I enjoyed watching your Prius V build in my Prius V camper. In my experience, using an electric heater and thermostat like you did is much more efficient than using the engine coolant method. I've been compiling a Prius Dweller Campers playlist. There are a lot of innovative ideas out there.
Wow, Doug, if you decide to post or publish your Prius Playlist, I’d love it if you might share the link. Happy December to all, and to Lex, I hope you’re in warmer climates!!
Thanks for sharing the playlist! I currently own a 2013 Prius and have looked into converting it into something I can camp in/travel long distance. However, seeing the dual sunroof and extra room in this Prius V makes me think maybe I should trade in for a Prius V. However, I really prefer the interior design of the regular Prius better, especially the dash and entertainment system. What are your thoughts on using a 2013 Prius vs a 2013 Prius V for camping etc? Thanks in advance! @@dougt8215
man...u r a real handy man! I have a 2016 Prius and don't know where to take it to do a custom build because im not handy at all! U should start a Prius Converter Camper business and ill be your first customer! Believe me! Theres a lot of Prius owners like myself who wants to convert it but dont have the tools or skills to build it and would rather pay someone with the right skills!
I highly suggest you put dark black fabric on the outside of the window covers. If you get the windows tinted dark, then it will just look like you have extra dark window tint, when people see it from the outside, at night. The reflective insulation is a dead give away that you are sleeping in there
In my Prime, I have reflectix on one side, black cloth on the other side. Black is better for stealth, but reflectix is necessary in hot weather during the day. Just swap sides of the car to change color.
Love that qoute at the end, absolutely agree. Great video loved it. Amazing work u put into that build. I havent seen a lot of PriusV buils on YT so this was a real treat getting to see your build and the journey it took you, thanks.
The extra battery is brilliant, I've camped in my prius c (A little bit smaller than V) and was awakened by the engine constantly kicking in to power the heater
The extra battery is mainly to handle a larger inverter load. If you engine kicks in too often, you are losing power somewhere or your hybrid battery is at the end of its life
I wouldn't say it was kicking in too often, but just enough to keep me from falling asleep 😂 Would you say the engine kicks in less frequently with your setup than using the standard heating system?@@LexBuildAdventures
I just got a V yesterday and am looking forward to getting on the road for more adventures. I have a roadtrek but the fuel consumption is prohibitive for to much long drive adventures.
In your more section please add a list and detail of (and if you can Watts they use) all the gear you have, like Battery, Inverter, refrig, Microwave, crockpot, coffee maker, etc:
Very cool build. That said, I have a few ideas that may work. 1. It would be interesting to put some type of suction cup bulb on the roof of the Prius where you could store a tarp in there and then fold it out to completely cover it. That would help out with insulation in the snow and you could just pull off all the snow when you're ready to go. You may also be able to weight down the ends. 2. Heating is a challenge because it takes a lot of energy. That's why direct contact heating is far superior. I would recommend using carbon fiber heating elements, sometimes of which are found in vests or jackets. They will keep you warm without an issue and are often USB. You could also use direct contact for cooling with a Peltier device. 3. I don't know how I feel about the battery and the inverter setup. I have been seeing gigantic power station (2.2kWh, 2000w continuous, and 4000 watts peak) for $630 USD at times. They have pass through power and can charge via solar up to 500w. They can have multiple USB outlets and plenty of USB ports. I would recommend LiFePO4 chemistry as those last the longest, but are more expensive. It could take up far less space than a battery and inverter and all the wires as it would be self-contained and more organized. These also have 12v DC output. 4. You may be able to create a window mount where you have a HEPA filter on it, a fan to pull air through it, and then a slider that you can open and close with a removeable maget from the inside. You could also remove the window mount/filter/fan combo completely to shut the window and just run AC. Add a tube on the fan to direct airflow. This could also help to keep the battery cool in the car when it's hot outside. Those are some ideas I have and may try out myself. Hope they help!
some interesting ideas :) I do currently have a heated vested and a heated blanket, which I used at times. I used AGM as a battery because it is the default chemistry in the prius. To use LifePo4, you would need to have a separate dc to dc charger for it. I bought all the equipment to do this, but have not gotten around to it yet. I did consider window mounted air circulation, but decided to just hardwire into the prius existing hvac fan so that I can run it off my house battery, instead of having the prius turned on. This way I can run it all night, get filtered outside in with all windows closed. I think its the best option for rainy days and stealth.
@@LexBuildAdventures That is good to hear about the vest and blanket. As for the battery, I meant to say I think the best option is to just get a large power station. Some power stations are 2kWh, LiFePo4 for longevity and more charging cycles, can recharge via solar panels, can output 12v DC, have tons of USB ports and wall adapters that can output 2000w continuous and 4000w peaks, and can do passthrough power when charging. Specifically, I have had experience with the Topshak TS-PS2000 (power station), which I wish was LiFePo4, but has been enough of a beast to power off grid easily. It's also quite compact and powerful for the size. I found some at $630 a while back, but they are not around at that price anymore. In terms of solar panels, I have thought of creating a drawer type roof rack system to slide out an extra solar panel to each side for maximizing power. I have seen some 450w solar panels for $250 ea. You could also plug in a battery tender to the power station to ensure the car 12v battery is properly charged as well. Other than that, I think running your car HVAC fans indepedently is more effective than window mounted circulation, especially with activated carbon and HEPA air filters.

How it works? You have connected another 12V battery to car battery and both to the inverter? 🤔 Is it safe? How you control that you don’t deplete battery when you are cooking? Car charge both of them when you drive?
Yes, I connected a much higher capacity battery (same chemistry) as the stock battery, in parallel. Its perfectly fine if set up correctly. It does not deplete when cooking because the built in Prius charger outputs 100amps to charge the 12v battery, which is more than enough for most cooking circumstances. As long as the car is on, the battery should not deplete.
Where will you add the swimming pool😉….. but jokes aside, you should use only a 100 watt heater. Prius is a small place to heat, and your batteries will last much longer.
I had that problem when i left my camper sitting on my farm while i backpack travelled for a bit, when i got back there was mouse poop in it, had to do a big cleaning, never had problems outside that. But I heard irish spring soap bars work.

Be careful about turning around any passenger seat with an airbag on the door side of the seat. You don't want it to punch the driver in the head. So, you'd have to deal with at least disconnecting it, then the issues that might cause with warnings, etc.

2014 and it's got the upgraded sounds system and heated seats so maybe the 3 or 4? I'm not sure. Nope i actually gained head room by moving the battery.
The solar panel on 4th gen i think is just to run a fan to exhaust cabin heat when parked. The latest one i think actually charges the battery but very little per day

I checked with the lithium battery manufacturer and they said its needed and i cant delete it, but i dont know if that was for liability reasons since i assume lifepo4 batteries have a much higher c raiting and wont over heat.
