Thank you for watching. Sugarcane is so much fun, and very easy to grow! You can often get canes from farmer's markets and Oriental/International markets at this time of year. See my vids on propagation to start a bunch of it! Also, Daisy has a limited about of sugarcane available in her store: www.etsy.com/shop/GoodGardens Hope you're having a great week. -DTG
I was about to ask where you can get sugar cane, but see you can forsee upcoming questions 😊 I love your sense of humor and your channel. Keep them coming!
I planted like you last year, and something {raccoons I think} dug up every single one. This year I'm building wire cages around them, and over them. I'm planting in groups of about 4, instead of a row.
I never thought about growing sugar cane in Virginia but now you have me thinking about it. I'd have to do it in big pots and have a small harvest but I don't need much. I didn't know it's so easy to plant. Looks similar to planting yuca/casava. I learned about that when I lived in Costa Rica. We turned a few plants into a field of yuca one day and I planted it every time I harvested in several places. I don't know about getting canes to start with in VA or if burying them in pots would work. I don't think I could get yuca to grow big enough to harvest up here. Sad.
Mandatory DTG comment for the AI....Hey yall I do love me some sugar cane. Any other plants we need to plant now in the fall for spring time success? 😀🌱🐢
I can’t source sugar cane locally. 😓 I tried for the past month.😭 Either way in my case i would prefer to keep it contained (but still in ground with that plastic we put in the soil in such cases) to avoid spreading all over the farm. 😬

My father used to bring these home, and we would chew on the sweetness! It was another level of the things that nature provides!

So, by just the thumbnail, I see that I am not the only Southerner who gardens in socks and sandals.😋
Good job David
Had no idea but I planted mine last week. Guess my instincts are good.
Just had a good rain think ill give it a day or two to dry out then plant all my sugarcane from scrubfest. Thanks David and Good family.
Cheers from France ❤🎉
Commenting because sis told me 😘🙏👋
That is hilarious
❤ a baby bobcat! I love my bobcat!
You had me with the bobcat. I expected a real furry bobcat wandering through the vid not a digger lol😂
Any day is sugarcane planting day here! Zone 12 lol😂

Been thinking of planting some this year after discovering there is a 100 year old sugar mill still standing a mile from me. Osceola county is silly.
David is playing _zero_ games today
@6:30 I coulda swore I saw a hand coming up out of the ground...
I like your shoes
My Pilgrim ancestors thank thee.
Hawaii is paradise for can so I just dumped my sugarcane on the side of my houselot and we get choke now. 😂
Sweet
What specific type of sugar cane will grow in Zone 7? Are you near that climate?
Great question, i am also curious...
To my knowledge it is only possible to grow Sweet Sorghum in zone 7....
We are 8b. Any cane should grow there if you mulch it well over winter.
@davidthegood Thank you, sir!
So enough mulch will prevent the freezing of the stalks ?
Everything above ground freezes. We harvest before frost here.

Garlic. Jerusalem artichokes, too.
No dig 😂 i forgive as planting a big plot alone is hard by hand😊 btw i did test just stick then under the mulch and they grow
Will sugar cane grow in zone 6b?
Yes I'd like to know too. I'm in south central PA
It's possible, but you'll likely have better luck with sorghum.
@davidthegood Thanks David. I appreciate your reply.
Can I just buy sugar cane from a grocery store and plant it? I wouldn't know where to even look for it in Western WA otherwise.
I did and it grew good but didnt over winter good so keep it covered good to insular it good my local older type cane over winters very good
Yes, you can, if the buds on the canes are intact. Sometimes they are stripped off.
@steveclayburn5354 sweet maybe I will give it a shot. Not like I need it as a diabetic but friends and family could.
