Yeah, and it definitely did a lot to sort of reconcile the problematic way they’ve portrayed this subject in the past, it’s not perfect, but I think some of it being politically incorrect actually works bc of the context of which characters are saying it, like the “you’re a woman/man now” stuff. It definitely makes sense that realistically the types of people who spoke like that on the show would in real life as well. Also, the businesses having performative inclusivity policies but then turning around and overstepping employee boundaries is dangerously accurate, not quite to the extreme extent the show portrayed, but still an issue definitely
I really loved this episode and the speech Ida gives Peter when they talk. I loved Ida and her story throughout the show, it felt really real and raw to me. Especially how Quagmire had to come to terms with it and his growth throughout.
Yo I agree, regardless of if it’s in family guy or a serious show like grey’s anatomy representation is important and I’m glad they didn’t just end with trans and queer people being the punch line like many comedies do.
This is what I love about Family Guy. Peter is the dumb one who gets himself into problematic situations, but there's always the other main characters to set him straight. Brian and Lois especially are the Politically Correct ones who always tell Peter when he's doing wrong! Always a lesson in there.
the thing that annoys me is i know people who will watch this ep and just be laughing because they think peter is in the right with the way he talks about it, or that trans people in general are ridiculous, and all the stuff they try to put in there to educate is gonna fly way over their heads. family guy has only ever been a hindrance to getting others to understand LGBTQ+ for me, i don't watch it and haven't since i was a kid but i hope they've made a more consistent change in their approach to these things
this is actually 10/10 for me because it shows that being trans isn’t just for social wokess points or just dressing like the “opposite” sex. absolutely wonderful moral of the story.
Family Guy did with transition what The Simpsons couldn’t do with feminism: creating an entertaining chapter with a “taboo” theme, not leaving the “taboo” people as the bad guys, balancing satire with real life situations and on top of that, having a satisfying resolution.
I think South Park generally is the best at handling these topics in general tbh I’m not a fan of feminism nor the pride movement as I’ve felt left behind and walked away from the movements as ideals have changed that I can no longer agree with despite being a member that they “are advocating for”
Sorry to hear about that especially with so much emotional investment involved. It sucks but at least you know now who your true friends are. When my cousin came out as gay his entire fathers side disowned him and they rescinded their willingness to financially support his higher education. 10+ years later and he's working in the medical field and is one of the hardest and most caring people I've ever known (although I already knew that). Its not good to let things like this affect you in a negative way so the lesson here is to use their 'hate' to motivate you to be better than and beyond what they are capable of seeing and understanding. Love not hate is what makes this world better.
The same happened to me, my mother told me if I hadn't an "extremist" point of view I would have more friends nowadays. Even though is not my fault if the world is full of transphobic and ignorant people
I honestly didn’t mind the “finally a woman” thing cuz lots of well-meaning cis people talk like that out of ignorance. It’s so close to real. I’m honestly and surprisingly impressed. The episode was really sincere. Family Guy-crass, but sincere.
@@foxyrocky7522 that’s why it’s important to discern the persons intent behind what they’re saying. Some people genuinely mean it in a way like.. “this is who you were meant to be.” There’s still work that can be done but it’s progress
@@serpentenya honestly it doesn’t matter how you MEANT it, because people can’t see what you meant. Only of how it actually comes out, and how it comes out is like “you have gotten surgery you are now an ACTUAL woman and everyone who doesn’t aren’t real women and aren’t valid in themselves”. That’s exactly what it means, even if you might not intend for it to sound that way. Some people actually do think like that, as if surgery makes you something or not, that’s why they say that line. You have to think about how it actually comes out and picking your words carefully
Brian is hypocritical that’s his character. Identifies as liberal but has conservative values. Has prejudices and biases that he doesn’t keep in check and is actually dangerous. Say they support equality and feminism and all that but actively shows that he actually feels differently with his actions and how he reacts to things. He’s also constantly using people like Stewie and the women he dates. He can manipulative and toxic, and kinda represents s lot of people who identify as liberal just to fit in but actually has a lot of bias and prejudices he’s not willing to check or fix. Unaware of himself. Someone else in the comments explained it better than me.
It reminds me when more than a decade ago when I was a child and my mom was watching TV at lunchtime and passed an episode of Family Guy where Maggie in the future "became" a man (tans man), it was an episode with kind of offensive humor and I remember feeling bad (because I am genderfluid and at the time I really wanted to "be a boy" and I didn’t know what transgender and genderfluid were), and seeing my mother laughing and seeing how they represented it on TV made me feel like a thing to be ashamed of. It is good that at least they tried to take responsibility for the issues of trans cominity in the lines of some pernagens, even though it is Family Guy (cause doing a adult "dark humor" cartoon it is no excuse to be prejudicious). Sorry my rusty english
You mean the Stewie feature length DVD movie where Meg becomes Ron? Yeah. On the one hand it was played for laughs as "oh look, a transgender" but it also showed the rest of the Griffins just going along & accepting, not treating Ron any different to how they did before.
yep, you never know if when youre being judgemental or reacting fondly to things that are, who around you may be impacted by that 😔 sorry u went through that, as a trans masc enby myself
I literally saw an episode where Peter pissed on the internet (he thought it was a “Japanese” bathroom) and a trans guy (who supposedly owns the internet) was extremely impressed.
Family guy has a permanent Trans character in Ida, Quagmire's father who transitions into a woman. They poke a lot of fun obviously bc its family guy but they also have Quagmire not handle it very well and they have to work out their relationship afterwards. Her speech was perfect in this episode!
Hello everyone, I have you are all having a fantastic week. If something bad is going on it will get better, maybe not tomorrow but it will. You are a valid, lovely person who deserves everything good in life. This is a accepting community and I care about all of you. If you need help I am here for you, have a great day.
Thanks I appreciate that. I’m not sure my depression is gonna let me be happy for some time right now but I do believe I that it will hopefully get better for everyone and me:)
I’d really like to see you react to the Fairly Odd Parents episode ‘The Boy Who Would Be Queen’. Basically, the premise is that Timmy wishes he was a girl so he would know what girls like.
Genuinely surprised about how they handled this... It definitely still is Family Guy humour, it doesn't go too far away from its usual jokes, BUT it is still very clearly at least TRYING to be better (whether by choice or to avoid controversy... either way, I like this...) Also, love the necklace sooooo much, so cute, so Taurus!
I remember watching this a while ago and didn't think much from it. But now, learning more things, and having Samantha cleaning up some areas, I think I learned a little something from it and now find a little meaning in the episode rather than it just being another skit.
I do feel like the point of, “you’re a man again because you have male genitalia” might be commentary from family guy about what cis people think transness is. Those who aren’t active in the communities or actively learning may think every trans person wants to transition. Or it could just be family guy dropping the ball a bit, who knows.
I mean it's definitely a step up from characters vomiting for nearly a minute when they find out they've slept with a trans woman Still feel like Seth MacFarlane needs a tiny bit more education after watching certain parts of family guy and Orville. But he seems like he's absolutely trying now, which is amazing
That was because Brain doesn't really care about the stuff he talks about. He claims he's all for this or that but then when it's time to own up, most of the time he can't. It highlighted that very well. Especially since he prides himself on being left and supporting all marginalized groups. My aunt is the same way and she'd probably have the same reaction if she slept with a guy and found out he was trans.
To be fair, though I’m not one to go up to bat in self defense for Seth, he didn’t write that episode. Of course, he still had to do the voice acting soooo... 😬
Yeah but this isn't the first trans character in this show, obviously, and there's been some super insensitive stuff on there in the past. I don't know if he wrote the other scenes I have in mind, and I guess I should do more research on his writing contributions to the Orville but it's implied he's at least a co-writer If anyone's seen the plotline I'm referring to in that show (The Orville), I go back and forth with it seeming like he could be supportive or mocking, it's vague to me. It's just not super clear in the parallel that's been created, which characters are representing which opinions, if transphobia is actually the comparison that's being attempted with Bortus' family.

as a long time viewer of family guy and seeing the writing progress to be meaningful now in each episode has made me really enjoy watching the show again . Some of the newest episodes really point out flaws and differences in society and the nasty parts as well . The creators ofc like u said still have to be "family guy" but now you can really see how much they really stand up to and call out . i recommend anyone seeing my comment to watch the newer seasons and take a look at what i mean . 💖💖💖
Same, I’ve been watching since I was maybe 5/6 (my parents worked a lot so no parental supervision lol) and the scripts on certain topics like this are actually well written. Some episodes are extremely lazy with writing with the 300 cutaways per episodes but they really did well this episode. They fit humor in with education, which isn’t easy. Bravo to them 💕
@@Feliciatanktop haha its true though ! i have read from a few articles from adult animation creators and most of them comments about their own personal growth as seasons go on . I remember reading that the creators of South Park wish they could shove off their beginner seasons . They do not find the humor funny or worthwhile now . There is a lot more to it but thats the basic run-down . All in all , its amazing to see growth in shows that only used toilet humor and bad puns turn into something that tells a deep meaning while still keeping original charm . 😄
Family Guy could always pull of topics like that, those episodes were just scattered cause the show wasn't designed to educate. It was made to offend. For example, in 2009 there was an episode called Family Gay. Basically Peter got paid to allow scientists to do testing on him. One of the tests was the 'gay gene'. Temporarily, Peter was a flamboyant gay man. It still made fun of all the stereotypes but also shed some light on stuff, like how Peter literally had no control over his sexuality at the time. And I remember at one point Lois loved having him around until he refused to sleep with her because he wasn't attracted to woman. It reminds me of the whole 'gay guys are so hot'/'I want a gay best friend' stuff.
@@icebear1138 hmm i see what you mean . Like you said the topics are scattered in the earlier seasons which is expected in a shows first growing period . Totally give credit to them about that . What makes the show better on those topics , i feel , is the characters themselves having grown so it makes more sense to display the topics so it isnt so ... hmm .. watered-down ? In that episode with the "gay gene " I personally feel that the characters are only playing the message but aren't being the message . I am very happy about the fact it seems more realistic for these topics to be portrayed because the characters have a lot more characteristics and personality to make the point a lot more noticeable . In general though the show is still hella and im just glad its still watchable to this day and thats the best to come out of all of this ! 😄
The only problem I see other than what you mentioned is that Ida's monologue could be read as transmedicalist, saying that "real" trans people have to suffer in order to be seen as valid, when some trans people don't necessarily suffer. But it's a minor thing really, I think this episode helps normalise the trans experience and I'd rather have this than nothing.
For about a decade or so when I was questioning my gender identity was I knew of trangender was but I didn't know about bigender/non-binary. Hence, with myself being the latter, it took longer to figure out my gender identity.

i love family guy. thank you so much for being able to see the humor in all of this! i find some people are so overly critical of family guy and fail to grasp that they're critiquing problematic behaviors (like peter pretending to be trans in order to exploit the benefits outlined in this episode) rather than endorsing it. really refreshing to see someone who is trans (like myself) be able to enjoy this show! i love you and i love your channel. keep up the amazing work!

I really loved this episode and the speech Ida gives Peter when they talk. I loved Ida and her story throughout the show, it felt really real and raw to me. Especially how Quagmire had to come to terms with it and his growth throughout.
@Obi One Obviously? What's your point?
Propaganda. Nothing more, nothing less
@@ronoli9733 Family Guy....Family Guy is propaganda?
@Obi One Oh, sorry. You're right. I forgot cartoons can't talk about serious topics. You're right, thats my bad, chief.
Always a lesson in there.
not always, but here it's not purposefully mocking tr@ns people unlike "quagmires dad"

the thing that annoys me is i know people who will watch this ep and just be laughing because they think peter is in the right with the way he talks about it, or that trans people in general are ridiculous, and all the stuff they try to put in there to educate is gonna fly way over their heads. family guy has only ever been a hindrance to getting others to understand LGBTQ+ for me, i don't watch it and haven't since i was a kid but i hope they've made a more consistent change in their approach to these things
@@bandamani Yeah that’s why I hate these kind of shows

this is actually 10/10 for me because it shows that being trans isn’t just for social wokess points or just dressing like the “opposite” sex. absolutely wonderful moral of the story.
Agreed
Family Guy did with transition what The Simpsons couldn’t do with feminism: creating an entertaining chapter with a “taboo” theme, not leaving the “taboo” people as the bad guys, balancing satire with real life situations and on top of that, having a satisfying resolution.
I think South Park generally is the best at handling these topics in general tbh I’m not a fan of feminism nor the pride movement as I’ve felt left behind and walked away from the movements as ideals have changed that I can no longer agree with despite being a member that they “are advocating for”

🥺
god parents are really dumb, must've been stressful to deal with :-(
All my friends are members of the LGBTQIA+
Even though is not my fault if the world is full of transphobic and ignorant people
LOL “Peter? Patricia? Peatrice?” 🤣🤣

I haven't seen Family Guy since I was like seven, but this was a fun reintroduction. Quagmire's mother is beautiful.
Quagmire's mother is still alive? Hes in his late 70s!
I honestly didn’t mind the “finally a woman” thing cuz lots of well-meaning cis people talk like that out of ignorance. It’s so close to real.
I’m honestly and surprisingly impressed. The episode was really sincere. Family Guy-crass, but sincere.

Brian is one to talk after he was vehemently disgusted by Quagmire's dad. I mean, room for personal growth, but this feels hypocritical.
Well thats what Brian is all the time. Hypocritical.
Brian is basically a mouthpiece for the writers and so he will change depending who is behind.
Brian is the worst character of the show. He causes most of the problems because of his selfishness.
@@angryfence3928 "Identifies as liberal but has conservative values."

I think the doctors saying "you're officially a woman was was written like that on purpose bc the people were trying to act inclusive around him
It reminds me when more than a decade ago when I was a child and my mom was watching TV at lunchtime and passed an episode of Family Guy where Maggie in the future "became" a man (tans man), it was an episode with kind of offensive humor and I remember feeling bad (because I am genderfluid and at the time I really wanted to "be a boy" and I didn’t know what transgender and genderfluid were), and seeing my mother laughing and seeing how they represented it on TV made me feel like a thing to be ashamed of.

Ok but why did Ida's story make me tear up

Hey I have some news for you on how repression works lol...
I mean it's definitely a step up from characters vomiting for nearly a minute when they find out they've slept with a trans woman
Still feel like Seth MacFarlane needs a tiny bit more education after watching certain parts of family guy and Orville.
He didn’t write an episode of family guy since 2010 so thank the modern writers of family guy,
To be fair, though I’m not one to go up to bat in self defense for Seth, he didn’t write that episode. Of course, he still had to do the voice acting soooo... 😬
Yeah but this isn't the first trans character in this show, obviously, and there's been some super insensitive stuff on there in the past. I don't know if he wrote the other scenes I have in mind, and I guess I should do more research on his writing contributions to the Orville but it's implied he's at least a co-writer
If anyone's seen the plotline I'm referring to in that show (The Orville), I go back and forth with it seeming like he could be supportive or mocking, it's vague to me.
It's just not super clear in the parallel that's been created, which characters are representing which opinions, if transphobia is actually the comparison that's being attempted with Bortus' family.
I love Ida in this episode soo much.

as a long time viewer of family guy and seeing the writing progress to be meaningful now in each episode has made me really enjoy watching the show again .
