Jomox Alpha Base tutorial - Part I - Simple step editing and a little voice editing

- In this video I'm starting with the absolute basics. Just setting up a simple kick and hi-hat pattern and a bit on voice parameter edits and layout. I had an issue with my voice volume...just turn it up or wear headphones. The information is good.

Excellent tutorial! I love drum machines and been happy with my Jomox eurorack kick drum module and looking at getting the Alphabase to use with my other gear. How reliable and easy is it to live with compared to say the Elektron Rytm?
I have been trying to figure out rolls for hours. It is damn near impossible
respect. probably easier to sequence externally my friend. the onboard stuff is wacky.
well, it is crazy because there is an order o which you must press the buttons@@cdwhiley 🤧
Thanks for putting this up. How’s the midi implementation on the AB. Any issues with the Deluge sequencing it?
I'm not sequencing it with the Deluge, only sending it clock. That may change in the future but for now I want to master the internal sequencer of the AB.
Charles Whiley gotcha 👌
I wonder too if my Hapax sequencer would work well to send MIDI sequences to each drum voice on the Jomox? Way easier to program than the confusing user interface of the Jomox sequencer for sure and can view multiple sequences on one pane of glass. I think Jomox Alphabase plus my Virus TI2 would be a match made in heaven! Jomox for drums and Virus for bass and pads.
I cant hear your voice with the thing running. Super.
How do you like the alpha base so far? I havent got a chance to get too aquanted with it, but im a bit frustrated so far. Im more used to my MFB drum machine and like how the parameters are much simpler and makes it easier to just get a good beat going right away. I feel like this box has way too many "bells and whistles". Even the xbase 999 looks more appealing to me. I really want to like this box but Im considering looking for an xbase 999. Appreciate your feedback!
Look it's not perfect. I like it but as with high end gear...sometimes I think your level of happiness is directly tied to how many dollars you spent. In my case I traded a 1050cc 2008 Triumph motorcycle w/ less than 6000 miles on it for my Alpha Base and Moonwind filter. So I'm kind of attached to it. I can get good beats pretty fast though, it's not hard...and if you're sequencing externally....well you just have to do the work on that side. I'm using the internal sequencer. I'm not really using the parameter locks or the pitch sequencer but I have experimented with it. I've been using it since early April so about 8 months now I guess. Also this is my first drum machine so I can't compare it to anything. I've found a lot of the factory patterns are highly useful and I just monkey with them a little bit and get some nice patterns. What issues are you having not getting good beats? You don't like the sounds or the patterns? I only work in multi-mode also. I go into multi and start selecting voices from all the other kits. I rarely do any sound design but occasionally I mess with the filter and decay envelopes and tune the kick pitch. You're right it has a lot of bells and whistles but you don't have to use many of them if you don't want to. I want a 1U JazBase ;) I think they are underrated. I dunno if any of that helps. Feel free to check out my jam videos to hear the sounds I'm getting...all pretty basic. -Cheers.
@@cdwhiley man i am on the same train here. Selling my 2007 raven edition R1 for getting new parts for my productions..
This vs the rytm 2? In matters of rominimal/minimal tech. Or shall i stay with my r1 and just sell ny drumbrute and go with a tanzbar 1 or roland tr08
Much appreciated
I know rytm is a beast had the 1st edition..but it wasnt perfect. Now rytm 2 with four mk2 combo might be a dream i know but this alpha seems it can combine analogue synth with drum mach and rhytmbox all together in a more 'underground' philosophy kind of way huh?
it would go well with a Virus synthesizer!@@cdwhiley
Just curious, you say at 2:55 ”These sample based voices» and reference parts of the instruments.
I thought all the voices were analog and you could import your own samples?
Is not all the voices(BD,CH,OH,SNARE etc..) Analog per default?
the volume of this video is off. Voice too low and the base too high. Thanks for the tips though. Ill be seeing my unit in a few days.
I know it. Dadgummit. I can't fix it after the fact, and frankly don't really want to as it's still half usable. I'm going to be doing a ridiculously thorough series on this box and it takes FOREVER to get each in one take. I kind-of refuse to get into video editing. That is a step outside my scope. At any rate, I've fixed the issue. I'm uploading a new video right now that should be vastly improved, PartII.
Lol, I get recording videos and audio, and not wanting to re do them. Looking forward to the next one.
I'll eventually HAVE to delve into editing. Ugh. Part II is up now...
Yea, just peeped it. This series is going to help me a lot. Mostly, to get me on my feet quickly. Thanks for these videos.
Do you also use your external sequencer to trigger sounds?
@@VINYLCRATE I do sometimes. I recently switched to Cirklon so I’ll definitely be moving towards it instead of the internal sequencer.
So far, most people I know use P3 patterns. If you make your way to the Reddit, you'll see me spamming it with questions. Welcome to the Cirklon squad! Your walk through pushed me towards this amazing drum machine. Just arrived yesterday. Now to dig in!
@@VINYLCRATE I’m on Reddit but usually it’s a nightmare because the synthesizer community is chock full of liberals that wanna call you names after digging through every single comment you ever made. It’s a nasty place. I still post there and I’ve blocked most of the idiots.
his voice is so low and the jomox is sooooo loud xD
yea i messed up this video hugely :(
For instrument 3 + 4 "hi hat and open hh" i cant change the sample for some reason. I can change it on the other sample based sections except for this. Anybody know whats going on ??
so you pick a different slot number (4th knob I think?) what happens? it stays the same?
Yup , stays the same
@@tylergates4075 Unsure. So to be clear the slot number changes but the sound does not?
Yes i can turn the 4th knob as much as i want and the sample number will change, but the sound remains the same. Im guessing maybe theres a parameter of some type that is muting the sample.
@@tylergates4075 Perhaps I could send you some pictures of my parameter screens so you can compare. You shouldn't have to do much with the factory sounds, they just work. Have you loaded the new firmware? There's been bug fixes but what you are describing is not one of them. If you find me on facebook I can send you pics of the screens so you can compare to yours. -Cheers

the volume of the voice is much too quiet, the volume of the jomox is way too loud. very annoying
oh well. maybe you're the annoying one. ;)
@@cdwhiley i didn't mean to offend you. Don't you think the volumes are not in balance?
@@dieterdn I know they are. I made this video years and years ago and I made a mistake. I can't fix it now. To be fair what I am talking about is nearly useless as I had barely owned the machine and barely knew how to use it.
Братишка, мне нихрена не слышно
I know this video is pretty old and you're probably aware of this but it's insanely annoying that the machine's volume is about 40db louder than your voice
yep. about the 10th comment. knew it when i did it. didnt care enough to fix it then, sure dont care now. Enjoy.
@@cdwhiley no problem! cool machine, that's what matters :)
