Just finished my custom Westinghouse 7500/9500 generator shed, check it out.

- I built a generator shed for my Westinghouse 7500w generator with electric start and ran a line directly from the unit to my transfer switch on my house. With the flick of a couple buttons and switches, I can be lit back up in 15 seconds if the power goes out. Enjoy the video!

Thanks for sharing! I have a Westinghouse WPro8500 that I plan to install, similar to what you did. Just a couple more ideas for you: 1. Make sure you keep your exhaust pipe pitched downward, so it won't collect rain/moisture. 2. After about 10 hours of engine run time, switch the motor oil over to full synthetic. It will help with cold-weather engine start cranking.
Put a tee fitting on the end of the pipe and attach a piece of pipe downward with a cap on the end that should support it.
Excellent. Gave me some great ideas for my Westinghouse. Thanks for posting!
Nicely done!!!
You may run into issues having your exhaust line right next to your air intake. Also your intake area should at least be twice your outlet size.
I do plan on angling the exhaust pipe up enough to clear the intake. Also, the second intake grille needs to be installed, it is sitting on top of the generator. Thank you for the advice as well I appreciate it!
@@JasonLaMonica you could run it up and add a muffler.
Nice build!
You have a stepper motor open and close the choke. The next cold start you do, manually hold the choke closed and see if that makes it start easier.
Also, if you leave the ignition rocker switch turned on so the remote or push button start switch will work that could drain down the battery in time and keep the electronics powered up. Even though it is a small drain.
Line with rockwool or insulation for more sound deadening. Venting should be changed as mentioned from other users. Also hang an incandescent 60w bulb inside and keep on when super cold out. Will keep the it a little warmer for starts.
Looks good for a budget setup.I suspect that your fan is undersized. You want to see about a 10 deg F rise in temp. and you are golden. I had to (5kw. Honda) install a 16" AC infinity fan rated at 3,000 cfm to achieve this. Also my intake vent was about 17 x 17. Remember that heat is a generator's worst enemy and failure is progressive not sudden.
I assume that in winter it is easier to keep it cool but in summer you can open the roof a little to vent the hot air
Your exhaust is right next to the inlet..... have it go vertical with some kind of "hat" to prevent rain/snow into the pipe. Easy fix...
Solar trickle charger would reduce the need for external power to maintain the battery.
This product is nice quiet not like last one I got
Great idea 2 bluetti AC500 and B300S (6 battery
Power whole house (no gas need )
Thanks Jason, fantastic video. I just installed a Wgen12000df inside a shed and i am curious on any idea you might have on how to keep the temperatura inside the shed above freezing during our Canadian winters.
I don't. LOL. Only thing I have done is put a small space heater in the gen shed and covered the whole thing with an insulator to get it warm enough. We had a real real bad stretch of cold and it wouldn't start unless the shed was about 15 degrees warmer. I'm glad I did that test before we needed the genny or else we would have been stuck without. Good luck!
Nice set up...code says 5' from window or door....3' from structure..
Do you leave the gas valve open 24/7?
Can you kindly provide a link for that shed?
Just curious if the cable you used is rated for being underground or not.
Hey Jason, I have the same generator and I am looking to imitate your creative build using the Keter shed. I don’t mean to bother you, but what did you wire the exhaust fan to?
I wired it to one of the 110v outlets, so when the generator starts and begins producing power it will kick on and then shut off when the gen is turned off.
Just tune the engine man, it will start on 1st try!
I have just received the same generator, how did you extend the exhaust?
I took the exhaust cap off and mated the black pipe to it and ran it out the side. I used a pellet stove pipe shroud as a heat shield so as not to melt the plastic from the heat. It's kind of a hack job but has stood the test of time so far.
Thanks for your video.
How is your generator shed holding up? I just bought a Westinghouse 9500df and have a Keter storage shed en route.
The exhaust has me a little confounded. I saw your description in a comment earlier. I guess I need to take the cover off from around the exhaust so I can more clearly see what I'm working with.
I plan to put my exhaust fan on the opposite side that you did and my intake vent on the other side. I do think it's good to put the intake vent down low and exhaust fan up high to pull air in and up and out.
We put the exhaust fan on the left for aesthetics, mainly. I can take some pix and reply with links to show what I did with the actual exhaust pipe. I still have not finished everything, it's not a high priority and we don't lose power much so no real worries.
The shed is holding up good. Check out the newer vid I put up from a month or so ago as well.
@@JasonLaMonica I read your reply to another poster's question about the exhaust. It sounds like you found an iron pipe that slipped over the muffler outlet and secured it with screws. Is that pretty much right?
@@coffeygrounds5461 yes that is essentially it!
Well done...can you share how you connected the exhaust to he gen?
There was a small metal cap with screen on the exhaust pipe and I took that off and the iron pipe slides over the exhaust pipe snugly. I made two small holes in the exhaust pipe on opposite sides and did the same for iron pipe and used small screws to screw them together at those two points. It's not *perfect* but it works. The pellet stove pipe around the iron pipe is strictly to give old iron a bit of breathing room and not melt my shed in case anyone was wondering.
@@JasonLaMonica what size pipe?
Jason, how deep is that particular shed? any chance you could share the depth...once you start getting into the larger portable home gennys its harder to find a reasonably priced shed...they all seem to be in the 30" range
This one is actually about 2 feet deep, I had to take the wheels off for it to fit.
@@JasonLaMonica thanks, much appreciated
Nice vid, looking to do something similar, what shed is that?
Remote... more info on that? Link?
It comes with the generator actually 👍
Don’t need an intake fan if you got an exhaust fan for such a simple need.
What brand shed is that and where did you get it?
Keter is the brand
We got it at Wayfair for about $175 total also.
@@JasonLaMonica Nice! I have the same generator.
WARNING:
Your air 'inlet' is "Too Low".
Your air 'inlet' could be covered by "Heavy Snow"..
Change to ngk spark plug BP7ES
I had a issue with the factory plug, always took forever to start. changing to ngk plug made a huge difference.
Grab your spl meter and see how she does lol
I will get a baseline SPL test before I mat it, and then one after. I may have to chg the frequency cutoff from 80hz to 200hz though.
To be called A CUSTOM SHED, ONE must build it from Scratches......In Woods material 👍🤣
If you say so boss 😄
Master Electrician here. You have plumbing pipe coming out of your generator cabinet. You have the wrong type of cable running through what appears to be plumbing pipe. Also you cannot terminate from that open plumbing pipe into a plug. If you have a fire your insurance company my not cover your loss because of code violations. I would call a licensed electrical contractor to bring your installation up to code.
That things gonna melt after four hours.
Eventually it will be updated 😪😄🍻
Had a power outage recently and it was a chance to see how prepared we really were...

You need to remove your exhaust away from your vent
