Catalina Story Project: "Roy Rose: A Life in Avalon"

Capturing the stories of Catalina Island history as experienced by those who lived it and sharing it with others is an important aspect of the Catalina Island Museum’s mission. For that reason, the museum has identified a number of individuals to showcase. Doug Bombard was the first in this series and now the museum is celebrating longtime island resident Roy Rose with the new documentary, "Roy Rose: A Life in Avalon," created by Story Bank Productions.
The film covers the Rose family history and most importantly the vivid details of his first trip to the island during World War II, moving here full-time, taking over his father’s business and enjoying decades of life on the island collecting art. You will get a glimpse into Avalon’s tent city, dancing in the Casino Ballroom, WWII on the island, learn about Chicken Johnny, the S.S. Catalina, diving for coins, delivering newspapers around Avalon, his purchase of a house on the hillside, the 2007 fire on the island and much more!
The documentary was filmed and produced by Bill Banning and Alison Armstrong of Story Bank Productions. Their studio is located in Santa Monica. Bill Banning is a descendant of the Banning family that owned Catalina Island/Santa Catalina Island Company before it was purchased by the William Wrigley Jr. and he is passionate about sharing the island’s fascinating history.
