Hard work, perseverance, the extreme will to never give up, and the sheer love and passion for the game of chess. India's 85th Grandmaster P Shyaam Nikhil proved that if you are determined and consistent, there is nothing you cannot achieve. It took twelve long years for Shyaam to score his final Grandmaster norm and on the 12th of May, 2024 he did it at the Dubai Police Masters 2024. I saw a FIDE tournament in BHEL Tiruchirappalli in 1978 (?) during my college days. I saw Ravisekar, Pravin Thipsay , Ghalib and Hassan in action . At that time only GM in Asia barring USSR was Torre from Philippines.
Today I am happy to see GM 85 from India 🇮🇳. Really a big jump forward and it has gathered pace in recent years.
Now Nationals will be at a higher level compared to many international tournaments
I congratulate Nikhil for his tenacity
I appreciate Railways for supporting sports in significant way
