      This is where Michael's survival instinct/danger sense kicked in.
      Most of us would have waited and waited till someone showed up at the desk.
      He probably already had great natural senses but his combat experience further heightened these.
      It was too quiet.

    • @doodooswaggy3825
      @doodooswaggy3825 Год назад +15

      It's also shot specifically to heighten the tension. We see a seemingly empty hospital, and then while Michael runs, we only see him and not what's ahead. Then we see the empty hallway that should relieve the tension, but the preceding shots only make it more eerie.

    This is the scene where Michael shows why he, not Sonny, not Freddy, should take over the reins from the old man. In a stroke of luck, he arrives at the hospital in that narrow window between when the guards are hauled away and the killers arrive. He sizes up the situation and then does everything right.
    First, he calls for help. Next, he moves the old man so that the killers will have a harder time finding him. Next, he arranges a false show to make it appear to the killers that everything is normal, using the timely arrival of Enzo, the son of the baker whom we saw in the opening scene of the movie. By the way, Enzo just assured himself that he will be well taken care of from now on.

      Jerome Taperman I'm going to piggy back on this. The line he delivers to the nurse in incredible. "You know my father" is a statement not a question. He follows that with, "Men are coming here to kill him." Another definitive. He makes sure she understands the severity and urgency with, "(Do) you understand?" He follows with the plea of a son trying to save his fathers life, "Now help me please." I really love that piece of dialog.. It's possibly my favorite line in the whole movie.

    The record player skipping and the actual set inside the hospital from the 40s was SO evocative. Just a tiny bit of the amazing authenticity of the original GF scenes. I worked in a 40s era hospital in 1988 and it's amazing how this set eerily recalls the look of what 'state of the art' healthcare looked like back then. All the STAIRS would never make it today. That baker, Enzo, had guts to hang around with Michael. Enzo knew about loyalty and how to make buttercream rosettes on Connie's cake! I miss those old, neighborhood Italian bakeries but retail neighborhood is a brutal racket. The reason they thrived back in the old days was that they were true, family businesses. But you'd better like getting up a t2:30 am to start the bread and sfogliatelle!

    The hospital that was taken place to be filmed for this scene still exist. It's the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary located in Manhattan on 218 Second Ave Between 13th and 14th street. It's over 120 years old and plans were underway to demolish the establishment until it was halted in the meanwhile as it's in dispute to preserve it.

  • @ManicRevolver
    @ManicRevolver 6 месяцев назад

    What I liked in this scene is that Michael also helped keeping Enzo safe while they both protect the Don: making sure that Enzo looks and keeps the look of an experienced button man, assuring him that he'll be okay and not to panic. Then after the hitmen drove past the hospital, Michael immediately led Enzo away from the gate to escape while he faced the ire of the policemen.
    In this scene, the Enzo has become a "made man" himself side by side with the future Don, without the bloody encounter.

      A couple of convergent reasons, one aesthetic, one technological. There was a new artistic stress on naturalism, which meant away from the "staginess" of Hollywood productions: brightly lit sets, saturated technocolor. Then there was the arrival of new color films that needed less light to properly expose. That meant you could shoot more indoor scenes, night scenes, scenes with indirect light, etc. The flipside is the images were less color saturated and more grainy.
      Altman's films are my favorite example of that aesthetic. In the Godfather it's great how the sunshiny Sicily scenes play off against the indoorsy / night world of the NY mob.

    Had the entire Corleone Family been as smart as Michael they would have swallowed their enemies whole!! If ever a man was a natural at leading a family it was Michael Corleone. By fluke luck he arrives at the Hospital with minutes to spare. No detectives. No police protection. Just him and his wits. And Elephant sized balls!! Not an ounce of hesitation or trepidation. More guts than a Kamikaze charging a machine gun nest. Enzo is left shaking and trembling while Michael's pulse rate doesn't raise a beat. Captain "Moron" McCluskey had no clue of the Devils Brew he was about to drink. Neither did Virgil Solozzo, Moe Greene, Emilio Barzini or Philip Tattaglia. The Five Families were like Five Little Five year olds in his hands. Even more amazing is that even his own family so badly underestimated his incredible talents. A delicate faced pretty boy with the stealth of an invisible Cobra. In their haste to eliminate the mighty Vito Corleone, the Five Families unleashed an enemy more deadly than they could possibly imagine. Or possibly contend with.

Michael did take the family legitimate, but by means that his father did not want for him: and he stated as much before his death, when he envisioned Michael as a Senator.
