In my head canon, the Saber class is a replacement for the aging Miranda class (which ended up being in use much longer than originally intended since Starfleet kept finding new uses for the Mirandas as time went on). The Mirandas were 100 years old and, despite proving so upgradable over the years, were finally showing their limitations vs Starfleet's need. Saber is intended to fulfill all the roles the Mirandas found themselves in by the TNG era... hopefully lasting another 100 years.
Saber Class is one of my favorite newer ship designs. I know some fans feel differently, but Alex Jaeger designed this as one of the new ships made to better defend against threats such as the Borg. That was the real purpose behind this, the Akira Class, the Steamrunner Class, and the Norway Class. Sure, the ship's have different functions they can serve in, but being designed primarily for battle situations was first and foremost the reason for their creation. These ships came into being under Commander Shelby ' s initiative to rebuild Starfleet after Wolf 359. This is why we now have the Sovereign Class and Quantum Torpedoes. This is how I choose to believe things played out...my own personal canon if you will. I mean, if real canon would have me believe that the Saber has been around for 12 years and was a replacement for the Oberth, then I must reject official canon, lol!
I just discovered your show, and think I'll enjoy it quite a bit. The Saber episode is the first one I watched, and I gravitated immediately to the Saber, as I have a professional attachment to the ship. My wife Christina F. York and I wrote two of the "Star Trek SCE" (Starfleet Corps of Engineers) original novels from Pocket Books, and that series featured the U.S.S. da Vinci, a Saber class ship. I was pleased to see the forward located shuttle bays. I believe I MAY be responsible for those. Our first book needed to make extensive use of the shuttle bays, and I couldn't figure out where they were located from any of the (very limited) information about the ship given to us as writers. The only location I could figure that would be work was that curved inset on the front of the saucer. Some of the (few) pictures we had showed that as simply a featureless panel. Others had some kind of lines there, that might have been doors, or panel lines, or viewports, or something else. It was hard to tell. So I went to my editor and said, "is that where the shuttle-bays are?" Now, mind you, the books weren't canon, but they were vetted closely by Paramount (my wife had a story shot down because she had a shuttlecraft stationed at DS9, and one had never been seen on screen before; they were that picky), and I think the Saber was specifically chosen for the series because it was an obscure ship about which little was established (or likely to be established in the future) on-screen. And he went away and came back a few days later and said, "they are now!" Now, perhaps that was the intention of the model designers all along, and I simply reverse engineered it based on the rather poor photo reference and limited drawings we had. But until other information comes along, I'm willing to take my tiny bit of credit for establishing that bit of Star Trek lore. Once I did have forward-facing shuttlebays, I came up with what I thought was a nice story use for them, establishing that the da Vinci's captain liked to break regulations and open them while the ship was at warp, standing behind the force field and looking out at space the way and ancient sea captain would look out at the sea before his ship. We had a lot of fun writing our two books in the series, and so the Saber (I actually always liked the Sabre spelling better) class will always be a favorite of mine. Keep up the good work. J. Steven York
+J. Steven York I have never seen a professional contributor to any expanded universe contribute like this. It's oddly comforting to see that you seem to be a legitimate fan. Thank you for this!
@@Soliprem the Defiant wasn't meant to be flexible. It was meant to kick Borg ass along with about 500 more of them participating. It was it's one and only purpose.
Agreed Mr_E_Monkey. Nothing about the Saber Class says science ship. It was designed by Alex Jeager to be a part of Starfleet's Anti-Borg fleet, and it looks the part. You wouldn't send a bunch of Oberth class ships into battle. It seems obvious that the Nova Class is indeed the new science ship and Oberth replacement. I don't know what fan would try to make the Saber Class a science ship, but they are wrong.
i dont know.... the hutts had that science ship called dark saber in star wars expanded universe lore... it sent a peaceful exploration beam of super heated plasma energy towards other ships and planets. Science is full of lasers and plasma

nice show as always guys... I am actually flying a Sabre (I'm Australian therefor the British spelling is correct Commander Cockings was right) in STO right now
To estimate the length you should have just scaled the lifeboats as a percentage of those seen on the sovereign. Alternatively the size of the ship relative to a standard photon torpedo during the Borg battle for Earth would have been consistent across all ship types. The Blu-ray should be hi enough resolution to see if it was in the 190 meter range.
I remember playing Starfleet Commander 3 back in the day. I used to use the Saber to pwn Borg Cubes. All you ever had to do was run up to the Cube, fire a blast of pulse phasers and RUN until you get a decent sized-asteroid between you and it on line with your trajectory. The Borg would run into the asteroid and...let's just say resistance is comical.
The saber class is a tactical escort or Tactical ship. The Federation was needing hulls to cover missions and this is a simple ship to build. This is a Dominion War era ship so I expect volume of production was the main need.

If we only had some Startrek filmmakers with at least some sort of BallZzz to make a new show around a Sabre and Nova (Rhode Island variant) class vessel. And from time to time they work together with a Vesta Class ship. And the cpt. has a (Garak) personality ;) Can you imagine how cool this would be. But nooooooooo we get *OldPirate Picard* and a show that even the biggest FAN refuses to watch, just to keep sane ;).
Really love the design of this ship, its a small, sleek and nimble butt kicker of a ship that I remember distinctly from my watch through of First Contact. I think this is the best design from the First Contact movie, the akira and steamrunner designs are ok but I think this one tops them. 17:16 is it just me or does that look like a screenshot from the Sins of a solar Empire Modification "Armada 3 - Call to Arms"? Nice!:D I got introduced to that ship in video games at first as well and I have to say, I am quite suprised to see it being a science vessel. The design is great but I always thought it would be more fitting for a sleak military vessel than a science one.
So my first real introduction to this class was Star Trek Online where they classify it as an escort ship, instead of a science type ship, so I found it interesting that you all mentioned it as a science ship.
Dustin Gibbons I got introduced to it as an escort vessel as well. But I think with all the different variations of ships, it makes sense that starfleet constantly changes the classification of ships, putting older ships to new uses and so on.
+Dustin Gibbons i've never seen it used on screen as anything else than a support ship in bigger battles. The guy who designed it maybe thought of it as a science vessel initially, but it was never shown as such in canon, i would not expect anybody to think it was more than a small Ship with Phasers.
Saber should be written on the ship's hull, but Sabre should be how it appears in Starfleet databases, as we know that Starfleet had facilities in London.
Can you, Sirs, explain why deflector shields, used to clear flight path are located under the saucer section and how does it actually work. Thank you. If you already done that can you point me to the right episode? Thank you.
Have you guys covered the different between the Tier 3 version, the T5 Retrofit for 200,000 Fleet Credits, and the T5 Mirror Universe version which has the Lt Commander Science station?
I hope you guys done mind me asking. Since you did this ship the saber class. I would be curious to know if you would consider doing another known STO ship that was also seen in a scene of ST First Contact. The Steamrunner Class. Or perhaps The Steam Runner and Norway classes.
capt.foley I like both designs of the saber class ship also I want to mention I have built the ambassador class dreadnought and named her USS ENTERPRISE NCC-1701-C-2
In Star Trek Online, which is official, it says that the Sabre class is an escort designed for tactical operations. Nothing about it is scientific. The Nova class, on the other hand, is not designed for exploration but short term planetary research.
+phoenix1985 Its not "Canon" although it is an officially licensed property. If it has not appeared on screen it is not Canon, any future TV series will not be dependent on the stories or developments as shown in Star Trek Online, it is a game and as such it lends its ships to certain roles in certain ways. As for the Nova class, yes indeed.
I'd like to see a special episode as to why you think Starfleet needs to stay was the nacell design. Over and over again we have seen alien ships that are the equivalent of Starfleet yet they don't abide by the nacell design.
ECCM, Electronic Counter-Countermeasures is a term used in real life -> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_counter-countermeasure i have heard that term the first time when i played F22 Lightning 2 (Novalogic DOS Flight Simulator ... in the 90's) so... no wasn't a Vulcan who came up with that term.
Captains don't go down with the ship, however, they are the last off the ship once everyone under their charge (command or otherwise) are off the ship.
James Hook XD funny point. XD Yet in the JJ Verse Benedict's take on Khan actualy changed all that. And i quote. " No ship goes down without her captain.
Good job. This ship is a tough one because even the official sources are suspect. Don't be so apologetic. One disclaimer is sufficient before diving in.
I have read that the Saber was meant to be a Miranda-sized ship but with modern technology and similarly heavily-armed but not a true warship like the Defiant. But there is almost no canon info. I'm not sure the class name is even true cannon. Not that it matters in the abramsverse and there doesn't appear to be any more cannon coming from the prime universe.
After curiously looking it up, I found that according to the etymology of the word Sabre/Saber, it is a "type of single-edged sword, 1670s, from French sabre "heavy, curved sword" (17c.), alteration of sable (1630s), from German Sabel, Säbel, probably ultimately from Hungarian szablya "saber," literally "tool to cut with," from szabni "to cut." " excerpt from etymonline dot com. As we know, the English language is a rather complicated one due to having adopted several words from different languages, either forcibly or by choice throughout history. Personally, I am inclined to prefer the British version of Sabre over the American version. Although, in the end, I really couldn't care all that much about it because it doesn't change to much. As long as no one is a snob about it.
Hi guys. Great video yet again. I always thought I was hardcore about this stuff but you guys put me to shame which is a good thing because it means I learn something new. I would like to see future episodes on the USS Elkins "kitbash" from DS9. Its just such a messy ship that for me it has its own appeal. - Tony
Since Picard is making the Odyssey class canon, its possible the Aquarius class is as well. the Aquarius is a slightly smaller, but more powerful ship that fills the Defiant class' role; but with the ability to dock with, and be tended and transported by, the Odyssey class. Its basically a dedicated heavy escort for the Odyssey class vessels which are the new long range exploration vessels (the enterprise F is one. Also they are seriously tanky, yet pack a punch) Edit: there's also a dedicated carrier in beta canon that carries defiant class ships like a normal one carries fighters...
I'm almost positive they call he nova a planetary research ship not a science ship and they call the Intrepid a long term or deep space science vessel neither had anything to do with exploration spacific missions (in fact we never see a deep space explorer after TOS as far as I can tell outside of a Connie refit crash site in ds9), idk really think this class would be a better destroyer than the Steamrunner and the Akira a better replacement for the O'breth
That's never been clear to me, I figure either lower ranks might command those, or you might just get a different rate of Captains, say, less-experienced ones.
I'm a bit new to watching your Trekyard videos (and love 'em so far; you two do a great job)... So is there a video in which you both run down your favorite Trek ships?
This is a science ship? According to Star Trek Online its an Escort while the Oberth is considered a light Science Vessel. Is this based on mission profile?
I must say....I think the Mk1 has better lines....but...with the design dates being about 2340's and introduced into production in the 2350's or so....it just doesn't line up with when the departure from "traditional" lines and design guidelines. But...i agree that this is not a replacement for the Oberth.
The Saber class is ideal for its role. I think that it should be part of a task force, along with Akira class ships, similar to current Naval doctrine . Spelling is irrelevant, as in who cares?
+Cythil I'm not really sure if the term was invented by the US or UK: In WW2 we were closely operating together and it's possible either one of us came up with the term. Regardless, it is quote fascinating that it's called EPM in Europe.
Peter O. Yeah can be UK invention to. I had a hard time finding a proper etymology of the term however. Though ECCM has been used since WWII but I am not sure if the term has been back then. Maybe.
Why not settle the controversy yourselves and find out how many decks there are and the bridge then treat it like the birthday class when you did a size comparison to that controversy. That's just an idea maybe the ship is bigger than you think .

I figured the saber class as the poor man's defiant much like how I view the nova class is an intrepid class on a budget.
yep. I agree
ccghidorah1 what about the actual hangar bay capable of carrying two equally sized shuttle instead of one small and one smaller shuttle?
Only that the defiant is slower and has less flexibility (saber is the favourite of engeneers)

After this video it's one of my favourites. Looks a bit like a smaller, more hi tech Miranda class

And reduce risk of damage. What happens if the core tilts halfway out? Either it gets stuck or goes kaboom!
ECM and ECCM are terms very commonly used and are important in modern air combat so they applied them to space combat I imagine

Love the Sabre class
Samuel I love you, but it's Oberth class not Orbeth, every time you say Orbeth a kitten loses its wings.
And there is no english th in Oberth to pronounce. It's more like a hard t
I read it had more crew than the intrepid class some say it's bigger than the intrepid some say it's smaller weird lol
Hi guys. Great video yet again. I always thought I was hardcore about this stuff but you guys put me to shame which is a good thing because it means I learn something new. I would like to see future episodes on the USS Elkins "kitbash" from DS9. Its just such a messy ship that for me it has its own appeal.

Sabre Class, deal with it.
I'm pretty sure that Sabre is the french and Correct spelling, its only us dumb Americans that try to make things Look like how they sound.)
i tipicaly go by armada 1 and two sizes and in armada 2 the saber is about the same size as the defiant class.
Did they ever replace the defiant class, I read somewhere that there's a new class of ship which replaced it.
Also they are seriously tanky, yet pack a punch)
Edit: there's also a dedicated carrier in beta canon that carries defiant class ships like a normal one carries fighters...
While I really like this ship it has a slightly Cardassian feel to the shape, particularly when viewed from above
I think you should look into the USS Eagle from Star Trek Phase II Episode 6 ENEMY: STARFLEET!
190 meters is the size of the saber class.
The Sabre looks more like a Cardassian ship.
A very original design. No copy and paste here.
A Light Cruiser or Fast Frigate? I've seen the Saber class classified as a Scout.
Norway clas? I would like to know more
STAR FLEET COMMAND FOR THE WIN, THE REAL ONE, NOT 3!
Would the Captain of the Saber be a full Captain or would he/she actually hold a rank of Commander as on ships of similar size in today's navy?
That's never been clear to me, I figure either lower ranks might command those, or you might just get a different rate of Captains, say, less-experienced ones.
I'm a bit new to watching your Trekyard videos (and love 'em so far; you two do a great job)... So is there a video in which you both run down your favorite Trek ships?
This is a science ship? According to Star Trek Online its an Escort while the Oberth is considered a light Science Vessel. Is this based on mission profile?
Have you ever done a show on the history and development of the cloaking device and cloaking technology in general?
ECCM is a real world term.
I must say....I think the Mk1 has better lines....but...with the design dates being about 2340's and introduced into production in the 2350's or so....it just doesn't line up with when the departure from "traditional" lines and design guidelines. But...i agree that this is not a replacement for the Oberth.
Can I request the Steamrunner Class ship? I have always liked this ship. It just looks so cool. Thanks
The best ship in the delta quadrant would be the sovereign
Bobo K-M the delta quadrant?
Did you guys go somewhere? LOL
So not only was the Nova meant to replace the oberth but, the saber was as well?
The Saber class is ideal for its role. I think that it should be part of a task force, along with Akira class ships, similar to current Naval doctrine . Spelling is irrelevant, as in who cares?
Actually ECCM is used by the military in real life...
+Peter O. Yep. The term was likely invented by a American and not not a Vulcan. In Europe it sometimes know as EPM (Electronic Protechtive Messure)
Maybe.
+Peter O. The first time it was ever used was by the Germans in WW2 to counter radio jamming, I dont know who coined the term though.
I was trying to say Obirth class ship .
But where did they park the RV??
Why not settle the controversy yourselves and find out how many decks there are and the bridge then treat it like the birthday class when you did a size comparison to that controversy. That's just an idea maybe the ship is bigger than you think .
