Good ole Western Star, 1st built in Kelowna BC, they were eyeing the logging market, then bought out, Kenworth, Pacific, Hayes and Mack made some great 16' bunk size truck, loved driving those beasts, some 14 ' had 5and 4 tranny's, lots of folk don't even know what that is. and no air, 500 gallon water tank behind cab for cooling brakes, look em up, that driving.
I'm actually surprised the truck is a 10 speed. I first thought maybe a 15 but I didn't see the deep reduction switch on the side. Awesome video and nice shifting
Thanks, Most often with short haul under 80K I never found the need for more than 10, most of the time unloaded I’ll only hit 6-7 even in a truck with 18 gears in a box.
@@SuperDriver379 very true. Always get a laugh at the bobtail o/o going through all 18 gears so the other drivers know how many gears they have. I've been stuck with a Cascadia with a DT 12 autoshift lately. Beautiful truck but the autoshift never knows what gear it wants
Every automatic transmission I drove thought the engine needed to be at 2,200 on the tachometer all the time, like they didn’t tell them peak torque was under 1,500...
@@SuperDriver379 the Cascadia that I drive was detuned from 505 to 400 HP and the performance mode in the transmission was deleted at companies request so pulled a hill it won't shift down til 1000rpm and will skip every second gear regardless of weight. Then when you use manual mode you don't get your fuel bonus but your truck most likely will end up at the shop. And warming up in winter time is frowned upon too. Waste of fuel apparently. If you have a/p haul ass.
WOW, phantastic views, please do more of them, please if possible longest lasting possible from underneath drivers cab floor, to open view on pedal segments activated by drivers feet in the cabin and steering linkage....would be awesome to save pics of this mechanical technology threatened by new electric drives....
Thought it sounded like a Detroit , I drive one in GA got a T800 glider with a 550 6NZ 10 spd 3.90s we have to get pulled and pushed a lot here too that red clay is like ice here .
could you make another video where every time you shift you clutch as well i just wish you could bc not alot of guys do that anymore and i would like to see you drive the traditional way atleast just in the video you make of course! hope you can bud!
Yeah them drivers on the truck are road tires. Get yourself some meats brother.... Hell in Minnesota we wouldn't even be able to turn off the road with those. Lol
I don't use the clutch to change gears, only to start moving. the proper way to use the clutch on a big non-syncro transmission is to double clutch and I see that as pretty pointless, I see the reasoning behind it, but its an extra step to accomplish the same goal.
I totally understand im learning that double clutch sequence for my truck and I was only asking because you might actually do a dang good job at showing me how to do it which is why I asked you maybe you could consider doing it for me and in return I will subscribe to your channel and add some of my friends on there to give you a good amount of views... hope you can!
I know what you meant, the tires were ribbed trailering tread not a lugged gripper tread. You were spot on right but in that shitty soft wet beach sand they were in more traction may have led to broken axles, especially when heading in empty. In our little part of Heaven known as Northern Ontario we run lugged tires year round because half our miles are on bush trails.
A 6x6 truck here would not be cost effective, seeing as we drive 1-2 miles off highway and 300-400 miles on highway, highway driveability is more important, if you had short hauls and most the distance was off highway, and there wasn't machinery readily available to assist off road I'm sure it would be different.
I would highly doubt it on a non-synchro RTO Eaton with full synthetic fluid, if 5 minutes a day resting your hand on a shifter destroyed the transmission you'd think that would be a huge liability to Eaton.
I see you just assumed that after watching a clearly time edited video? Show me a truck driver that checks his brakes every 50 miles... Once every other tank of fuel is more than sufficient if you know how to operate the pedal in the middle.
In my experience as far as I can tell, nowhere seems to be an idiot free work environment, there's always one around. From log trucks to A frames there's always an idiot nearby that needs to be looked after to keep him from hurting himself or others...
i have a pete 379 with mud tires for when i log. Shes black with red stripes and a skull that says if you can read this back the fuck up...........sorry for the language
I drove a grey 379 with a does not play well with others sticker on the drivers side door, and this is America you have freedom of speech, for now anyways.
my pop started out driving log truck in the mountains of Northern California back in 67.I went with him on a few runs when i was 7 years old and that was a blast. He rolled it of a 500 foot canyon one day in 75 and that was enough for him.He was 22 at the time. He's had a few accidents since then but been a driver for 46 years.Hauls wood chips up in northern California now,In and out of Redding California and White city Oregon. He is the best.He hasn't had an accident since the 70s.I love my dad.
you're an awesome kid then haha. are you a son or a daughter? It probably doesn't matter but I ask anyway. im a son. my old man isn't a trucker but my brother is. he retired from driving recently he's only 34 but he wants to do other things. im trying to be a trucker for ups but they're making it really hard for me. ill probably eventually go over the road somewhere else. California, Oregon, Washington are dream drives for me. definitely want to drive through there. im in NJ and there isn't many rural woodsy areas here but PA and upstate NY are pretty awesome.
Yeah lmao. Drivers will never be replaced. I would buy tesla one day but they have to master the arts of off-road trucking first. Their current truck is any other old piece of plastic

1st get rid of them street tires, 2nd use those diff locks and inter lock and that little bit of mud won’t stop you at all. I been driving a log truck for 21 yrs in Mississippi 3rd get them cd’s out of the way, they gonna cause a blind spot
The rear was locked up the whole time I was off the highway, if you watched the video before I strapped down to get on the pavement I unlocked them. The tires were the original tires they’re open shoulder now.
I did that in the mid eighties with a CL9000 Ford with a 425 Cat 3406 and a 13 speed. Got drug in and drug out many times in the Georgia red clay. Man if you got 500 hp get you some better tires and use it.

thats cool how the log dragger helps with the trailer
Logan Curry the skidder
Logan Curry not uncommon to have some skidder help
Skidder man has the most important job. Making sure the loader man has wood to send out. And is keeping the loader man's job easy.
I think the most amazing thing about this video is that this driver still has CDs in his truck😂👌
I have a cassette in mine haha.
That driver looks like a young boy
I still have a heart for trucking after 20 years!!!!!!!
thats one way to turn a truck around.
Very cool video thank you for sharing and uploading.

nice vid!! love the back window view
I was going to say that maybe you might have worked the Willis log facility if you're working this part of Texas. Thanks for the ride!
man he should really have some off road tires damn
I agree, ay too much spinning in the deep sand, causing a lot of delays having to push ot trucks not designed to go off road!
Hey, he likes Dethklok! Nice! ^^ And the song is fitting, too: CRUSH THE INDUSTRY! \m/
You mean the cartoon
This was cool!..best logging truck vid I've ever seen..plenty of logging trucks racing around here in New Zealand...just subbed
Be safe mate :).

SOunds Great with ear phone plugs in.
I liked the video. Seems so scary to drive that truck.
Ya, I subscribed right away! awesome vidja!!
The only thing missing to make this extreme " macho" is Hank Williams Jr. Playing.
Un vrai truck à bois. Western Star is best in the best heavy Truck Log
God damn that looks fun.
Get yourself a good kw that’s what my dad drove it has 600 hp in it twin turbos and a hella lot of work put in it
must be one hell of a job keeping these trucks on the road, and watchen out for the other guy or girl drivers,
Awesome video
Love it this is my dream
My back fuckin hurts after driving my dump truck all day i cant imagine what this feels like
could you make another video where every time you shift you clutch as well i just wish you could bc not alot of guys do that anymore and i would like to see you drive the traditional way atleast just in the video you make of course! hope you can bud!

woo 100th subscriber, what do i win?! lol I drive a 2009 Western Roll-off truck. Cheers.
Thanks, you win knowledge of being the 100'th subscriber!
cool video
More aggressive tires needed. Keep her in 5th and floor it to get unstuck. Too low of gear won't get the mud off the tires
It’s very sandy there, only hit the clutch on wheel hop to save the driveline.
I would love to just drive a rig for a living but since the money isn't the greatest I don't think I'll do that
Landon Siirila it is within time i know a fee guys who make well over 100k some guys even 200k or more
can you possibly make a video where you use the clutch every time you shift maybe I hope it isn't too much im asking for awesome guy thnx

If you put chains, does it makes difference ?
earth first, we'll log the other planets later
those are highway tires. not bush tires
glad we have an expert here. Looks like they did the job.
"bush tires" lol
His mom's a bush tire, she makes her rounds
I know what you meant, the tires were ribbed trailering tread not a lugged gripper tread. You were spot on right but in that shitty soft wet beach sand they were in more traction may have led to broken axles, especially when heading in empty. In our little part of Heaven known as Northern Ontario we run lugged tires year round because half our miles are on bush trails.
Cool!
Just got a job doing this is there and pros and cons to know?
Long hours and low pay, but you are home everyday.
what were you listening too?? it sounds awesome!
You should have gotten a long logger truck with lockers
That truck has lockers, power divider and diff lock.
What gvwr you at or can go to. Wouldn't a 4 alxes trailer w/ a 3 alxes truck be better for really heavy fucking weight.
do you match the revs on the downshifts or just slip the clutch?
Rev match both directions.
Europe: 6x6 multilock logging Trucks
USA: Normal Trucks with street tires getting stuck in every fucking shithole
In America our trucks drive nicely at 150km/h and short haul is an 600 mile day.
93mph? thaha. Exept in Nevada, Arizona etc. where else can you go faster than 65?
Most of the interstate, and most state Highways in Texas.
Nice!
Don't get me wrong, I love american trucking.
Still can't understand why you are using stock trucks for offroad logging.
A 6x6 truck here would not be cost effective, seeing as we drive 1-2 miles off highway and 300-400 miles on highway, highway driveability is more important, if you had short hauls and most the distance was off highway, and there wasn't machinery readily available to assist off road I'm sure it would be different.
That truck doesn't have all the emissions garbage on it.... does it?
No, just mufflers
Looks like an LTL.
Are you double clutching?
No.
We call it floating, I think the technical term is rev matching.
If you ride with your hand on the shifter like that it fucks up the transmission
I would highly doubt it on a non-synchro RTO Eaton with full synthetic fluid, if 5 minutes a day resting your hand on a shifter destroyed the transmission you'd think that would be a huge liability to Eaton.
You don’t even go out and inspect your load or what ? Check brakes ?
I see you just assumed that after watching a clearly time edited video? Show me a truck driver that checks his brakes every 50 miles...
Once every other tank of fuel is more than sufficient if you know how to operate the pedal in the middle.
don t know where your going with a wood truck with highway tires for starters ,
These are the first set of tires ever put on the rims, it was brand new on the filming of this video.
Where are you working,? ie. video location, thanks
Carthage Texas.
How can you shift gears with out clutching?
Rev matching
Do more videos

what's with the camo hat and camo backpack!?

Thanks from Texas. Tho we where Mexico originally.
A western star truck is like a freightliner classic and a kenworth t800 had a baby.
i haul timber for a living in SC. i see y'all have a dempsey mill their too.

Everything in the woods out there is sand silt, I unlocked everything as I got to the good gravel road.
I haul milk now and I admire all the logging trucks I pass, I wanna try it someday. sweet video bro

Ernie Desjardins how is the power on your Cummins after the mod?
Glad to see im not the only one that uses the ash tray as a phone holder in their star
Curtis R I do the same in my Freightliner. Perfect for the gps app 👌👌
Gotta love them Jake Brakes!
Im just starting my courses for my class 1 (in british columbia a Class 1 license is required for truck driving). I used to drive 32 foot 5 ton trucks. Over time ive absolutely come to love older Mack trucks and volvos haha. I drove a 10 speed international and a brand new auto international when i drove 5 tons

I'd rather have the 425 cat and a 13 speed. Fuck a 10 speed. 500 isn't that much bigger especially a detroit
I agree. I simply meant there's a lot of difference between driving on the blacktop and in that (what appears to be) sugar sand your driving in. but yeah there are idiots around every corner
Its like driving a tri axle through pipe lines
Normally how much distance you travel in a day in truck? How much hours you work? At what time you start the work?
This is why I use the old CCC M916. 400 hp might not be much but I have a power rear divider and a live air locking front axle.
