I was 20 years old and serving with the British army in Berlin at the time, and saw her perform live at the Metropol. I remember it like it was yesterday absolutely brilliant. 🥰
Yes! I assume it was recorded from a recent re-run; They've been doing a lot of those of 70's and 80's Music shows on German late-night TV. There's a longer clip with *two* songs (See one of my other comments) that must've been taped back in the day, judging by its lower quality :-)
@@jnnx It would be impossible to assemble together so many people with those mullets and moustaches in 2022! I had a cousin who styled herself like Toyah. M’y wife saw me watching Adam Ant last week and thought it was Johnny Depp. She’s been educated!!! The 80’s ruled!
One song of hers is stuck in my mind forever because my first proper Girlfriend used to play it loads...it's a track called "Bird In Flight"..it's a great song I'm 56 now and still like it 40 years later
Toyas hair back then was a wonder to behold, wonderful cut and colours, I always envied it, she still has nice hair to this day, it was always so bouncy,
And now Toyah's doing little videos with Robert Fripp and having fun. God, 1981, year I graduated from high school, was really into "new wave" music and such. Everything changing and so much more fun and interesting! I don't think any time will be quite like the period from 1978 to 1988 or so ever again.
Damn this takes me back... I remember being so taken by her hair colour I bleached my hair to white and dyed it the same. The amount of orange light reflected of the walls during summer was insane...
I saw her in concert about this time, I was 14 and it was a school night, me and my best friend went.....I pulled my stomach muscles from dancing too much and had to miss school the next day!!! Also had my haircut like hers when I went to college......3 different horizontal layers ...... happy days :-)
I was 15 too...just moved from NYC to Ireland Lived there for 9 yrs including a year in London... 1981 USA and UK were light years apart musically I'm glad I got to catch both waves at the same time... Toyah was AMAZING
One of those songs that has stuck in my heart for my life .... Toyah is an incredible performer with incredible energy. How wonderful she has such a brilliant partner, and I can only wish them so much love and happiness. Thank you Toyah ❤️❤️❤️
This is so good to hear now i am 57 where have the years all gone these was really great years god i miss them so much it gives me goose bumps hearing this
That's not me being negative. I just think call strengths strengths. Her strength is putting herself out there with no fear and using her natural energy to make a name for herself. Not amazingly talented in my opinion. Call a spade a spade.
I enjoyed your performance at the Barbican in York as part of BBC Sounds of the Eighties show yesterday. You were brilliant. Thank you ❤❤❤ xxx I hope to see you perform live soon in York. 😊
There was a time back in the late '70s and early '80s when I was overseas that I heard her and actually had a couple of cassettes including this song. Years later I rediscovered her during lockdown, can't believe all these years later she is still going strong and putting out great music.
If anybody has watched The Antiques Road trip you will occasionally be gifted with a presenter called Izzie Balmer and is the image of Toyah Wilcox even with a Lisp.
@@willhorting5317 I’d never heard of her either, until recently. Odd, because I’ve been a massive fan of UK synth pop since it was new. What a real treat!
I remember being a fan 79 this gel come out before her time. Seen her 79 clifton notts uni wen she got me in back stage and hugged on stage. Love this rock queen
Stunning!!! Toyah was, is, and always will be a true unique talent. Remarkable lyricist, performer and such an in your face image. The complete package needed for longevity in the business of show. Thanks for all the great songs Toyah, I, like many others will always be in your debt. Stay safe.😘
My second best Toyah song. The first is Thunder in the Mountains. I love all of Toyah's songs. They all have wonderful and catchy tunes which I enjoy all the time.
I love toyah. I've loved her since jubilee was shown on c4 in the 90s. But I liked her as a child. I used to get into trouble trying to put makeup on like her and like siouxsie sou ☺ and then when I got older I dyed my hair all the time and I'm sure it's because of seeing toyah and liking all her colours and sparkly things that aren't too girly. 😊
I get goose pimples watching this just *imagining* what it must be like to be performing with a crowd like this. You look like you are having a blast, so I can only imagine (again lol) what memories and emotions this gives you. Awesome stuff Toyah :-)
I remember this being on "4 From Toyah": a 7inch single thatplayed at 33.33rpm. The amout of DJs who played it at 45rpm was hilarious. It separated the John Peels from the Mike Reads
Phil SPALDING on bass was an excellent addition to 'Toyah the band' and to me, brought out the best in Joel.....with no disrespect to Charlie and the others but, Best Lineup......
It seems weird seeing the crowd not dancing at all??????? I've seen it a few times like I saw a video of motorhead and everyone was sat at cafe tables whilst they were rocking out on stage and the people looked like they're the incorrect ones to showcase them to if you know what I mean where: if I'd have been there at the time seeing toyah I would have had no choice but to get up and dance. I find it weird seeing the people static. I can't help it. 😊😂🤣😊 hats off to toyah because I have thought in situations like it is it difficult to perform? Without a certain feedback vibe from the audience??????
It was a heck of a sunset tonight Dave (26/09/24)… After a blustery day it just got better and better until it settled into a stunning sunset here in Catacol for our last night before we must depart until next time… Maybe see you at the port… (great choice of music again…). 👍
My dearest Toyah, in the very beginning of the eighties I was 15 going on 16 in 1981 , we both share the same birthday. Back then I was a kind of quiet submissive person, but I saw you on Topops, and instantly became inthralled by your flamboyance your many amazing makeup choices hair styles and wardrobe. Absolutely amazing, you were and still are brilliant, unique and talented, open and broad minded, a girl after my own heart. I still have 3 original albums on tape. I was never fortunate enough to ever see you perform, and now in the beginning of my autumn years, I was wondering if you still performed small gigs as well as your podcast Sunday’s with your hugely talented hubby? I would so love to see you in the raw flesh as it were, not meaning nude obviously lol kind regards Nick Mander Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire.

man i was 19 y;old when this can out. much love TOYAH my the Light shine. im 61 yrs young now . you go! girl.
Whoever did that hair job, I applaude you. The contrast with the colours is just nuts.
It's the layering of colours that makes it so good. Almost red underneath to almost yellow on the top.
Amazing hair. Her bandmate needed to shave his off though
Great bass tone ...and superbly delicious hair colour' wow
Especially since the instruments aren’t plugged in!
@@barrystanton6693 Recorded bass tone is vibrant, thick and meaty' ...sorry, forgot to state the obvious'

Damn that quality for a nearly 40 year old performance is incredible. That outfit is fantastic.
Still a good song after 40 years! Thanks Toyah!
First artist I ever saw live, Sheffield City Hall, maybe 1981/2 - still remember it now, Toyah has amazing stage presence

I love FLORENCE a lot...Now I see where she got the inspiration!!!! ALL RESPECT TO TOYAH and BAND !!

Amazing hidden gem. I can see Toyah's influence everywhere now.
I was 12 in 81..so miss those times. Very spiritual song this
I live in the States and am disappointed that I wasted sooo many years NOT hearing Toyah's music because it wasn't playing here. She's wonderful.
Did she do that song Echo Beach with another old band?
