No movie changed Hollywood more than THE GODFATHER. From the bestselling novel by Mario Puzo to box-office blockbuster, its influential legacy endures to this day. Starring Marlon Brando in his Oscar®-winning performance as the patriarch of the Corleone family, this first installment in the three-movie saga paints a dramatic portrait of the Sicilian clan’s rise and near fall from power in America. Balanced between the Corleone’s commitment to family and the ugly crime business in which they are engaged, it features career-making performances by Al Pacino, James Caan, Talia Shire, Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall. This searing and brilliant masterpiece garnered ten Academy Award® nominations, and won three, including Best Picture.
Featuring: Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, John Cazale, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Sterling Hayden, Richard Conte, Talia Shire, Al Lettieri

And I refused -- to be a fool -- dancing on the string, held by all those -- bigshots. I don't apologize -- that's my life -- but I thought that -- that when it was your time -- that -- that you would be the one to hold the strings. Senator - Corleone. This scene sums up The Godfather very well, we see the most important characters, Vito and Michael, father and son, both talking about rasing family and the menaces that were about to come, Vito says what he though about his sons and his life and that how he dosen't regret it because he never wanted to dance on the strings on powerful people (maybe a reference on The Godfather's logo, the puppeteer's hand) in the end he wanted Michael to have a responsible life being a kind of dipolmatic and mostly to be respected but Michael gave his soul and respect to his father so much that he maybe wanted to be like him, but in the end he couldn't because he knew how to maintain power and wealth, but not the most important thing, which was the family.

This is acting of the highest quality...should be studied in drama schools...when Vito just after "the funny papers" he, very briefly, goes into himself...mbe back to himself reading the funny papers or his kids reading them...a sublime moment in a sublime scene in a sublimely acted film...it also give the lie to Brando's oft repeated disdain for acting...someone who is supposed to be disdainful about acting doesn't bother to go that far...that brief moment isn't in the script!...but it shows an actor totally 'in the moment'...and both actors are at the top of their game.....just brilliant and a joy to watch.

Michael has one of the best character arcs ever in my opinion. He seems like among the very last people in the Corleone family to succeed Vito, but of course due to some of the best character development in cinema history, his transformation is absolutely believable! Michael would end up being far colder than his father, and that’s why Michael was more feared, but less respected.

I have no doubt in my mind that Vito's unexpected passing was a major blow to Michael's plans regarding his father's counseling.
In my opinion, I think that is one reason why he only continued to do business with those with whom his father had had a good relationship and made Clemenza his unofficial underboss and consiglere.
While he learned a lot from his father over his lifetime, Cosa Nostra was still a new world to him, and he needed someone who he could trust but also had extensive experience. Clemenza was the best option.

Women and Children can be careless, but not men.
    Never a more true statement.
Think about that, when you think whether or not a man has feelings.

The Don talks about how he never wanted this for Michael. The novel is quite different. He very much wanted Michael to be part of it, and was unimpressed with his choice to join up and go to college

Marlon Brando kept looking to his left cause he didn't know his lines, which someone held flash cards.

It works beautifully in this scene cause it gives Vito the look of someone with regret and remorse, like he's ashamed of himself to look at his son.

That is so true he never wanted this life for Michael.. just imagine if Michael didn't go into this kind of life his daughter would have never got killed in the third film..

@@healthycigarettes5088 all of that is very true but the most important detail is he would have never had to witness his daughter being shot in such a brutal way after all deaths the reason why he went back to Italy and died alone because his Mafia life destroyed everything that he loved and cared about. That's probably also a reason why his father never wanted him to get into the family business because he knew from personal experience That's How It Ends that's how it always happens. It's the same example for Sons of Anarchy in terms of John teller and Jax Teller their life ended the same way.
"On the fringe, blood and bullets are the rule of law and if you're a man with convictions violence is inevitable.”
You could relate this quote even with the movie The Godfather the quote from Sons of Anarchy
