"A man dies when people forget him!" For such a short time spent with him, Dr. Hililuk's speech will never be forgotten! All One Piece fans know this line! 😭 ❤
One aspect of the backstory I really love is that Chopper is given something from both of the doctors, one gives him the heart to care for others and the other the actual medical skills and knowledge. Hiluluk was a person of great compassion but he was a horrible doctor. Kureha is an amazing doctor but she doesn't really care about people. Obviously the actual medical knowledge is more important but I really like that the narrative treats it like both hiluluk and kureha are equally incomplete as doctors. And really highlights Chopper being the complete version of them, a doctor that cares and has the knowledge to back it up. Now for trivia: One Piece at a time: The Tony Tony part of Chopper's name is because reindeer in japanese is "Tonakai ''. and the music for Hiluluk's death is a variation of the lied Ellens dritter Gesang.
Rules to survive One Piece Rule 1: Don't make Nami angry Rule 2: Fear a One Piece backstory Edit: adding rule 3 Rule 3: Give Luffy all the food (yes ALL!!!!)
Oda actually had Chopper in mind as a crew member from the beginning (or at least a crew member who is a reindeer). So Chopper's inclusion in this arc was planned and very intentional. Oda is INCREDIBLY good at both planning AND improvisation. And it is sometimes difficult to tell which is which, partly because he's also incredibly good at weaving improvisations into his planned story as though it was always planned to be that way.
That’s what keeps it interesting And I know people think we’re dissing Oda when we talk about improvisational writing but it’s actually the opposite! The balance that he has is a huge skill, it’s just fun trying to figure out which is which by watching. Like we could go read a bunch of interviews and such, but that would spoil the analysis. It’s fun not to know the whole picture and figure out things along the way!
@BOLDcastOnePiece then I hope I didn't ruin the fun around Chopper for you! But yeah, Oda kinda suffers from what I call "... but that's too cool NOT to include" syndrome. He will often come up with an idea that he loves too much and he HAS to add it to his world, which itself is perfectly built to include pretty much everything a child-like imagination full of wonder and fun could ever want and somehow stay coherent and internally consistent. It's a major reason why a story he originally thought would last for, I think, 5 years has been able to fun for five times that length ... and only get BETTER as it goes on. The man's imagination is prolific and amazing, and the fact that it resides within someone so talented at storytelling and art is a goddamned miracle.
SPOILER Yeah, i think about characters like Miss Wednesday, who wasn't supposed to be Vivi at first, but she looked the part and he didn't have time to introduce the actual princess, so he built a story around her and Mr 8 on the spot. Sanji is a different case, where it's obvious he didn't have his full backstory in mind from the start, but he still left hints here and there for a possible future story arc, just in case he managed to write it.
adding to the idea of the backstory being more than just "sad bacstory": -it adds depth to kureha, showing she;s more than just a 'witch' and actually had a friend she loved -it builds on the thems of the arc, about what a 'disease' could be beyond a physical illness, as well as what a doctor is and what makes a doctor -it shows the moment Dalton stopped quietly disapproving of wapol and actively turned against him, finally getting the inspiration from hiriluk to stand up to Wapol -most importantly, it shows WHY chopper. Who he is as a person, what shaped him, why is he living with kureha, what makes him a viable candidate for the crew, and what motivates his dream and what his dream IS, and now we CARE about chopper beyond him beiing a cute little guy, we WANT to see him succeed now so he can live up to hiriluk's legacy and beliefs -it makes you REALLY hate Wapol and show you, without just telling you, why wapol is AWFUL
Oda does that in every backstory Some writers do that just to give you some emotional attachment to the character and that's the wrong way to do it. Demon slayer did that a lot specially with the demons just to make you feel sad and it was so stupid in my opinion What Oda does is that he introduces you to a character and you see what is his personality and how the character act, then he will give you a flashback to make you understand what shaped him to be like that He failed to do that a few times Specially with the stupid pink baby character
@@Maxpain350 What a weird nit pick, what he did with Sr Pink is literally what you described: "he introduces you to a character and you see what is his personality and how the character act, then he will give you a flashback to make you understand what shaped him to be like that"
@@Iqnacio. I said he failed a few times the Sr pink was more of a tear jerking story than it was a good story it doesn't really explain the hard-boiled thing it's just explain the outfit thing which is not interesting The story was just to make you feel bad for him and cry other than that Sr pink is a shitty character and not that interesting
@@Maxpain350 Yeah and I would agree, not every back story has landed equally well, but the example you gave is the complete opposite which is why I pointed out that it can literally be described using your explanation of what Oda usually does really well. The whole point of Sr Pinks backstory is explaining both his outfit and his hard-boiled attitude, the outfit is obvious so I won't stop on it, but his hard-boiled nature is equally explained by said story, he has this stoic and determined attitude, the "though guy" trope, because the only thing that matters to him is what he lost, he's not sentimental about anything else and thus he comes off as someone devoid of sentimentality (stoic), he doesn't care about how his groupies feel for him (cause he's determined to keep loving his late wife who gave him the happiest moments in his life) and he doesn't care about what anyone think of his appearence (cause he's determined to wear what made her wife smile). I mean, I can agree it's not the backstory with the most depth in One Piece by any means, but it fulfill it's purposes as characterization for Sr Pink. Plus, it's famously known as one of the backstories that Oda had no intention of showing in the manga yet was convinced otherwise by his editor, so no, it wasn't just written to make us feel bad for him, cause we weren't supposed to know about it in the first place, it was literally only created to shape Sr Pinks personality. I feel like you simply don't like the character, which by all means you have every right to feel that way, but It seems like your dislike for the character is overshadowing your ability to have an objective opinion on it's writing.
"When does a man die..." Is up ther but its a tight competition. "When we meet again, will you still call me a friend..." "Dreams have no end..." "No one is born to be alone..." "I justbwanted to carry you a little farther..." "What right do i have to decide if he waited..." "I couldn’t save even one..." Justice will prevail because whoever prevails is justice" "Thank you for loving me." "I still have my crew..."
Oda’s a fascinating writer since there are parts where you can definitely tell that he’s improvising on the spot but there are other times where he sets up a million different plot threads that somehow coalesce together so perfectly that you know he must’ve planned it out meticulously. It also isn’t super apparent yet since you’re still pretty early into the story but Oda is the GOAT of long form storytelling and the amount that he plans for the future just feels unreal sometimes
I don't think Oda makes up entire arcs such as Alabasta on a whim, but it definitely seems plausible that he would improvise with the way he links stuff, such as with Miss Wednesday turning out to be a princess. Most likely he had Alabasta planned but either there was no princess or he planned on her being a completely different character and then decided to change it last minute. Either way, great video, there's so much more greatness to come moving forward.
Now that we’re into alabasta, there seems to be a similar maturation of Oda’s skill (which is very interesting to witeness) as going from loguetown to Drum kingdom. Like that growth that you can see in the writing kinda happens to an even greater degree already by ep 101 where we are now I’m not saying by any means that one piece was bad before this, But alabasta so far is in a completely different ball park in terms of structure to what came before it, and both of us immediately see that maturation coming through in the story
It is, Alabasta is probably where he cemented his style. You'll notice this when the arcs start to be more like Alabasta, more intricated and ambitious (long also).
I see Carson's points about Odas writing style and I halfway agree . I do think oda takes an impromptu approach early in the story BUT to me it's clear that Oda already had the end result in mind. All that's left is for him is to make the current story shift and bend so that it reaches the conclusion he has already envisioned. That is why I fell that even though his arcs divide the overall plot into tiny mini stories, he is still able to weave them all together in order for them to all have a common end point. That is why it feels like what Lindsey said where it feels like things are "building up". Oda is a prodigy in his own right so I find it interesting to see new fans try to decipher his method. Us current fans are still just as awestruck at Oda's ability just the same 😂
Yeah and I want to be clear, neither of us think that Oda is just bumbling his way through the story with no plan or any idea of what he's doing. When we say "improvisation" we aren't insulting his intelligence. Its not even a matter of intelligence. All writing is just making stuff up after all. Some things he is clearly placing with intention of where they are going in the future, some things he is just putting something there so he can refer to it later without a full picture on how that will turn out. So theres a difference between foreshadowing something concrete, and giving yourself room to play in the story. We've never said that Oda is stupid, and we don't think that his approach to writing is worse than others, but I think people partially just don't enjoy thinking of One Piece as a made up world, to them its much more than that, so when we reduce writing decisions down for the purpose of learning from them (we are aspiring writers, ourselves and break things down to learn from them), people feel like we're not fully appreciating the work, when I think we're reaching a deeper understanding (in some cases) than some other people do when they just flat out say "ODA IS A GOD OF WRITING". Nothing is perfect, but saying that doesn't mean we're shitting on the story. And we love the story. We love watching one piece, and it really is getting better and better as time goes on, we’re starting to see the hype around it more than ever and we can tell it’s only up hill from here. We’ll take it as it comes and we can’t wait! Also I hate this narrative that has formed about Lindsay having the good opinions and that I'm just a hater. We're saying the exact same things and share the exact same thoguhts about the show, but people just give her the credit and pin everything bad on me? And they say WE'RE dumbing things down
@@BOLDcastOnePiece Hmmm, it seems like you might've mistaken this comment for someone else's because I never accused you of talking bad about Oda, nor all of the other negative implications you assumed. On the contrary, I said that I completely think that Oda IS bumbling through the story 😂and by bumbling I mean he is doing some sort of impromptu writing/experimenting at the beginning. The thing I was pointing out from your discussion is that I think that he's improvising and having fun but with an end goal in mind. I assume other people are accusing you of not enjoying the story but I appreciate how analytical and perceptive both of you are of the story and the narrative, which is why I wanted to give my opinion to further the discussion. I do admit the end portion of my comment was not as clear as I would've wanted and maybe that's why you think I was talking condescendingly or something but that's because I was about to go on a drive so I just sent the comment anyway. I guess if I were to rephrase what I said it would be that I find it interesting and awesome that new fans like yourselves are piecing the story in your own way. I enjoy the discussions yall have about Oda's writing style and other such things, and that even us older fans are still having the same discussions because we still keep getting surprised by Oda years ahead of where yall are. So it's like seeing new recruits at work from a veteran's perspective. Also the thing with Lindsey, I was just using her words to bolster my argument I never said that her opinions held any more weight than yours, Carson.
58:16 my take on this, is that Oda really started telling the story as a vehicle to let his characters act. Instead of having a bunch of conveniences because the plot requires it (say, zoro and Usopp switch during arlong park, or the Luffy vs zoro fight), the characters act like themselves and dictate where the story goes Like, recently, Oda even stated (paraphrased) "I don't know if I can go according to plan, because I can't stop the characters from going somewhere else"
Well ODA was in elementary level when writing the east blue saga. The Alabasta saga is when he rapidly improved his writing. After that he just impressed readers 98% of the time.
@@carlosp5117 Well 2% are for moments like Kinemon surviving Kaido stabbing him and his lower half is farting + moving. There are such WTF moments which don't gel well with the rest of the story.
I love how you get to see Goda's greatness little by little. And it will just keep getting better. And right now, in the manga we 're living it... Also Hiriluks speech about when someone dies plays a lot in one of the main themes of One Piece (inherited will, this is not a spoiler, first time we hear about it is in Rogers speech before he gets executed)
The best part about One Piece which makes me look upto Oda is that… whenever the story peaks.. its not just great in the territory of a shonen manga or an anime… its genuinely great in territory of fiction on whole.
If only the anime could make it with a better pacing, more people will love one piece 🥲 Too bad they didn't. Some fans even hate certain arcs and told people to skip it
Chopper was in Oda's drafts before he started writing OP so he had him in mind from waaay before. I know it's surprising, but Oda had most of the things in his mind in advance. I'd argue Arlong Park and even Baratie are first arcs where Oda already kinda bloomed and hit the emotional beats.
I would say that Oda also wrote Sanji's backstory incredibly well. It was very elegant how he transported so much meaning and so much of Sanji's inner working through such a small and seemingly simple backstory.
Oda's foreshadowing is GOD TIER. There is a foreshadowing that has already been casually thrown out last arc that doesn't come to fruition until episode 764. It's a tiny, casual thing, but oh my GOSH when I got to the reveal, my jaw hit the floor because I immediately remembered the tiny mentions of this big secret.
The quality of the writing builds upon the accumulating lore. The first few arcs are mainly a setup for the main crew and the world's sensibilities. It was also Oda just finding his groove as he wrote the series. The introduction of an editor probably helped him grow, and after all the experience as a pro, he got so much better. You'll see more and more of this kind of amazing writing as the series progresses. Arabasta is my favorite saga still, but the sheer size of the world comes to force the bigger it gets. Basically, the more story Oda tells, the better the story gets.
I can't wait to see your reactions to future arcs, oda is really impressive. There's many more very serious situations going on in this world. Oda is impressive in every way with this story. Great arc.
Glad you guys already noticed the improvision is so good that you think he planned all of these from the beginning. Some of the best One Piece storylines are improvised.
Exactly! It’s praise to notice it because making those moments work on an emotional level is where a writer can show their true skill. Anyone can make an outline, the execution is where it counts
You haven’t seen Oda’s good writing yet bc you’re blind. East Blue Saga is an incredibly well written prologue. Not only does it a good job introducing and establishing the world via recurring characters, geographic basics, history, existance of different humanoid races etc while of course also introducing the main characters and main goal/plot; it also has a very clear literary structure. Each arc makes one of the story’s core foundations its subject. “Wealth, Fame, Power” - the man who obtained everything (meaning the One Piece). That’s how Roger is introduced. The first arc introduces Morgan - who represents those three things in a literal sense. Wealth through tributes, fame through fear and power through oppression - posing the question what “Wealth, Fame and Power” actually means. The second arc poses the question what “treasure” is. For Buggy, it’s gold, jewels and literal treasure. For the dog it’s the pet food store. For the Mayor it’s the town. And for Luffy, it’s his hat. The third arc is about what it means to be a crew. It’s the first time we see the crew actually work together. We also get introduced to “Captain” Usopp and see him both found and disband the Usopp Pirates. And we have Kuro, the former captain, who abandoned his crew. The fourth arc is about the thrill and joy of adventure. The fifth arc is about Dreams and the ambition to follow them. You have Zoro who says he was prepared to die the second he decided to strive to be the world’s strongest and who actually does walk straight into death and on the otherhand you have Sanji, who’s willing to put his dream aside and even shouts at Zoro that “he should just give up on his dream and that it should be easy” as Zoro falls into the sea after losing to Mihawk. The fight between Luffy and Krieg is also one of pure determination. It’s the fight where Luffy completely stops giving a fuck: running into piercing bullets, punching the spiked cape etc. Same goes for Krieg: he just keeps pulling out one weapon after another and never stops: he even got up again after being defeated by luffy and started rapaging again, screaming how he was refusing to lose and was then stopped by Gin. The sixth arc is about freedom. The seventh arc is about Fate (Luffy getting lucky on the execution platform and then getting saved from Smoker by Dragon) Wealth/Fame/Power (aka the One Piece), Tresure, Nakama, Adventure, Dreams, Freedom and Fate. The seven foundations of One Piece, all well portrayed and established while writing a coherent and engaging story that also does all the other things necessary in a prologue as afore mentioned. The entire story from thereon is clearly built on those foundations. The Alabasta Saga is cleary built on those introduced in Orange Town Arc and Baratie Arc. And it's a fair assumption to make that the following Sagas will be based on the other East Blue Saga Arcs. Go figure: good literature actually has good literary structure. Maybe read more good literature to get even a basic grasp of what good writing looks like instead of going off of garbage and being clueless because of it. You can't build a house in shifting sand. Every well and coherently written long story has a strong prologue.
Little fun fact: Chopper wasn't supposed to have his "cute" form but the editors preassured Oda to make it so they could sell merch and stuff. Oda complied and he was bitter about it for a time but I believe he's ok with it now.
This is a really hard hitting backstory for Chopper... You really end up respecting Dr. Hiriluk, even if he was a quack. Also also, not sure if anyone mentioned this or not, but all reindeer have antlers, even if they're female. I think it's the only deer that has females with antlers, too. They also fall off during a season, but at different points. Males lose their antlers during late fall and they only start to regrow during spring, while female reindeer keep their antlers throughout the winter until spring, when they give birth to their calves.
Oda can really add things in spontaneously as well as preplanning ( which he has confirmed to do) . He had spent a large portion of his childhood storyboard and preplanning the story. He always knew the big points of the story. Im going to assume he had at least the crew members fully planned out ( or at least a large portion). But he also does a lot of improvising, so i can totally believe that the micro level connections came to him as he was writing. He even tried to experiment with writing style with whole arcs.
You are not wrong. This is how Oda works. But even with all the retcons and contradictions, eventually, common themes and intentions start to emerge and draw a bigger picture. This is a case where the total is more than the sum of its parts
Think about this. One piece has been going 26 years and throughout that time Oda has only taken 2 month long breaks. If he had released a chapter every week for those 26 years thered be 1356 total chapters. Today the current chapter is 1103. Over that whole time only 256 weeks have had no new chapter. Still being on such a consistent weekly schedule Oda manages to write more and more intricate narratives. Thats why we call him Goda.
Chopper was planned. Oda shared the original sketch of Straw Hat Pirates crew, and we can see a human reindeer is there with Luffy and the gang. But this reindeer smoking cig and have black and white striped on his whole body like a zebra.
Regarding the foreshadowing, you guys have witnessed things we still don't know their answers. The only difference between us & you is that you guys don't even know that the foreshadowing already happened.
And even this one isn't the saddest. Everytime you think you found the saddest backstory ever, Oda will sooner or later give you one that tops the others. The saddest imo so far is actually in the current arc
I love the theme in this arc where there’s a sickness people suffer from that isn’t physical, and not very noticeable. And how certain things can lead to the cure for that “sickness”.
Completely agreed with all that you said at the end. Oda really does evolve with time, as he is constantly throwing out new plot points to try out new things without a clear plan, and the improvs on it to make it all fit in so seamlessly it would never seem like it was improv. And this is especially impressive considering he didn't take a single break, he releases chapter after chapter for a literal decade on until about 500 ish episodes (where he finally went to his own honeymoon). And it's not even like books where you make the whole thing, and then you have an opportunity to go back and reedit parts at the beginning to make it fit better to the latter parts of the story, because once a chapter is out, it is done, it is considered canon. We see so many other series often retconning so many things in the beginning, such as pretty much all the other Shonen i can think of from that time period. So being able to create such a long story without an Undo button for more than 2 decades straight, and still reaching new heights, Oda is truly the GOAT.
Based on your discussion, you might be surprised to hear that Oda always knew he wanted to add Chopper to the crew. Look up the early sketches of the characters he created before he the One Piece we know started being written. You'll see a reindeer guy among the crowd. (However, that one was a swordman and considerably less cute!)
"When do you think a person dies? A men dies when people forget him..." (人はいつ死ぬと思う・・・?・・・人に 忘れられた時さ・・・!!!) "Even if the researches on medecine continues...theres no medecine that can cure fools!" 「いつまで薬の研究を続けようとも...バカに付ける薬はないのだから!!!!」 One of the most popular quotes of One Piece UwU
The mangakas have plans for the arcs they going to write or even the saga if we are talking about one piece, No one can make it weekly For example in Nami case he planted the seed when we met her in orange town. ( in the manga we didn't see Nami before orange town and she said she likes tangerines and money in her first introduction) So it was planned from the beginning He always has the basic lines in his mind You just don't feel it because one piece is so goofy he even throws gags in the most serious moments One piece would be so dark if it wasn't like that and he needs that light in his manga
I feel like its important to keep in mind that oda writers from week to week. He drops a chapter almost every week with some break weeks and he has done so for 25 years at this point. The next arc is widely considered to be one of the best in one piece and after that it doesnt really slow down anymore and keeps getting better except for maybe one or two arcs but even those are good. To be fair not everything oda does is perfect but he does improve every arc. Im caught up with the manga and anime and i have to say where we currently are in one piece is the very best it has ever been. Not many writers can pull that off after 25 years.
10:37 There's something there on that book...Maybe some buddhist characters... Chopper Trivia (Source: One Piece Wiki): «According to Oda, if One Piece was set in the real world, then Chopper would be from Canada.» «Chopper has his own jolly roger, as the other members of the crew do, which is a regular Jolly Roger surrounded by sakura that also look like deer hooves. It was the one used by his adoptive father Hiriluk and eventually the Sakura Kingdom as well, which makes him the only Straw Hat whose personal jolly roger was first used by someone else. This one is commonly used in merchandise purposes such as key chains. » «Chopper hides a drawn picture of Dr. Hiriluk's pirate flag under his hat.» «Chopper is possibly based off of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as Chopper not only is a reindeer, but one with an unusually colored nose that caused his family to shun him. Chopper's birthday is also on Christmas Eve. A song entitled "Chopper the Blue-Nosed Reindeer" has also been produced for the character and was sung by the Japanese voice acting cast at Jump Festa 2007, and once again during the 2008 Festa. In the beginning of the Drum Island Arc, when a character was describing how Dr. Kureha would come down from the top of the mountain, a silhouette of Chopper in his original reindeer form was pulling her down on a sled in the sky, greatly resembling that of Santa Claus. Dr. Hiriluk would also sometimes enter people's houses from the chimney.» «Throughout the series, Chopper has often questioned or has been questioned as to what he is (man, reindeer, tanuki, gorilla, monster, etc). Chopper's animal resemblance is a reindeer. However, in Chapter 651 when all the Straw Hat Pirates were represented as animals, Chopper was shown as a red panda.» «Chopper's Monster Point form strongly resembles the Wendigo, a man-eating monster from Algonquin folklore. Depending on the portrayal, they are towering creatures covered in hair with a large mouth and antlers, that always appear gaunt and emaciated no matter how much they gorge themselves. They are strongly associated with winter and coldness, and even their heart is made of ice in some cases.» «Chopper is the first non-human Devil Fruit eater shown but not the last.» «In One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, Chopper is immune to being petrified by Boa Hancock's Mero Mero no Mi powers, which is a reference to his lack of interest or attraction to human females. Chopper himself will even remark on the Mero Mero no Mi having no effect on him if he defeats Hancock in battle. According to Oda, Chopper has not gained a sexual interest in human women after the consumption of the Hito Hito no Mi, despite his other human traits.» «Chopper is the youngest member of the Straw Hat Pirates, with the age of 15 upon joining.» «Other than naps, Chopper typically sleeps at 9:00 P.M. and wakes up at 7:00 A.M. Out of all the Straw Hat Pirates, he goes to sleep the earliest.» «In SBS 97, Oda showed Chopper's possible appearances at ages 40 and 60 in two separate timelines.»
Love the end discussion about writing There are interviews later in serialisation where you can get insight into the creative process And a question corner at the end of every volume Your analysis of his improv to light bulb writing aswell as noticing how his writings is growing or "blooming" Is incredibly thematic and profound , you will see if you do read this comment. The significance of symbols and blooms by the end of drum island. Oda is overhyped in some respects. However the praise he receives as a one of a kind visionary creative is well deserved You are peering into the soul of a genius writer when you analyse like. This and you will only become more impressed the more you re watch and unpack Keep it up Appreciate the interpretations
ODA AINT EVER OVER HYPED!!! WHAT YOU TALKIN' 'BOUT?!?! We need to hype Master Goda even more to more people! I also need him to write a "how to write" book. He is a master in so many story telling techniques.
Oda always write like this. But in east blue, you guys know the answer, so you feel bored by anything similar, but also think it is filler if anything becomes different. And you guys are just too confident to even realize that. That's also why you guys like logue town, because it is the first new arc. And please don't judge oda too quick anymore.
To me, Oda has shown his great writing since East Blue. So for me it's a bit odd you saying you didn't see it yet. I have the impression (and I'm not saying that this is the case for you guys) that a lot of people can identify good writing by seeing very elaborated plots, complex twists or super heavy dialogs. I think Oda is an outstanding writer, and it's because of how he writes characters and build his world. The stories may get more complicated, it can get darker and emotional moments, complex politics and such, but the way Oda writes his characters and his themes are superb since day 1. To fully appreciate how good he is, the audience needs to look deeper. He is king of nuance and subtile emotions. It's very easy to think Luffy is just a free spirited, funny and brave dumb dumb, but if he was limited to this surface traits, the story was never get this far. (I'm talking to you Live Action, cof cof). And when you compare his characters with other shounen mangas... You can really feel a difference. I never saw a female character so well written like Nami in any other shounen. I think that's part of the appeal of one piece and why the fans sees Oda with so much regard.
So glad to see Carson beginning to appreciate the writing 😊 The thing with One Piece is, it's a fun ride from the get-go, but it takes a while to reach the points where you see the intentionality behind its writing, the moments when the puzzle pieces line up and you look back over everything you've watched and see the guiding hand that has woven such a wonderful tapestry of a story. So especially if you've been burnt by other shows before, it's hard to just believe internet strangers when they say "nah, trust me, the writing is amazing and not just a random collection of fun adventures". You'll get there eventually, but this is a good small-scale example of it :3
Trivia Time (Source: One Piece Wiki): «Hiriluk's birthday, January 12th, comes from word "Doctor" (医者, Ishya?), a reference to his occupation, since 1-4-8 can be derived from i-sh-ya.» «The shape of Hiriluk's head is modeled after a medical cross.» «Hiriluk's name comes from the German word "Chirurg", meaning "surgeon" or literally "one working with his hands".» «In the anime, during the sequence when Hiriluk commits suicide, a musical chorus of Ellens dritter Gesang is played as he confronts Wapol and his entourage.» «Hiriluk's last words are similar to the lines from George Eliot's "Adam Bede": "Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them: they can be injured by us, they can be wounded; they know all our penitence, all our aching sense that their place is empty, all the kisses we bestow on the smallest relic of their presence.", and from Irvin D. Yalom's "Love's Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy": "Some day soon, perhaps in forty years, there will be no one alive who has ever known me. That's when I will be truly dead - when I exist in no one's memory."» «At 141 years old, Kureha is the oldest known human in the series so far.» «Kureha has her own distinct laugh; she starts her laughs with "Hee" (i.e. Heeheeheehee!), reinforcing her similarity to a witch. However, in the anime, her laugh sounds exactly like the eerie laughter of Kitaro from the 2008 horror remake of the classic anime "Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro" called "Hakaba Kitaro". Masako Nozawa voices both Dr. Kureha and Kitaro as well as Kitaro from the 1968 and 1971 versions of the "Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro" anime.» «Hiruluk shares several similarities with Doc Q: They bear a physical resemblance with their hair color and facial shape. They both show expertise in chemistry, specifically compounds that clash with the human body's workings to make it explode. They both first appeared in flashbacks set in Drum Kingdom. They are both criminals, one a pirate and the other a thief.» «Despite the fact Hiriluk directly stated he was born on Drum Island in the series, his vivre card initially said he was born in West Blue (he's only confirmed to have been there at some point in the past), before being corrected online later.» «Jamie Lee Curtis has commented her interest in playing Kureha in the One Piece (Live-Action Series) for Netflix.»
Crews doctor is and was chopper from the very beginning even before writing one piece Choppers first character look or concept art was a reindeer from the start
I originally thought it was goofy that all the reindeer had antlers, until I looked it up and learned that female reindeer have antlers too! One Piece teaching me biology
Love the analysis. What I will say though is as a multi time rewatcher, we are seeing foreshadowing that first timers aren’t. Everything seems well planned out. I remember in my first watch how chaotic it felt but on a look back, it’s a stylistic choice to tell a well planned out story in a chaotic and comedic way.
I liked one piece, but it was this backstory that hooked me. Dr hiluluk , chopper and doctorine had such good interactions. And rewatching with you remember how much a guy Dalton is!
At some point you guys will realize that Oda sensei always plans ahead. Something that feels like a coincidence, often was intentional from the start 😊
God. No matter how many times I watch these episodes and no matter how many times I watch a reaction to it… I will ball my eyes out. Thank you guys for the great content!
Choppers name is a play on the Japanese word for reindeer (tonakai) which sounds a bit like the English name for "Tony" and when they call him Tony-Kun it basically sounds like reindeer.
I have no idea where Carson got from that Kureha used to be a pirate. As far as I remember she definetly isn't and hasn't been, but she is one of the best doctors in the world and is incredibly knowledgable. And yes Chopper was planned, not in this cute form in the first place, but a reindeer character with human characteristics.
This is the first episode I cried to in One Piece. After Rewatching it for the 50+ times through reactors, I still cry so much. Chopper's backstory is heart breaking.
Small detail that I think can be pointed out as a pattern at this point I think: Roger, Bellemere and Hiruluk all died with a smile on their face. I will not say what theme they all have in common but is something that can be looked for when a character dies. And Hiruluk wasn't killed. When Wapol says that the idiot blew himself up he means it. Whatever sake Hiruluk drank made him blow up so that Choppers mushroom was not the thing that killed him.
I'm Japanese. The reason why Dr.Hiruruku got naked is that he wanted to show there is no harm with him and he doesn't hide anything dangerous. And we call reindeer “Tonakai”, so Dr.Hiruruku named him Tony. It sounds a little cuter than tonakai, right? It's like calling Bobby Bob.
By the way, guys, do remember that Chopper is the first backstory of this much importance explored since Nami. There was literally nothing of this magnitude between Arlong Park and here. And that's because back in the day, manga and anime weren't going from one big thing to another in rapid succession pace. There was a lot more cooldown and buildup. I remember in Naruto you notice there are a lot of chapters between the moments where the storytelling peaks. It's just how older manga are.
Tony Tony derives from the Japanese Word for 'Reindeer' (Tonakai) and the Mythical Shape-shifting Raccoon Dog (Tanuki) that Chopper is commonly mistaken for by many characters.
i dont know why there are way more sadder backstorys which you guys will get to know but man i watches one piece so many times and this is the only scene that makes me tear up a little (hirluks death). I am not a big crying person when watching anime or movies but this one specific scene somehow always gets very deep to me and i tear up a tiny bit its actually crazy the music paired with the things said by hirluk and dalton really are something else man
I’m just gonna say that by the end of this adventure you’ll see that even though some things where not planned he definitely had the idea to do them since the beginning of his story
A masterpiece arc full of symbolism and strong contrasts. Living by fighting, pirate spirit, determined to break the impossible translated to his own version of philosophy as fighting life as a doctor. Cross symbols not death but determination of die fighting and kind heart. Heartless king, and kind-hearted thief. A change of heart, heart disease and sakura with shape of heart. The man in his last words is not him but this country. Long-living doctor with actual knowledge rips. Short-lived quack without any devotes. Both capable of performing miracles. But not making light of neither sides, the story goes to let Chopper inherit both, to make one's will even stronger, the younger will have no limit. And many others in this arc that are yet to be revealed and intertwined with the whole story. This much of intentionality and well-written parallels still amaze me throughout several years of re-readings.
Yio i had to pause the video and go to the bathroom to take some tissue 🤧 Each time i rewatch it, i cry more then the last time, i thinkk it is because i pick new stuffs that i didn't get before.

Thats why Gol D Roger lives forever. XD
i genuinely appreciate that you put all 3 episodes in one reaction. i think i might've died from a cliffhanger that severe
Lol same 😂
One aspect of the backstory I really love is that Chopper is given something from both of the doctors, one gives him the heart to care for others and the other the actual medical skills and knowledge.
Now for trivia:
One Piece at a time:
The Tony Tony part of Chopper's name is because reindeer in japanese is "Tonakai ''.
and the music for Hiluluk's death is a variation of the lied Ellens dritter Gesang.
Yeah, Doctorine and Hiriluk are basically Chopper's parents, and he fortunately inherited only the good halves of each of them.
Wait I thought the music was Ave Maria

@nathandaniels20uhm okay? Good for you, I guess?
Oda actually had Chopper in mind as a crew member from the beginning (or at least a crew member who is a reindeer). So Chopper's inclusion in this arc was planned and very intentional.
Oda is INCREDIBLY good at both planning AND improvisation. And it is sometimes difficult to tell which is which, partly because he's also incredibly good at weaving improvisations into his planned story as though it was always planned to be that way.
Ye
That’s what keeps it interesting
And I know people think we’re dissing Oda when we talk about improvisational writing but it’s actually the opposite!
SPOILER
Yeah, i think about characters like Miss Wednesday, who wasn't supposed to be Vivi at first, but she looked the part and he didn't have time to introduce the actual princess, so he built a story around her and Mr 8 on the spot. Sanji is a different case, where it's obvious he didn't have his full backstory in mind from the start, but he still left hints here and there for a possible future story arc, just in case he managed to write it.
@@bluelight17have you read somewhere Oda didn't have Sanji's backstory in mind? Because very early on there is a hint about who he is.

Probably one of the best lines in anime history for me. "When do you think a person dies...?"

The inhereted will theme grows stronger
adding to the idea of the backstory being more than just "sad bacstory":
-it adds depth to kureha, showing she;s more than just a 'witch' and actually had a friend she loved
-it builds on the thems of the arc, about what a 'disease' could be beyond a physical illness, as well as what a doctor is and what makes a doctor
-it shows the moment Dalton stopped quietly disapproving of wapol and actively turned against him, finally getting the inspiration from hiriluk to stand up to Wapol
-most importantly, it shows WHY chopper. Who he is as a person, what shaped him, why is he living with kureha, what makes him a viable candidate for the crew, and what motivates his dream and what his dream IS, and now we CARE about chopper beyond him beiing a cute little guy, we WANT to see him succeed now so he can live up to hiriluk's legacy and beliefs
-it makes you REALLY hate Wapol and show you, without just telling you, why wapol is AWFUL
Oda does that in every backstory
Some writers do that just to give you some emotional attachment to the character and that's the wrong way to do it. Demon slayer did that a lot specially with the demons just to make you feel sad and it was so stupid in my opinion
What Oda does is that he introduces you to a character and you see what is his personality and how the character act, then he will give you a flashback to make you understand what shaped him to be like that
He failed to do that a few times
Specially with the stupid pink baby character
@@Maxpain350 What a weird nit pick, what he did with Sr Pink is literally what you described: "he introduces you to a character and you see what is his personality and how the character act, then he will give you a flashback to make you understand what shaped him to be like that"
@@Iqnacio. I said he failed a few times the Sr pink was more of a tear jerking story than it was a good story it doesn't really explain the hard-boiled thing it's just explain the outfit thing which is not interesting
The story was just to make you feel bad for him and cry other than that Sr pink is a shitty character and not that interesting

Like that growth that you can see in the writing kinda happens to an even greater degree already by ep 101 where we are now
I’m not saying by any means that one piece was bad before this,
But alabasta so far is in a completely different ball park in terms of structure to what came before it, and both of us immediately see that maturation coming through in the story
Oh yeah I wasn’t trying to argue or take issue with what you were saying. Just clarifying our own perspective, sorry if it came off accusatory
58:16 my take on this, is that Oda really started telling the story as a vehicle to let his characters act. Instead of having a bunch of conveniences because the plot requires it (say, zoro and Usopp switch during arlong park, or the Luffy vs zoro fight), the characters act like themselves and dictate where the story goes
Like, recently, Oda even stated (paraphrased) "I don't know if I can go according to plan, because I can't stop the characters from going somewhere else"
That's a bad paraphrasing of what he said 😂
@@bermudav3348 well, it's the gist of it :p
Oda is very good in world building, maybe you don't trust him yet but eventually you'll recognize his talent

It's also the word that kamikaze-pilots wrote in their wills, and it's a belief that has been handed down since ancient times in Japan.
Enter Tony Tony Chopper! Voiced by the iconic Ikue Otani who also voices Pikachu. The greatest doctor of them all!
The best part about One Piece which makes me look upto Oda is that… whenever the story peaks.. its not just great in the territory of a shonen manga or an anime… its genuinely great in territory of fiction on whole.
Sometimes the arcs seem to drag on a bit but the ending of arcs always work out so well and will most likely have you in tears

Great arc.

Omg three episodes? On my favorite arc? I'm so happy!
The seventh arc is about Fate (Luffy getting lucky on the execution platform and then getting saved from Smoker by Dragon)
Wealth/Fame/Power (aka the One Piece), Tresure, Nakama, Adventure, Dreams, Freedom and Fate.

28:42 NO ONE ESCAPES THE ONE PIECE TEARS
Oda can really add things in spontaneously as well as preplanning ( which he has confirmed to do) . He had spent a large portion of his childhood storyboard and preplanning the story. He always knew the big points of the story. Im going to assume he had at least the crew members fully planned out ( or at least a large portion).
But he also does a lot of improvising, so i can totally believe that the micro level connections came to him as he was writing. He even tried to experiment with writing style with whole arcs.
Chopper's backstory was my turning point to finally hooked into this series! Just wait until how they wrapped up this arc guys 😭
You are not wrong. This is how Oda works. But even with all the retcons and contradictions, eventually, common themes and intentions start to emerge and draw a bigger picture. This is a case where the total is more than the sum of its parts
Contra?
24:12 it's Tony Tony because reindeer in Japanese is Tonakai.

Choppers back story is not even the saddest back story in one piece it gets so much better
This is literally nothing 😂
There will be some even more sad
That line at 43:18 really hits when I think about a certain character's backstory
A men dies when people forget him..."
(人はいつ死ぬと思う・・・?・・・人に 忘れられた時さ・・・!!!)
"Even if the researches on medecine continues...theres no medecine that can cure fools!"
「いつまで薬の研究を続けようとも...バカに付ける薬はないのだから!!!!」
One of the most popular quotes of One Piece UwU
The mangakas have plans for the arcs they going to write or even the saga if we are talking about one piece,
No one can make it weekly
For example in Nami case he planted the seed when we met her in orange town. ( in the manga we didn't see Nami before orange town and she said she likes tangerines and money in her first introduction)
So it was planned from the beginning
He always has the basic lines in his mind
You just don't feel it because one piece is so goofy he even throws gags in the most serious moments
One piece would be so dark if it wasn't like that and he needs that light in his manga
Ye
Excatly
I feel like its important to keep in mind that oda writers from week to week. He drops a chapter almost every week with some break weeks and he has done so for 25 years at this point. The next arc is widely considered to be one of the best in one piece and after that it doesnt really slow down anymore and keeps getting better except for maybe one or two arcs but even those are good. To be fair not everything oda does is perfect but he does improve every arc. Im caught up with the manga and anime and i have to say where we currently are in one piece is the very best it has ever been. Not many writers can pull that off after 25 years.
Chopper story is the 1st time anime that made me cries
10:37 There's something there on that book...Maybe some buddhist characters...
Chopper Trivia (Source: One Piece Wiki):
«According to Oda, if One Piece was set in the real world, then Chopper would be from Canada.»
«Chopper has his own jolly roger, as the other members of the crew do, which is a regular Jolly Roger surrounded by sakura that also look like deer hooves. It was the one used by his adoptive father Hiriluk and eventually the Sakura Kingdom as well, which makes him the only Straw Hat whose personal jolly roger was first used by someone else. This one is commonly used in merchandise purposes such as key chains. »
«Chopper hides a drawn picture of Dr. Hiriluk's pirate flag under his hat.»
«Chopper is possibly based off of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as Chopper not only is a reindeer, but one with an unusually colored nose that caused his family to shun him. Dr. Hiriluk would also sometimes enter people's houses from the chimney.»
«Throughout the series, Chopper has often questioned or has been questioned as to what he is (man, reindeer, tanuki, gorilla, monster, etc). Chopper's animal resemblance is a reindeer. However, in Chapter 651 when all the Straw Hat Pirates were represented as animals, Chopper was shown as a red panda.»
«Chopper's Monster Point form strongly resembles the Wendigo, a man-eating monster from Algonquin folklore. Depending on the portrayal, they are towering creatures covered in hair with a large mouth and antlers, that always appear gaunt and emaciated no matter how much they gorge themselves. They are strongly associated with winter and coldness, and even their heart is made of ice in some cases.»
«Chopper is the first non-human Devil Fruit eater shown but not the last.»
«In One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, Chopper is immune to being petrified by Boa Hancock's Mero Mero no Mi powers, which is a reference to his lack of interest or attraction to human females. Chopper himself will even remark on the Mero Mero no Mi having no effect on him if he defeats Hancock in battle. According to Oda, Chopper has not gained a sexual interest in human women after the consumption of the Hito Hito no Mi, despite his other human traits.»
«Chopper is the youngest member of the Straw Hat Pirates, with the age of 15 upon joining.»
«Other than naps, Chopper typically sleeps at 9:00 P.M. and wakes up at 7:00 A.M. Out of all the Straw Hat Pirates, he goes to sleep the earliest.»
«In SBS 97, Oda showed Chopper's possible appearances at ages 40 and 60 in two separate timelines.»
They really are not ready for alabasta. You're gonna love Vivi so much
Thank you for the 3 episodes 💖💖💖
Edit: love your discussions guys! I'm so excited for you to react future arcs 💕✨
Love the end discussion about writing
There are interviews later in serialisation where you can get insight into the creative process
And a question corner at the end of every volume
Your analysis of his improv to light bulb writing aswell as noticing how his writings is growing or "blooming"
Is incredibly thematic and profound , you will see if you do read this comment. The significance of symbols and blooms by the end of drum island.
Oda is overhyped in some respects. However the praise he receives as a one of a kind visionary creative is well deserved
You are peering into the soul of a genius writer when you analyse like. This and you will only become more impressed the more you re watch and unpack
Keep it up
Appreciate the interpretations
ODA AINT EVER OVER HYPED!!! WHAT YOU TALKIN' 'BOUT?!?!
We need to hype Master Goda even more to more people!
I also need him to write a "how to write" book. He is a master in so many story telling techniques.
@depressedtv spit
He has introduced good writing at this point, but he leaves hints and bits here and there which you'll look back and understand
Nah facts put sone fucking respect on oda name carson... Helmeppo lookin ahh 😂
So glad to see Carson beginning to appreciate the writing 😊
The thing with One Piece is, it's a fun ride from the get-go, but it takes a while to reach the points where you see the intentionality behind its writing, the moments when the puzzle pieces line up and you look back over everything you've watched and see the guiding hand that has woven such a wonderful tapestry of a story.
So especially if you've been burnt by other shows before, it's hard to just believe internet strangers when they say "nah, trust me, the writing is amazing and not just a random collection of fun adventures". You'll get there eventually, but this is a good small-scale example of it :3
Trivia Time (Source: One Piece Wiki):
«Hiriluk's birthday, January 12th, comes from word "Doctor" (医者, Ishya?), a reference to his occupation, since 1-4-8 can be derived from i-sh-ya.»
«The shape of Hiriluk's head is modeled after a medical cross.»
«Hiriluk's name comes from the German word "Chirurg", meaning "surgeon" or literally "one working with his hands".»
«In the anime, during the sequence when Hiriluk commits suicide, a musical chorus of Ellens dritter Gesang is played as he confronts Wapol and his entourage.»
«Hiriluk's last words are similar to the lines from George Eliot's "Adam Bede": "Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them: they can be injured by us, they can be wounded; they know all our penitence, all our aching sense that their place is empty, all the kisses we bestow on the smallest relic of their presence.", and from Irvin D. Yalom's "Love's Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy": "Some day soon, perhaps in forty years, there will be no one alive who has ever known me. That's when I will be truly dead - when I exist in no one's memory."»
«At 141 years old, Kureha is the oldest known human in the series so far.»
«Kureha has her own distinct laugh; she starts her laughs with "Hee" (i.e. Kureha and Kitaro as well as Kitaro from the 1968 and 1971 versions of the "Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro" anime.»
«Hiruluk shares several similarities with Doc Q:
They bear a physical resemblance with their hair color and facial shape.
They both show expertise in chemistry, specifically compounds that clash with the human body's workings to make it explode.
They both first appeared in flashbacks set in Drum Kingdom.
They are both criminals, one a pirate and the other a thief.»
«Despite the fact Hiriluk directly stated he was born on Drum Island in the series, his vivre card initially said he was born in West Blue (he's only confirmed to have been there at some point in the past), before being corrected online later.»
«Jamie Lee Curtis has commented her interest in playing Kureha in the One Piece (Live-Action Series) for Netflix.»
Crews doctor is and was chopper from the very beginning even before writing one piece
Choppers first character look or concept art was a reindeer from the start
Exctly
I originally thought it was goofy that all the reindeer had antlers, until I looked it up and learned that female reindeer have antlers too! One Piece teaching me biology
You guys just entered the golden territory.. It keeps getting better the next few arcs!!
My favorite background of all One Piece, always touch my heart in a deep way
This episode always always makes me cry and it's like 20+ times that I'm watching it
Luffy and Kureha is such a funny meta interaction because they are Krillin and Goku.
She is like a pirate
She's got that pirate spirit about her
@@CheddahSlammer Sure, but that doesn't mean she is a pirate. But fair I see how he could have misunderstood that.
Sad back story, connecting, foreshadowing. Oda: "Hold my beer"
This is the first episode I cried to in One Piece. After Rewatching it for the 50+ times through reactors, I still cry so much. Chopper's backstory is heart breaking.
Small detail that I think can be pointed out as a pattern at this point I think:
Roger, Bellemere and Hiruluk all died with a smile on their face.
Oh Lindsay is gonna have a blast with the anime. So many tears to come
Some fun useless information for you, Choppers birthday is December 24th. A fan asked Oda to make that official, so he made it so lol.
That's just how shows r
And it works
Tony Tony derives from the Japanese Word for 'Reindeer' (Tonakai) and the Mythical Shape-shifting Raccoon Dog (Tanuki) that Chopper is commonly mistaken for by many characters.
i dont know why there are way more sadder backstorys which you guys will get to know but man i watches one piece so many times and this is the only scene that makes me tear up a little (hirluks death). I am not a big crying person when watching anime or movies but this one specific scene somehow always gets very deep to me and i tear up a tiny bit its actually crazy the music paired with the things said by hirluk and dalton really are something else man
I don't know why, but for me, I wasn't really sad about a certain brother's death, but rather I cried because of how it affected the other brother.
Oh no...the mushroom chopper photo as the thumbnail made me tear up just by seeing it
10:49 no way she knew chopper’s true purpose… emergency food 😂
Now you finally understand a little bit of odas genius. And how he controls our emotions 😁
"A man dies when he is forgotten !" -RIP you quack
Tonakai (reindeer) = Tony = Tony Tony
I’m just gonna say that by the end of this adventure you’ll see that even though some things where not planned he definitely had the idea to do them since the beginning of his story
Hiluluk scene will always bring tears to my eyes.
Ahh. I'm still crying. Everytime.
From now you will see the writing quality of oda! Enjoy❤
fun fact Choppers VA is the VA of Pikachu :D
1:58 Someone seeing this 😳😳 Oda man you are🧎💯
“Ave Maria rn?”😂😂 had me in tears
So on point about that flashback. That was really good.
