    I will never forget finding my cast iron plant. It was a bedraggled thing busting out of its 6" nursery pot (three leaf shoots were coming out of a split in the bottom) and it was covered in spiderwebs and bugs. I paid $9 for it. I was so new to plants I wasn't sure I could save him, but I named him "Private Ryan" hoping I could. I treated him with neem oil, repotted him, gave him good light, and waited. Three weeks later he put out 13 (!!!!) new shoots all at once, and as those have grown in the last couple months his leaves have essentially doubled in density. He's completely healthy and thriving and it's honestly one of the best feelings in the world. Those plants are SURVIVORS!

    • @hllindsay5208
      @hllindsay5208 5 лет назад

      That may be difficult. Full sun is about 100,000 lux and typical indoor lighting is about one hundredth of that. This is a lovely selection of plants. Since your last video I'm really coming around to Fatsia japonica, you are so persuasive. 😂 I always thought "that plant looks like something I'd walk outside and yank out of the ground" and then you talked about that being the reason you like it and it changed my perspective a little. A big underrated plant is Nepenthes, the carnivorous vine. The Ventrata species is very hardy for indoors, and despite needing distilled/rain water only, they're a fabulously rewarding plant. the leaves are big and lush, they vine elegantly, and the colourful and interesting pitchers are pleasing to the eye and always a conversation starter. I think they're underrated because they are only popular with carnivore growers, and not with mainstream plant growers.

    I love the Schefflera - used to have a couple back in the 90s. Their leaves feel like a luscious piece of soft leather. I love washing them. Pothos are incredible, albeit ubiquitous. I have a really old marble queen and it’s never been repotted and in fact a bird built a nest in it when I left it outside one summer. 😆 There is little to no soil left in the pot but every time I dust once a week I take it off the shelf it’s on and fill it up with water let it soak up the sun light in the kitchen and it just shines. It is gorgeous and stunning and I’ve taken clippings from it so many times. Did I mention it’s just gorgeous?!
    I have a 20-year-old golden pothos, (by the way you pronounce it correctly ha ha), and I have a neon pothos that’s living in water at the top of my stairs in a west facing window and it’s so lovely to see that bright chartreuse against my dark Queen Anne table.
    Then there’s my Grape Leaf Ivy: to die for! It had been sitting in my north facing Minnesota window for years and I don’t even know how many years at this point and during this “polar vortex“ I finally pulled it away and realized it had burn marks all over some of the leaves touching the window so I put it on an interior wall and once again, it’s doing great. In fact, it was even still growing and putting out new growth when it was being frozen to death 😖 so yeah, I totally agree with you about those three plants -I’ve never had the other two.
    Great video, two green thumbs up! 🌱🌱☺️

    Got my cast iron plant at Lowes last week for $9.98 in an 8in pot! It is mixed in with the grasses. My pothos are water propogated and free. They are growing up a tree where I live, the top of the vine has leaves bigger than my head! Pulled several vines to propogate, that was the beginning of my return from a black thumb! • @hllindsay5208
    @hllindsay5208 5 лет назад

    For the majority of my life, I have had spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum). These plants are incredibly easy to care for and simple to propagate. Of the many varieties in cultivation, the typical green form is probably my favorite. While it is not as popular as the variegated forms, it is certainly more vigorous, becoming a full size plant (from cutting) over the duration of one summer, from my experience.
    I have also seen one come back from sub-zero temperatures. One of our variegated plants got left outside over winter one year. It was next to the house, so it probably did not get temperature swings far below the negative teens (Fahrenheit), even though temperatures do occasionally drop into the negative forties or colder where I live. The plant survived and came back from its roots in spring.

However, she bought one too and hers died, while mine is still doing alright. Your list is so similar to mine lol my personal top 5 underrated plants would be 1) Money Trees 2) Schefflera of all types 3) Asparagus Fern 4) Cissus, especially Oak Leaf/Grape Leaf Ivy 5) Aralias and False Aralias and Aralia relatives like Fatsia. At my workplace, the plants most likely to stick around forever tend to be big Scheffleras, Dracaenas, and Palms. The palms, I understand but the rest, why? We also got in some very nice baby Fatsia recently and no one has been biting despite my attempts to push them as often as possible. Our Money Trees, Norfolk Island Pines, and Schefflera of all types just sit there. Meanwhile, we can't keep Crotons or Fiddleleafs in stock which.... sure, they're fine plants and all but not what I would call best for all plant caretakers and situations.

    Beautiful plants!!
    Fatsia is an outdoor plant for us, I love how easy that is and I recently got a variegated one (which is a bit sad, unfortunately).
    Schefflera actinophylla (it means ray/beam leaf) is on my "next paycheck to buy list".
    Ivy/Cissus sp. is a weed where I live and it's considered a rather "dirty" plant, since rodents and other crawlers like to hide in its foliage, so I'm staying away from it. It's also a huge plant, it can cover entire buildings, so I'm not sure how great of a houseplant it can be.
    Aspidistra (from the word aspis=shield) has also been a popular plant a few decades ago, but hard to find and expensive here as well. I'm on the hunt for a bargain on this one.
    Pothos (=lust/yearning) was one of my very first indoor plants and I want them ALL!! Especially those neon and cebu blue... sigh... I have 7 different plants and I'd buy more for sure!!
    Natal mahogany is stunning, but after googling it, I'm not sure it'll be an easy or an ideal indoor plant. It also has one of the weirdest names: trichilia is related to the word "hair" and emetica... well it means vomitory/vomitive!! Lol!!
    I should definitely make that plant etymology video!! Hihi!!
    Sorry for the huge comment and may you have a great day!!!!

    Thank you so much for this great video Love all the plants you included I want them all! My problem is NO ROOM & NO LIGHT I must stick to small plants - little light or grow lights, like Calathea, Peperomia, my all-time favorite Pothos small Philodendron & small succulents - Haworthia - Kalanchoe. I just passed the 50 mark my dogs and I will be moving to the garage my Jade Pothos just slammed the front door. A fun new plant for me, is the 'Scilla Violecea' or Tiger Lily a succulent with bulbs that do not need a lot of light, grows faster than most succulents so you can share the bulbs with friends. Keep your love of plants coming I look forward to your next show, I feel like we are good friends .

    After this video I picked up 2 31/2 ft amates. I spent all day hosing it down, wiping it’s leaves to shine, and treating it with neem. They’re both shining beautifully! Easily become my fav plant. I’m poor now..Going to go cry under my Amate now..😭🌱

    I'm trying to grow my houseplant collection and this list is helpful. I have never had great luck with houseplants except for pothos so I have to add those for plant confidence. Most of my plants are outdoors and are succulents or cacti. Thanks for sharing😊👍❤.

    You've probably figured it out by now, but the cutting in the jar is Tetrastigma Voinierianum.

    That could explain what happened to my Umbrella Plant. My flat's kinda on the dark side. Weird thing happened though. I had heard they were susceptible to pests and when it got down to it's last two leaf clusters I cut them off where the stem met the trunk. So each had about a three inch stem with a cluster of six small leaves. I then popped them in some potting mix as cuttings. The individual leaves fell off one of them but the other survived. That was about three months ago. Here's where it gets weird. Just this afternoon I popped it out of the small 2 inch diameter pot it was in and the entire contents of the pot was one compact rootball. But above ground it hasn't changed at all. It's still just a small stem with six small leaves. I was thinking by now it would have put up new growth.

You 3 are 3 of my favs, along with Erika Schmoop! The plants you showed are all really nice. I will have to watch for them! TFS!

    The only time I ever got spider mites on plants was both times I tried to own/grow english ivy. Both ivys were quickly dumped in the garbage since they were so heavily infested and my other nearby plants needed some major cleaning/spraying to save.

    All the various Aralias...the Ming Aralia is one of my favorites. This was a great topic cause I have been into plants for a long time and have seen popular plants come and go. I am old enough to remember the dusty, yellowed, neglected Monstera that was in every doctor and dentist office as a kid. I haven't been able to invest in one to day due to this association...way too traumatic.

    Great video Nick! I loved hearing your thoughts especially on those plants I might just glance over at the store. I was ignoring the African violet until I was given some and now I’m so intrigued with their fuzzy leaves! I love Betsie Begonia too. She is quirky and super fun to watch! P.S. the two plants I bought from your Etsy shop are doing great! String of hearts and the wax ivy. Id like to propagate the wax ivy as I only have one branch coming from the soil. It grew this winter really well! A winter grower apparently. Can you suggest the best season for cutting and rooting it? Thanks! 😗

    I always say. Not all plants should be statement plants. I think a diversity of bright coloured/ variegated/ textured plants needs complimentary less "in your face" plants. All plants are beautiful and deserves a spot in our homes😊
