My house is 103 years old and I love my hydronic system. Those radiators kick ass. I go up in the attic and bleed the system every year and last year me and a couple of buddies changed all my returns, in the crawl going back to the boiler because most of them were in the ground and leaking. Now it really kicks ass.
Steve you were very polite, and courteous with the lady today..i like "calm steve", analytical, focused, probing, evaluating. You are entering legend status
she was a sweet old lady late 80 or early 90s.just wanting help to make sure her heat was working ok . she said she was disabled not . she seem to get around with a cane . and sat down a lot .i was there to help and calm her worrying down . and assure her things would be fine .or i am just a phone call away .
She said you were there in 1917!! I knew you had a lot of experience, but man ... you've been doing this for over 100 years!! No wonder you know your stuff!!
Your ok Steve God Bless that Lady. She keeps her house very nice it must have been a pleasure to work there compared to the other shit shows you worked at last week!

The combination of Steve's brusque demeanor and the way he dotes on the dainty Ms. Molly is just perfect. :) It really shows what a Teddy bear Steve is.
I was kinda surprised how much air there was, wonder if that caused some of the loud banging, but I do think it definitely effected circulation. Glad that Steven did check those so the lady won’t be cold, hopefully 😊
I have a system almost identical to that.... But I have a radiator at one upstairs and one downstairs that are completely cold but I'm already is a blood out and have water.... What do you think would be the issue there?
Feel like I’m back at my parents house every fall bleeding all the radiators…no auto feeder. I put one in finally. Old coal boiler converted to oil. What a beast.
I've got these cast iron radiators... take a while to heat up and even when they do, the house is still cold. Hot to the touch but step a few feet away and I can't feel them. I'm starting to think the warm air is escaping through the windows. Good video thankyou.
LOL ... its funny how you think when you see stuff. After over 60 years of work sometimes you just instinctively react to things without a single thought. When the first radiator sprouted water, I moved my coffee cup from in front of my screen so it wouldn't get into my coffee . It's a big screen and almost looks real, sounds stupid but I laughed right after only realizing what I did after the fact. Love these videos !
My mom has an old hydronic system with 4-in cast iron supply lines that have been neglected for 20 years not sure what I should do. Was thinking about putting in 2 manifolds in running pex to each radiator, with 1 0011 taco pump running each manifold I guess my question is would that be the right call and if so what size line should I run
My question is how did air even get into the system someone obviously did work on the system or she has a slow leak somewhere. Really curious what is going on
Those "Rolex plugs" sound expensive! LOL! She said 1917...did she mean 2017? Nice touch, closing the windows AND locking them! Especially these days with co many criminals about to get a get out of jail free card...and undocumented cab drivers lurking with screw drivers.
My problem is the zoning is front and back of house ( because back in the day the back was a bakery ). My upstairs is sauna hot and my downstairs is too cool. If I remember correctly years again my maintenance guy told me the valve to the radiators up there are so old, they can’t be turned off. (Because the are stuck, rusted) My question is, under normal circumstances..... should I be able to use the valve to turn down, or off, the flow to these old type radiators? All winter the upstairs windows are open AND my kids run fans to try to cool their rooms wasting electricity. Plus they get so hot they come down and turn the thermostats all the way off and then my downstairs ends up freezing again. It’s a never ending battle that I’m tired of fighting. 😢
Some of mine leak and I don't know how to maintain these radiators. Going to have to call someone soon. I'm in the north shore area. What does it mean if it leaks?
Thank you for passing your knowledge forward. I need help ; information on module home down flow furnace with a.c. humidifier installation ; how to install.
You know it’s a guy who is proud of his work when he says. “I’m not he only show in town there are other guys” she’s had the other guys in before and knows what you offer offer Steve. Gr at job!!!
I'm trying to figure out why my Crown boiler isn't blowing steam upstairs. Pilot works, I don't know what's wrong with this thing. It was working fine before I brought the house, now I want to just get out of here. I feel like there was foul play before I was able to actually move in. Makes no sense to me and winter is here smh...
What Breed Dog is Ms.Molly she is lovely? I happened to take in a Mr.Max over the pandemic and no one can tell me his breed but Ms.Molly looks very similar people usually say Mx looks like a little fox. 🥰
Thank you for vid, was hoping to learn something new. But know these basics bleeding. Especially when companies wanna charge to come over and do it for $150-$200. WT....🙀 FREEZINNNNNNNNN CHI Weather -20 our RADIATORS HOTTTT but thermostat shows barely 67 and dropping.!?!?!😔🙈 Crazyyy
in my apartment has 6 radiators. one in my room,, one in my kichten, one in bedroom, and playroom. we never have gotten to do all this. but in 3 years ago back in between Oct and half Nov of 2019, all my radiators were leaking. and it was making noise. like for example clicking noise, and banging nosie. so and the landlord plumber his name vinny. he had to come and fix all of the radiators. and then they worked perfectly fine. but sometimes, we have a bit problem when the radiators were on, sometimes it's not strong warm enough. that means the landlord plumber probably didn't set the meter on high, or probably forgot to set it on high, or could be something got stuck in the radiator, or underneath the radiator. like something like that. and sometimes it probably take some time for it to come on the heat for no reason when the weather is super cold.
Tha vast majority is getting of heat is getting wasted from those uninsulated pipes, heating up the basement. Big system needs higher pressure and check for any kind of leak even in the valves of radiators sucking air especially in the returns. Also a deaerator in the higher point of the system should be installed to automatically take out any air in the system.
I admire how well you care for senior women AND men. Some elders seem to not have the money to compensate you. I wonder if Medicare or local Social Services would help pay for your elder's emergency heating or plumbing repairs. Better do emergency heating repairs rather than wind up in the hospital, right?
Those feeders always stick 1156. Also noticed nothing is insulated. See this a lot unfortunately-When the original system was installed- everything was wrapped in asbestos, which made a huge difference in heating efficiency. Now when a new system goes in. Everything gets abated and none of the piping is isolated. It is in the code , that those pipes need to be rewrapped. Pretty much common sense.
uninsulated pipe will heat the basement hence heat the floor .that will make to a warm floor / house when its cold out ...i would leave it as is without insulation .sometime you have to look at the big picture .insulating all them pipes in basement would be a big bill for sure .. never going to happen
Cast iron is the best ,holds the heat ! Just cover them if you don't Ike the looks ,works better than fin tube.IMO! 🥃🥃🍺🍺🍺🍿🎯 Stay safe. Retired (werk'n)keyboard super tech. Wear your safety glasses!
I'd like to ask Steve why my 100+ year old house doesn't have an expansion tank. I'm bleeding air out of the radiators like this every month! No good mama.
@@tedlahm5740 it's got a big circulator on it. Don't think there's a leak because I put it to 20 psi to reach the third floor and the feeder only kicks on at like 14 psi but it never drops below about 19. I asked a plumber one time and he said all boilers have an expansion tank but I swear my system doesn't!

What psi do these old systems usually run at? Is it written somewhere on the boiler itself?
Thank you!
Steve can automatic air vents be put in the 2nd story rads to help with the bleeding?
best to put them in the rads. that get the most air. my system only needed one on the rad. closest to the boiler on the main level
you can but most of the time they will leak over time . not a good idea.
My question is how did air even get into the system someone obviously did work on the system or she has a slow leak somewhere. Really curious what is going on
not sure probley someone opened up the system to work on it and never bleed it properly .

Where did the air come from? Seems like those pipes below could be insulated very easy to help with heat loss in freezing cold weather.
How far can you turn the key ?
Lots of air to purge. At least it’s a nice place with a nice host!
