The thing is, when it comes to shooters for SNES, the ones that spring to mind are Gradius III, the Parodius games, R-Type III, Super R-Type and Thunder Spirits. Vertical shmups are less common on SNES than they were on either PC Engine or MegaDrive.
A combination of places. From most to least: my collection from childhood, local stores, trades on forums, local ads, then ebay. I avoid ebay whenever possible. Most games I've had since they were brand new from back in the day.
I agree with you and I'd ideally like to do that as well as upgrade to an HD camcorder, but I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Also, I'm on a mac - every capture card I come across is windows only. I need a Mac based solution. Do you have any suggestions?
I remember renting this one. I admit the music is kind of cool, but I got bored by the first stage background. When you mention controls: the game is supposed to have a feature in 2-player mode that lets both players combine into one jet. Not sure myself how it works. Maybe that's what X does? By smart bombs, do you mean the special weapon that has limited ammo and are gone forever after one level (or continue?)? I think in the arcade, special weapons last a full stage, but you have fewer.
IIRC, the SNES port of RAIDEN is a pretty bad port. But thanks, I hadn't heard of any of most of the games you mentioned. I want to get Caravan Shooting Collection now!
You forgot Raiden Densetsu/Trad. Caravan Shooting Collection (ports of Star Soldier, Star Force and Hector '87 for NES), D(imension)-Force, Imperium/Dion, Dezaemon He mentioned Firepower 2000, which is the US version of Super SWIV.
D-Force is painfully clear it was a first-year game. Fairly poor graphics, control. The main gimmick is that you can move between two altitudes, with ugly Mode 7 zooming on the lower level. :D Dezaemon is also by Athena. It includes a game called Daioh Gale, possibly arcade-related. The main draw is that the whole game itself can be edited through a Mario Paint-clone interface. Imperium (and its similar but different Japanese version Dion) are supposed to be decent to good.
You should get a capture card, or maybe even just use an emulator for recording game footage. The only colors that show up in these camcorder TV recordings are black, and supernova, so it's hard to see what's going on. Vertical SNES shooters? Aside from what's already been mentioned there's Raiden Trad, Imperium, D-Force, and uh... half of Axelay, if that counts.

Dude, I have fond memories of this game!
I rented this game and my friend and I played it and beat it. Boy were we thrilled! Good times, good times!
Yup, all good suggestions. I was having a total brainfart at my failure to think of any other vertical SNES shmups. Another good example is Axelay.
Particulary surprised Pop n Twinbee or Super Aleste skipped your memory, they're probably the most well known
Maybe in Europe, but Pop'n Twinbee wasnt released here. You're right though - I'm fond of that one.

Dezaemon! How could I forget!
Full list of SNES vertical shmups:
Man your starting to pump these out kinda fast
Yeah, I'm a sucker for them.
There are more vertical shooters for SNES. I recommend Space Megaforce, aka Super Aleste.
Now that I'm a partner, my goal is a video once a day.

Space Megaforce. Another pretty uncommon game.

Axelay. Another vertical shooter
Imperium
Pop 'N' Twinbee Flying Hero Cosmo Gang Acrobat Mission Strike Gunner Super Aleste / Space Megaforce Axelay Aero Fighters aka Sonic Wings Super SWIV
Where do you get your games? Is there a store you go to, or do you just go to ebay?
