As a person who plays literally any game no matter how bad it looks to form my own opinion, I would like to say the following: In Dragon Age: Origins, I found myself immediately interested in all of the characters. I wanted to get to know them, I wanted to learn what their story was, and in multiple playthroughs I checked out more dialogue with them, found out their loves and hates. In Dragon Age 2, I did the same. While the game was less fun combat-wise, I still found myself really intrigued by the characters. In Dragon Age Inquisition, I kept changing my race and starting over just to see new dialogue and was fascinated by how much changed just based on that, seeing entire new parts of the game open or close, seeing entire cutscenes redone based on if I was a dwarf or not, and I was still so intrigued by all the characters that I had to get to know them all. In Dragon Age Veilguard, I just felt like every single character, all of them, ALL OF THEM, were not talking to my character but to me, the player. None of them felt like they had any interesting qualities about them that made me want to get to know them, you know why? Because I already know people in real life who are like them, and they FUCKING SUCK. They're the hardest people on earth to talk to, they get offended by every other thing you say, there's always this awkward walking-on-eggshells tension in the air, nobody can be themselves because that one person in the room who's so obsessed with their own identity's "protection" that they're gonna make a scene and get offended and awkward every time anyone says fucking anything near them. I can give Veilguard a huge plus in perfectly replicating how fucking uncomfortable it is to hang out with people like this. In Short: The characters of previous entries in Dragon Age were characters who live in a fantasy world and their drives and ambitions reflect the world they live in. The characters in Veilguard are from California.
Now I know why canonically Grey Warden fucks off into the distant beyond never to return. The Fifth Blight might've ended, but it still corrupted the lands beyond repair.
