    Children, you must keep in mind the era this was made.
    Film was new, and adults were the main assumed audience for all theatrical content - including cartoons. Cartoons didn't get relegated to "children's fare" specifically until the coming of television, when things like cartoons and puppet shows were put on what were considered dead-time slots, which became children's viewing ghettos (similar to weekday afternoons being "for" soap operas, and weekday mornings being mostly "for" game shows.)
    The Hayes Code didn't come along until, what, 1930? And pretty much killed off the racier early cartoon characters (Betty Boop in particular suffered from being tamed down.) From that point on, all theatrical releases had to conform to what are now considered "family-friendly" standards (at least as far as that era was concerned) ... the invention of ratings in 1968 freed creators to once again offer adult fare while ignoring the hell out of children - though in North America, the damage to cartoons was already done .. they had been firmly relegated to stupid, silly, cheaply produced kid's fare in the public mind, despite the fact that the best and most popular Saturday Morning fare - old Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies, for instance - were themselves old theatrical cartoons (before the chop shops got ahold of them in the late 80s onward, cutting up some cartoons so badly, they became utterly unitelligible, for to "keep up" with "modern sensibilities". Others simply disappeared from the roster.)
    When this cartoon was made, theatres did not have "showtimes". They would simply start running the reels from opening to closing, and patrons would come and go as they pleased. This is the origin of "This is where we came in" .. people weren't fussed walking into a movie halfway through, and would simply sit through the newsreels, serials, cartoons, and shorts until the feature came back around again.
    And in 1919, people were still reeling from a devastating world war the likes no one had seen before. Dark times breed dark humour.

    Felix was the first real 'cartoon character' made, and they endorsed the living crap out of him. The sound came along and it just so happened that Walt D. decided to put sound in his damn cartoon, and it fit perfectly. Wheres with Felix, felix was not made to have sound, it was mostly visual effects. Then came Betty Boop, Popeye, etc. Micky Mouse just happened to gain more publicity than the others. Imagine a world where instead of DisneyWorld, we would have MessmerWorld.

      Well, what they used was a statue of Felix for to broadcast across a room, when they were developing TV technology. And cartoons this old were meant for general theatre release, before ratings, before the Hayes code, etc, when no one really thought of children as an "audience" or really worth worrying about too much (it was up to parents whether they could go to movies or not, after all.) While people might be more careful about content children see nowadays, they're still basically a side-issue, usually given cheap, low-rent entertainment (because kids are stupid and will watch any cartoon or puppet crap ... so the general belief goes.)

    Good god that was a dark ending... I mean, suicide...I guess what was considered okay in 1919, to show to kids at least, was pretty... lenient

    • @DZCorporation4LIFE
      @DZCorporation4LIFE 8 лет назад +16

      back in those days, cartoons were considered for adults.

      Really? That's interesting...

    • @DZCorporation4LIFE
      @DZCorporation4LIFE 8 лет назад +13

      ManiacX1999 yea, that's why back then you would see cartoon characters die, drink alcohol, smoke, shoot guns, commit suicide, and make sexual references.

    • @ManiacX1999
      @ManiacX1999 8 лет назад +2

      Daniel Z
      Then how did they... Wait, animators thought children were a bigger audience than adults, and probably a better one considering that it wouldn't be hard to entertain a child compared to an adult. So then why is animation today considered (ad arguably is) mostly for children? Has everyone just forgotten it's roots?

    • @DZCorporation4LIFE
      @DZCorporation4LIFE 8 лет назад +9

      ManiacX1999 It's just because later they realized they had better success with a younger audience then it slowly changed into cartoons are mostly considered for children. still, even today there are references or innuendos that only adults will get and not children. that way some adults can also enjoy some aspects of a cartoon even it's still for kids.

    I love seeing that in an ordinary home the stove was wood burning, an average woman could be expected to wear a long skirt and have her hair in a bun, and other details that show the customs of the period - not to mention the verbiage!
    This was great.
