- We dig deep into the Ezra Edelman's Netflix Prince documentary to break down a side by side comparison of the pros and cons of the stifled release and how it could potentially affect his legacy.
Lord have mercy he was young you dont always do the right thing as a young person!!! If it wasnt for him none of these people would have a career...be grateful for that and shut up!!!
If things were so bad, why did Jill continue to work with and sleep with him for another 6 years? She apparentley says she’s still furious and still processing the stress of being involved with him! Nobody made you stick around, Jill. He didn’t make any secrets about all the women he was involved with! That’s why Vanity got out as she couldn’t deal with it. And if you’re so furious, why write a song called ‘I Miss You’ and produce an emotional video implying you’re heartbroken and he was your best friend? Also she was sleeping with Albert Magnoli!

I just hope that Jill is ready for the backlash and the sea of people shaking their heads! I bet it’s not just us, the purple army, that feel this way but I am sure many of his friends and alumni that love him and have spoken about him with respect and love since he was cruelly taken away from us, will be feeling the same!
Just to mention a few things about the interviewer and his motivation ….. these words are taken from the actual NYT piece!
He has ‘ supreme skill as an interviewer, how he builds rapport with his subjects, prodding them to reveal shockingly honest feelings about their lives. His method is simple but profound: preparation and duration…..when he is in the room with an interview subject - often for many hours at a time….He knows so much about the people he is speaking to that he disarms them….You see people thinking on camera, and their buried memories begin to surface.
Prodding them? For many hours? Disarms them? Sounds more like a freakin’ interrogation to me!!!
Also i would like to add, Princes actual death scene is included in the documentary with ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ playing in the background!! Just because it mentions the elevator! What the actual f!!!!!
Anyway watch Jills video, listen to the lyrics and tell me if this sounds like she’s furious and still processing the stress of being involved with him! I think not!

She was held to a contract until 1992 in all fairness. But the relationship part is valid. Really, I think she has some valid reasons to be bitter but I also think she should probably take a little more personal responsibility. Plus, I personally dislike her jumping on the mourning bandwagon, only to apparently do a 180 now. Also, I dislike how they ignore her career issues and place all the blame on him for her post-prince years. She was still in her 20's when she got out of that contract. She was not dried up. Also, people saying she only talks about him when asked are full of it. I used to follow her. She throws him around for a lot of things. When she had issues with the Revolution, she used her supposed defense of him to shade them. She has blamed him for her later relationship with an abusive partner ( (a relationship she bailed on quickly) by saying he laid the blueprint for how she got into later relationships and now she is implying that her autoimmune disease is his fault as well.
I held hands with Prince at a venue in Canada. He was speaking to some musicians and when I walked up to eavesdrop, he held my hand without stopping what he was saying. He reminded me of a vampire.

Why people think famous people or geniuses are supposed to be perfect is ignorant imo. It's the flaws that make his genius even more incredible.

And I actually think releasing it would be good for them because people would go listen to his music & be interested in him more. I think he started with a dependency on drugs due to injuries & pain & then became addicted after his son died. Just my opinion. Makes sense & actually makes me feel a lot of empathy for him. People think fame is amazing but it's a monster that isolates. It's not a normal way to live. I hope they release it but I'd be shocked if they did - they're too busy selling purple rain galoahes & riding the PR movie for as many years as possible. It's gross.

I was not physically attracted to him though I can definitely see why many people were & are. He was & is an artistic inspiration to me.

Jill Jones has apparently: destroyed Prince’s/ Susannah Melvoin’s paintings, slammed a car door onto a woman’s leg (one that Prince was interested in), thrown a woman into a fireplace (apparently she admitted this) and has also said: “People would be surprised that I have a really, really crazy temper. Maybe they wouldn't be surprised at a hot temper.”. Mayte has said that Prince was never violent to a single person in the decade she knew him.. So who is the common denominator? Prince reacting with a punch after Jill Jones admits to hitting him first and then “tussling” isn’t the same thing as him being an abuser. Prince was 5’2 and Jill is 5’9. They were both wrong in the situation, but Jill instigated the abuse- not Prince! Also, the writer of the article has said in a podcast that there’s nothing that bad in the documentary, no serious allegations- the Jill incident is the worst claim. Also, she said many women loved working with Prince and that she wasn’t a fan until seeing the documentary, and has watched it multiple times. She seemed passionate about him and stated that it’s a shame it’s not coming out because Prince is very relevant for modern times.

@@g-love6507 I don’t idolise Prince nor Jill Jones. I just hate it when people over exaggerate or judge situations without context. Instantly jumping to condemnation, to try to feel morally superior. Balance exists in life and in most situations. I just wrote what information I know. If you think that’s idolisation, then ok. Everyone deserves to have a fair analysis instead of just being bashed with minimal background information or context. Also I said both of them were wrong.

I just wanted to say let the people and the fans see the movie and let us be the judge Because it shows P being human and no matter what I will think about the movie I’ll still be a true fan of P and will continue to buy his music no matter what what ❤❤❤
Jill knew she stirred some shit up, which is why those comments have been limited. I respect you for playing it safe, but the question should definitely be asked. Why didn’t Jill say anything to us before? Instead of just trying to sell us the side chick story. Why did she sit here and wait until the most subscribed video on demand streaming platform offered her money, to say this? The reactions would’ve been different had she said it to the fandom first and foremost. And those Facebook messages doesn’t help her case either. End the documentary, because this is an introduction to Prince for the current and future generations.
And if that’s the only time, it was reactionary and not him being an abuser.

Maybe he also knew she was sleeping with his friend Albert Magnoli to say to her ‘this isn’t a f###ing movie”. By the way the story of her sleeping with Magnoli is fact …. I saw her say it in an interview myself.
@@zakiasimpson8928 Punching when someone slaps you is overreaction. Let's be honest. But I personally hate when women slap men because they know any reaction will make the man the abuser (if they didn't physically assault you, a slap is still wrong). So they both were wrong. In this case, he was more so but she doesn't look too great either (regardless of why she did it). And slapping someone who came from a supposedly abusive childhood is probably a bad idea.
They supposedly weren't paid for this doc. But valid question. She seemed hesitant to say much to random fans online but completely trauma dumps on a highly publicized documentary? I hate to be cynical but I kind of think she was using fans and hoping her first album with P would stream and get a renewal of interest. When that didn't happen and her second album was finally released, she was done playing nice. It makes everything good she ever said about him and every indication of closure and forgiveness that she implied before seem questionable and disingenuous. I am not saying she is lying about anything she said about P good or bad. But the bait and switch seem opportunistic in nature.

He should’ve just thrown her out the room honestly. In today’s time, police would have made them both accountable for their actions. Main point is no slap, this conversation would not be happening. I’d be shocked if it’s released in its nine hour entirety. The estate and a great number of fans only want the best sides of him presented. I get it but I don’t. He was a man. Extremely talented but a man. We all have good and bad in us. I don’t want him painting as a a-hole no more than anyone else. But, it is what it is. If he hurt people that’s part of his life as well the great music and wonderful experiences he gave to the world
I totally agree about the ultimate ‘hold my beer’ moment. Why not the full story behind that? Why not the full story behind the Super Bowl? By Don Mischer himself. How it nearly never happened! The guy holding the cables together in the pouring rain! Prince saying ‘can you make it rain harder’. So many stories out there.
I really would like to know why do you old school Prince fans not want this documentary to come out?! Prince was human I being a die hard Prince fan born the year after purple rain released always wanted to understand who prince was behind the music there’s always been this air around him like he’s just this mysterious all perfect being I think that’s why Michael has lived on with his fans so well we got to learn why Michael made his art and who he was outside of that we didn’t get the same for prince I always wanted to know why he started all of these bands that were like his competition? What inspired him to do that? How did he learn to play so many instruments? Why did he portray himself as being mixed but later in his life made it clear he was black . I think it would actually bring a spike to people discovering his music and going through his catalogue I wish it releases
Thanks for a great discussion, sorry I missed the live show. I have reservations about this documentary especially due to the current cancel culture and that Prince be treated with care and respect. Prince is one of the greats and brought joy to millions of people, most fans knew he had flaws and nobody's life can survive that kind of scrutiny. His net good in the world completely overshadows any bad behavior. There's not one rock star who didn't revel in bad behavior. It makes me nauseous that they would show him in the morgue, that's not right and something you can never unsee. Prince sacrificed his life to music, there's something beautiful and inspiring about this story even though it led to an unbalanced life. I recently read Elon Musk's biography, it struck me that these two men had a lot of overlap in personality and early life. In one interview Musk said that his head was exploding with ideas and he couldn't turn it off, and then quipped "you wouldn't want to be me". Elon's father was abusive and violent. He didn't fit in at school and was regularly beaten up, at one point so badly that he was hospitalized and almost died.
They are not showing him in the morgue. There are only pics from the investigation of Paisly Park, showing the pills and the Elevator. You can easily find these all over youtube.

It's Prince! There is going to be CONTROVERSY! He lived a full life as a human being on Planet earth graces, curses , gifts and faults, faith and flaws . and the stories will be told from various perspectives.Ill always be a fan who is never naive considering the subject of Prince so I want to see the documentary
Edelman would have shown more respect for George Floyd than he apparently showed Prince. If you're going to do a documentary, you should always respect your subject. That doesn't require being a "fan," but it requires decency.
Prince wasn’t misogynistic, he supported lots of women in his lifetime and his music was pretty progressive other than a couple songs. Just having disagreements or tricky situations with women doesn’t make you a misogynist. He viewed women as being equal to men. I’m a Gen Z woman + a feminist.

That's why we don't need anymore documentaries on Prince. What people want is the DAMN MUSIC. There's fans and channels out there that out out more and better music than the damn estate.
Really happy it’s being blocked, sounds like Ezra was on a witch hunt, a better documentary hopefully will be done one day. He was human but centering him around a few people from the 80s and making bad moments into a broad stripe is sad. Most people will react if you slap them and she was sharing him already and knew he was into others more. Also sounds like it happened once because of her hitting him. PR was just a movie, they didn’t get mistreated on set and seem happy to be it. And happy to be working . And when PR was released it was a hit, nobody was making into something negative, more of a story of evolution. And being a playboy with women willing to play is not abusive, some women get infatuated with stars and want to be in their world. Also the original script by Prince was mainly including Vanity and Morris, the new director built it out including the others. Lastly people have a right to critique others. It’s not fair to try to paint Prince as all bad and others as victim. People have watched interviews and read books and people that were alive during those times have a right to critique those people like Jill and Wendy. And maybe feel like more context could be added. They are just human too with their own issues and not to be placed on a pedestal. All those people were in their 20s at the time and wanted more from Prince that they didn’t get. Jill getting a death threat from someone does not mean other people don’t have a right to see some troubling ways about her shown in many interviews over the years.

After seeing Pablo Torre's video...I want to see the whole thing. I Love Prince, but it seem like Prince's insecurities are the problem. Kevin Smith discussed the problems he had with making a doc for him. I'm good with seeing all the warts. He still is a genius. Questlove said he seen it and cried afterwards
@ Did you watch Kevin thoughts on Prince once he passed. You should watch it, he has a lot of regret and ownership of his own behavior. Kevin seem more mature. It’s on RUclips. Yeah Quest love seem to a new respect for his plight as a black man in the music industry. I didn’t read much about insecurities just 2 or 3 bitter people from his 20s maybe unhappy with their lack of career or that he wasn’t that into them
I believe Prince did hit Jill, and I also believe he asked Wendy to denounce her homosexuality. That said, I’m a huge fan of Prince and his music, but I’d never be so naive as to think he wasn’t human. Prince went through so much trauma as a child that he turned inward, using music as an escape from his pain. It’s true-hurt people hurt people.
I didn’t have a personal relationship with him, but I was lucky enough to meet him a couple of times. Imagine being a young man in his late teens or early twenties, evolving into a mega star and living your life in the public eye. My personal belief is that Prince hid from the public because he had insecurities he didn’t want anyone to see. Those closest to him knew about these insecurities and worked hard to protect him for years.
I don’t think Prince could ever be "canceled." The estate, in my opinion, is being overly cautious, and I don’t think it’s necessary. I do believe the documentary will eventually be edited and released. Netflix already paid for the rights, so within the confines of their contract, it’s just a matter of time. Once the watered-down version comes out, I’m sure the director’s cut will make its way to the public.

Sounds like Wendy wanted the Revolution reunion and Prince told her something she wouldn’t do to help her move on from it. Prince didn’t seem to have no need or desire for a reunion with the Revolution
Think these discussions are a bore honestly, they tried with the article and nothing happened. We know the little dirt and no biggy. Look forward to a real doc that focuses on his genius, influence and what made him, not stories without full context. People from my 20s don’t know me best and work relationships have boundaries. Wish they would include people that did know him best, especially the last 20 years of his life. Having sex with a lot of women in your 20s doesn’t mean they know you best or as ex band member around 3 or 4 years, Prince lived a full life and was always evolving . They stupidity put out all the soap opera stuff already and showed their hand and the real focus. What insecurities did he hide? Think he just wanted people to enjoy the music and have his own life and privacy. We have no right to his private life. We all have insecurities and like privacy m, hard for a celebrity.
They would need the right to music to put out and they don’t have that.

Give me the full documentary manuscript to read if they don’t want to show the full nine hour documentary. If they edit the documentary it won’t be the same. I feel we are smart enough to make our own judgement. Nothing will change my mind about Prince. He will always be a legend, genius and amazing musician to me.
I wholeheartedly disagree with you, I need to have all sides, good, bad and ugly. Telling the whole story is the only way to free him! Most humans try to build and control their living narrative but when they're gone, the walls can come down. It's not going to be good if the conflicts are only surface level, especially from a extremely private person like Prince.

You're judging Prince too by acknowledging he became very religious at one point then saying sarcastically, "Thank you, Larry Graham." That was Prince's choice. Not Larry's. Prince said himself that he wanted Wendy to denounce her sexual preferences because he "loved her and wanted to see her in heaven". If we don't include a person's motives, we are not telling their whole story.
True. I am sort of judging yes. But Prince was ALWAYS religious, consistently referencing the Bible in his music, even if he didn't live a life that aligned with his beliefs. The Larry Graham comment was more tongue in cheek, because it wasn't until he went into the scriptures deep with Larry (hence the Rainbow Children album), did he really start pressing people in his inner circle to start conforming and aligning with biblical principles. Down to the implementation of swear jars at Paisley Park. That transition into a more devout and religiously focused path didn't happen until Larry. NO ONE had more of that level of impact on Prince religiously.

Netflix is only interested in making money from Prince's demise instead of supporting a genius's legacy.. All the documentaries on Prince start out relatively the same and end the same. The man was a musical genius. They need to focus on that and that alone.

A documentary should be truthful. The reality is Londel is fool. He is not going to be there mooching from the estate forever and IT WILL BE RELEASED UNTACT.

I absolutely agree with you Chris, that we dont need to hear about that so called negative side of Prince. As a long term fan of over 40 years, and nearing 60, I dont care to know about anymore of his personal life. I just dont care, he's gone! Its just about the music now 💜 There is no point........ Why, oh why does it have to go down a personal path? Its distasteful. We all have flaws, I have flaws, you have flaws, Prince had flaws, we're all human, and in his case, yes, life is intensified and scrutinised.
The world's fascination with knowing everything and anything about celebrity has just gone too far. Its absolutely ridiculous. Really, are people that stupid to care that much about the private life of a complete stranger? I dont, Im too busy worrying about my own life lol!
I'd just love to see a documentary about his music career, full of amazing unseen clips of all those goodies that's in the vault and thats it.
Yep, Id watch an edited version of the doco ( music career focussed) and pray that after all this shamozzle that we get more wonderful gems released from the vault, in the way of box sets, aftershows, super deluxes, concerts etc 💜💜💜

I’m not going to be an apologist for anyone who uses physical violence on another person. The problem I have is that anyone that was used to validate whatever Jill said happened between her and Prince, bears some of the responsibility for remaining mum until after his death. All we have, in my opinion, is an allegation. If true, there are people, still living, that should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this alleged behavior by Prince to go unreported.
Prince wasn’t perfect. Everyone knows that, so an honest documentary (warts and all) doesn’t bother me in the least. The silence however, until recently, for the rest of the stuff is absolutely deafening. My 2 cents…

@@skygazer6898 Sinead struggled with some mental issues out of her control and both her kids were taken at different times. The last 6 yrs of her life was in institutions and on and off throughout. How she would know about his relationships with his gfs is interesting, they weren’t friends, she just song one of his songs. So Jill slapped him and Sinead made allegations, if that’s it, that’s not much and shows he had no pattern and both of them have their own issues. More context is needed

There are many that speak well of him especially those who knew him beyond his 20s and he has no history of criminal behavior. 2 or 3 people from his 20s that are bitter with their own issues don’t define him.
There is NO comparison to claims against MJ and the claims against Prince. NONE!
The point that was brought up was how they were able to release such a hit piece without any recourse. NOT to compare the musicians or allegations. You’re right, there is NO comparison in relation to the allegations or level of severity. None at all.

Ezra is a respectable documentarian… this is not a hit piece.. if you’ve read mayte’s book or have been around.. u already know these things..
The best part of the documentary is that it is not just a quick half-ass documentary but a long and thorough one by an Academy Award-winning director.The change from Ava to Ezra was a huge win for everyone,. It should be released intact. Lastly, the estate should be run by competent people instead of the moochers like Londel who have been running it to the ground.
Ava is not award winning? How is the estate going into the ground? Looking out for Prince is a bad thing?

Who cares. We don't get a cut of Prince's royalties; and the Estate vultures have prospered enough already on Somebody Else's work.
Cancel Culture will End (and anyway who cares about those folks - a self-righteous minority representing not the Left, this commenter included, but simply the Unrealistic/Unforgiving & Hypocritical Dumb).
And besides, Prince's Work is probably Uncancellable. (His work was so good, he always had fans who liked him In Spite Of aspects of his image, lyrics, personality, etc., that they might have deemed distasteful.)
There is precedent that backs up this assumption. John Lennon, admittedly, hit his wife Cynthia when he was young; Paul McCartney, as well, even Sings about formerly "beating" his woman; Ringo has made similar admissions. It's terrible - Unforgivable as an act; yet we seem to have forgiven the Beatles themselves, due in no small part to the fact that we love their music - and because Forgiveness, provided a person has mended his ways, is something almost everyone deserves and that everyone, at some point, has needed. At least that's what the Good Book preaches.
It is no defense for hitting a woman, but it should be noted that in Jones's account, it was she who instigated the violence. To be remembered, too, is the fact she's actually Bigger, physically, than Prince; but as a male who, while somewhat petite, was in rather athletic shape, he'd have the edge in an altercation - which, to reiterate, shouldn't have Happened (restraint, on moral grounds, should have been exercised by Prince - presuming Jones, whom we have no reason to doubt, is telling the truth).
"Protecting" someone's legacy by Hiding the True person - apart from raising ethical questions - is no protection at all. Prince's songs at some point - if the the human species avoids extinction - will become Public Domain. The Estate will cease to be and All will be revealed. And like Mr. Christopher says here, everyone's heard it all anyway - and everyone, including Jones, still digs Prince (or, at any rate, his Excellent, still widely-enjoyed Music).
