 4 of the early kv1810ub ins took as a loan set for customers just big enough to please them and not quite to heavy to lug around , over the years as the lamps went south on them we started replacing replacing the sets with the later version the kv1820 , they were even more sensitive to blowing up the scr and at the time the copy ones were absolute junk so it was always best to use genuine sony ones

Sony Trinitron TVs had the best picture on the market. We had a couple different ones growing up. We had one just like this, and a newer one. The second one was from the mid 80s, and was very expensive at the time. I believe we paid around $600 for it. It must have been a rare model because I have never found another one just like it.

My father bought this very model package that came together with a separate Betamax unit. They used to sell both at a discounted price.
    That was in 1979.
We’d never seen those colors before. They were perfect!
My father (RIP) always said that LCDs were no match to the beauty of analog Trinitrons, especially this model. He didnt like the sound of CDs either. Now I’m understanding why.
I used to record:”Midnight Special” and “Dallas” using our Betamax. My older brother , though, was caught with an XXX rated tape.
Oh Boy , my Mom wanted to get rid of that “useless” box right away.

Its amazing how finely tuned the flybacks are in these sets but its annoying how it blows out the SCR when no longer tuned. I have a bunch of 70's and 80's Sony TVs and right now they all work. I did have to repair some of them. I remember years ago when I was repairing these a lot of them had dead CRTs. Its true that you must never rejuvenate Sony CRTs but you can do a remove shorts which may bring them back.

I successfully rejuvenated the modern trinitron crt's, the video is usually blanked when the crt goes weak because the jungle circuit cant bias the CRT. The era im talking about is sony late 1990s-2006. Also on projection tubes from this time they liked to have intermittent shorts, tap the neck and watch the color flash and the neck light up inside. Generally for shorted tubes I do the isolated filament trick, wrap a few turns of wire around the flyback and disconnect the filament circuit from the fly. Now the old tubes from this time I don't think its a good idea, strange gun, i tried it years ago on a known weak tube it finshed it off. When sony went to the 3 gun inline gun like everyone else had for years I havent had any issues zapping them, they usually lasted 6 months to a year.....depending on how much they used it.

Watching Shango do tv repair I just “ zone out” and maybe have a few lsd flashbacks thinking “ this guy is deep”. I sit and wonder who the fu_k designed this sh__ . Ya, 5 years + of watching Shango do this stuff still not understanding what he’s saying and still thinking ‘ this guy is deep’ ✌️😎

Back in 74 I went into a store (GLOBE Shopping City) in El Paso Texas and purchased a model TV A bit smaller then that but had the same touch tuning. I was Stationed out at Fort Bliss. We used the TV from then on (it was our first COLOR and our first NEW TV) through my tour with the 3rd Cav then stationed at Bliss, through my tour with The Old Guard in Fort Myer (I lived off base in Arlington Va.) (Mayflower moved it from TX to VA) then in 1977 I was transferred to Minnesota as a recruiter, the TV was moved by Allied Van Lines to Cottonwood MN. and it served us Till I separated from the US Army in December 1977, it was moved by Allied to my home in Lemmon SD. When I settled in with my job as a police officer, we saved up a bit and purchased a bigger set in 1979 and I gave the set to my sister who used it until the flat screens came down to an affordable price in 2012. The set was never serviced, and suffered those moves without breaking. I would say I got my money out of it! They were great sets and the color was unsurpassable even today with the flat screen sets, and mine is fairly expensive JVC set.

Sorry to hear about old Grey going EOL, the female cat may have worms, but also strays and stressed un-fixed females tend to eat an unexpected amount. If someone got her fixed she’d be three times the size and eating the same

Stray cats almost always suffer intestinal parasites. Not just mainstream worms. Also toxins exposure. Outdoors is considerably more stress, but they can get by decently if fed.

I had one of those in the 1980s...a Very good TV for TV DXing...in California I all the way to Montana on channel 3...and Colorado on channel 4....I got 2500 miles max. From My area in Los Angeles...I wish I could do that still.... mine had channel 1-12....I was able to tune it all the way down to 45mhz for Australia and Korea..then I got a All Channel Panasonic later... also for TV DXing too... very good sets to have

I have a 2000 Trinitron with a jillion hours on it. The jug had gone completely flat about 3 years ago. The CRT heaters run off a flyback winding with a series resistor of about 2.7 ohms. It's on the CRT socket board. Jumpered the resistor so the heaters run hotter. Emission came back to like new, perfect grey scale and beautiful pic to this day. That series resistor seems to be common practice across many brands with flyback-derived heater supply.

My grandma and grandpa had this TV on their farm when I was about 5 or so! I know it sounds funny but I want to just push the channel buttons. I swear I can remember how those buttons feel in my head. When you opened the door on the front in this video, I remembered what that looked like too!
My dad used to work on tvs... Well, he built a Heathkit tv and tried to fix them for people he knew or when ours died. I want to say I even remember the inside of the tv because I remember it losing vertical hold when I was like 10 or so and he took it apart.

I had a TV shop when these were not retro. When the SCR and regululator were shorted, knew I was in for a ride. Fixed a few but eventually the price was too high. Later on didn't even continue if the Scr was shorted. I'm in a metro area and would refer customers to the local Sony service center.

the stuff between the core halves would be to gap it and control the inductance, and not to insulate it or stop it making noise. The thickness is relatively critical. curious if they tune those at the factory that way or if it's a standard gap.

    • @brainndamage
      @brainndamage 2 года назад

Determined empirically, optimized experimentally, then fixed in the design for manufacturing. If you think about it, the core material doesn't change, the winding turns and configuration don't change, so there's no need to tune the gap for each transformer in a manufacturing run.

Thanks for messing with the old flyback too, I was curious if it was JUST the bolt, and what difference that made.
