Every time I feel I need to be grounded. I reach for these old stories they're classics. They had to work at it. No b******* special effects. Just pure literature

Jeeves? It’s old, that doesn’t make it literature

Wodehouse was a literary genius. Pure gold - and relatively modern actually.

@@jonbward wodehouse is perfectly fine entertainment. Old entertainment (5 minutes ago historically) is not the same thing as a classic. Or do you think Jeeves ranks with David Copperfield, Henry The Vth, etc?

Wodehouse absolutely IS considered a writer of classic literature because of the standard of the execution. Needless to say, Dickens was writing drawn-out, commercially exploitative, popular stories to a degree that does make him comparable to Wodehouse (though I suggest Wodehouse's work is consistently leaner and more efficient than Dickens) but, yes, he also directly confronted social issues with passion and incisiveness where Wodehouse did not. And a toothbrush is not a chair, but both are perfect for their intended jobs. Jane Austen, let's not forget, addresses certain social issues but is actually incredibly narrow in her concerns in a way that arguably places her closer to Wodehouse than to Dickens. It would also be a mistake to think that Wodehouse does nothing beyond making people laugh, since, obviously, his most famous work is founded on the literally ancient narrative idea of the wise servant and the foolish master. In that sense his work is explicitly subversive in a way that is not unlike Kenneth Grahame (also literature, whether its for kids or not) or Huxley or Jerome. Comedy is just as much literature as Tragedy, if it is done well - and few did it as well as Wodehouse.
