Great memories of working for Iceland way back around 1971. I was the first "trainee manager" taken on by Malcolm and Peter when they opened the Ernest Street Freezer Centre in Rhyl. Malcolm asked me for ideas in order to gain some free newspaper coverage, and I suggested we make "The worlds largest Ice Lolly!!!"... they went ahead and managed to produce one...... needless to say they got their free publicity.. I appear in the video at 7:13...nice to look back...great people
Well, I've just finished watching, and I can easily say that that's the best documentary of any retail establishment I've ever seen. I'd particularly like to credit the even-handed way it covered the history of the business and paid as much attention to the things and decisions that went wrong as those that went right.

I remember my mother going shopping on the bus to Iceland's before she could drive, feeding for 4 kids means A LOT of bags, I imagine the free delivery they offered helped her out a lot.

I've known about Iceland as being a retailer for years, but came across Richard Walker when he was on QT a couple of years ago. I thought "What a lovely, honest guy". This programme has filled in the missing history that I had no idea of. He obviously inherited his philanthropy from his father. Thank you, one and all. Especially from the orangutans xxx
@Just Mingled I don't eat meat and so can't really appreciate the difference between people eating a lamb, a cow, a pig or a horse. He could equally have said he knew he was selling lamb meat and would do it ALL OVER AGAIN????
@Just Mingled I don't know the guy or work for Iceland or really care to defend any company, but when did he say that?... all I could find was him saying that his burgers have beef in them not horse, and even though they had passed UK tests the Irish tests came back with 1% trace of horse meat, to where he made a poor joke "well that's the Irish" which he apologised for. Though compared with other supermarkets that was low (Tesco had 29% horse meat in their burgers)
I've got a lot of respect for Malcolm Walker but he isn't a philanthropist! The charity stuff he does is just PR and free advertising for the Iceland brand name.
I don't live in GB anymore (now in Berlin), but I have heard nothing but praise for you from my sister Jo and family! Mum, who unfortunately passed away 18 months ago, at 96, used to absolutely love the food that sis bought for her! Wish you were here in Berlin!

Never planned to watch this through, no affiliation to Iceland at all, but frankly speaking they come across as a very well run company, also flying the sustainability flag. Hats off, impressed, surprisingly enjoyable watch.

I have not heard of Iceland. So When I go to England in 2022, I am going to find an Iceland to shop in, it intrigues me now. I like the owner Malcolm, he is such a down to earth friendly nice person.

Having watched this I feel that I have really misjudged Iceland over the years having only set foot in only one many years ago. We the people will always love and need iceland. I new when I was a young girl that b jams was the way to go. There was 2 in North London. My mum didn't think they would ever take of. She would send me to the shops and I would go b jams .it made sense to me to by bigger bags but we didn't have a freezer 😀 I was only 11 years old. Once iceland took it over and opened more and more stores there was no stopping them. Iv shopped at iceland on and of for 40 years and bought up my own kids on there quitlety food . I still shop there today. Thank you iceland. X

The way they so quickly figured out the needs of people at home and made slots available for everyone was incredible. Where the big giants failed Iceland delivered. Literally. I'll never forget that and neither will my elderly mum. Iceland is a superb company and perfectly unique, because they do what they want and for the right reasons.

I’ve always shopped at ice,and since having my kids for 25 years. I’ve been saved so many times popping into Iceland. I could always cook a balanced meal and being vegetarian I’m loving the introduction of more foods
Their attention to detail, is to be admired, no one likes to buy a bag at the till, but their chilled/ frozen bags are industry leaders, and very stylish, only Aldi refresh their designs constantly, and sometimes even they get them wrong.
Yeah and that £1 item is worth 70p the £3 item is worth 1.70 etc etc. Okay so it’s not exact but you realise it’s been rounded up on purpose. It makes you think it’s cheap.

Great documentary. Keep doing what you are doing. Love the "Branded" products like Greggs and Harry Ramsdens. It sort of gives you a seal of approval from a trusted name. That and the Iceland branded products are great too. Glad to see they care about the staff, hard working and trusted colleagues are hard to find, so keep them! Thanks to RUclips’s algorithms today, I’ve just spent nearly an hour watching a documentary about a frozen food retailer. And it was time well spent. It was Actually a superbly made, gripping piece of film making. I’ve been a customer with Iceland since I can remember, and even during the height of the pandemic last year they didn’t let anyone down. I’ll be honest, during the heat of summer last year the delivery driver got delayed and there was problem and the food defrosted. Not his fault. Within an hour I got a full refund via Facebook. Thought I’d have a difficult time getting my money back but no. Hats off. The documentary is one hell of an great advertisement for the company.

Growing up in Peterborough, I remembered the Iceland store in the outskirt of a place called Bretton, and it use to be empty and not exciting, this was the early 90s. Now I use my local one in Manchester as whilst all the big chains home delivery can take weeks, Iceland, I can literally get next day delivery. Good on you Iceland.
Wow! I used to work at Bejam…Remember them! They got taken over by Iceland in the 80s I believe, after I had done my 10 year stint with them. Working in sales taught me a lot about people and not just on the shop floor. Took my shares and froze them…
I am so pleased that Malcolm failed to get a traditional retail training scheme. Not being indoctrinated into traditional ways of doing things made him and Iceland what they are, world beaters. It's also a lesson for every business, archive the important stuff and you can tell your story when your company is 50 years old.
Some of the deals are brilliant, since lockdown in place of weekend takeout we bought Iceland meals and they’re great, my late mum always liked Iceland. I remember when Bejam disappeared and became an Iceland store.
Mom always shoped at Iceland,and when I left home to start my own family so did I and still do, great staff at our local store (Chesterfield), they got a huge amount of respect from me when covid first hit they stayed open extra late one night a week just for NHS staff, here's to the next 50 years
Iceland always do it right.... Top quality top service they are so underestimated but trust me they know how to treat customers..... And give value for your money
Best documentary I’ve ever seen . Wow I always knocked Iceland but I have found a massive respect and admiration for them . Good people running the company who care and make a profit and make it affordable at the same time outstanding. 👏 👏 I salute you. I will deliberately now buy some products every now and again and go into your stores and not have this stupid snobbery I may have shown .
Iceland used to be in my Home Town of Arbroath, Scotland. It's now a Co-OP but they did say that are interested in opening an arbroath Branch in the future, but not in the town centre, I do have memories of when I was living in Dundee, my Gran used to take me and my brother to the Wellgate Shopping Centre, we would go to The Library and Iceland, does anyone else remember the one in Arbroath?

Growing up in the 70's Iceland food was shite. Always had a cheap stigma shopping there. It looks like the quality has improved greatly, well done to the Iceland staff.
my mum always said the same growing up, i still wouldn't go near their ready made frozen meals but iceland own brand chips and roast potatoes etc are really good for a quid a bag, their shredded chicken is also not too bad but its mostly coating a little chicken. in general you cant complain for the prices, i still stick to my local butcher for meat and fish but tinned stuff and chips etc i use iceland
@@moffatttt My parents always taught me you are what you eat. I've always tried to buy good quality food, you really do wonder what your getting for the low prices, especially when it comes to meat. I have my limits though, would love to eat free range chickens at £8 each but find myself picking up the £3.50 each chicken. I'd steer clear of the ready made meals, no real need to subject yourself to that food when cooking food these days is basicly heating it up and adding a powder or liquid sauce ontop. The ethos of Iceland (70% of its product) is still cheap poor quality convenience food that appeals to the masses of below poverty line shoppers. I grew up working class on chips and sausages/fish fingers/burgers/etc, it's all we could afford. I feel for people in that same type of situation today.

The reliance on processed or fast food is killing 10's 1000's every year thro diabetes and other heart related diseases. 7% of the UK population has diabetes with a further 1 million alreafy with or pre-diabetic and don't know it. Supplements like vit D can help reduce the risk of diabetes and is so cheap now its patents have all expired, why is the government not pushing this. Giving vit D out to the poorest amongst us and working class for free ?
WOW a family company and they apparently look after their staff by rewarding them with good pay. Bless the Senior leadership team at Iceland. At least they care for their staff. I wish my firm's directors cared about our staff rather than penny pinching.

I'm 55 and when I was growing up all we had was a very small freezer box in the fridge which was never used but for ice cream. I never grew up with frozen food. It was frowned upon.

Iceland employs some of the best store assistants going.My Mrs worked in retail and she is impressed with the Iceland staff

One of the best things Iceland have done is there straight edge pricing ie. £1 £2 £2.50 etc. It gives you a sense of saving!

The delivery drivers are excellent. They can carry 8 bags at once, never complain and are always in time.
Growing up in Peterborough, I remembered the Iceland store in the outskirt of a place called Bretton, and it use to be empty and not exciting, this was the early 90s. Now I use my local one in Manchester as whilst all the big chains home delivery can take weeks, Iceland, I can literally get next day delivery. Good on you Iceland.

They got taken over by Iceland in the 80s I believe, after I had done my 10 year stint with them.
Working in sales taught me a lot about people and not just on the shop floor.
Took my shares and froze them…
I am so pleased that Malcolm failed to get a traditional retail training scheme. Not being indoctrinated into traditional ways of doing things made him and Iceland what they are, world beaters.
It's also a lesson for every business, archive the important stuff and you can tell your story when your company is 50 years old.
Some of the deals are brilliant, since lockdown in place of weekend takeout we bought Iceland meals and they’re great, my late mum always liked Iceland. I remember when Bejam disappeared and became an Iceland store.
Mom always shoped at Iceland,and when I left home to start my own family so did I and still do, great staff at our local store (Chesterfield), they got a huge amount of respect from me when covid first hit they stayed open extra late one night a week just for NHS staff, here's to the next 50 years

Best documentary I’ve ever seen . Wow I always knocked Iceland but I have found a massive respect and admiration for them . Good people running the company who care and make a profit and make it affordable at the same time outstanding. 👏 👏 I salute you. I will deliberately now buy some products every now and again and go into your stores and not have this stupid snobbery I may have shown .
Iceland used to be in my Home Town of Arbroath, Scotland. It's now a Co-OP but they did say that are interested in opening an arbroath Branch in the future, but not in the town centre, I do have memories of when I was living in Dundee, my Gran used to take me and my brother to the Wellgate Shopping Centre, we would go to The Library and Iceland, does anyone else remember the one in Arbroath?

Growing up in the 70's Iceland food was shite. Always had a cheap stigma shopping there. It looks like the quality has improved greatly, well done to the Iceland staff.
my mum always said the same growing up, i still wouldn't go near their ready made frozen meals but iceland own brand chips and roast potatoes etc are really good for a quid a bag, their shredded chicken is also not too bad but its mostly coating a little chicken. in general you cant complain for the prices, i still stick to my local butcher for meat and fish but tinned stuff and chips etc i use iceland
@@moffatttt My parents always taught me you are what you eat. I've always tried to buy good quality food, you really do wonder what your getting for the low prices, especially when it comes to meat. I have my limits though, would love to eat free range chickens at £8 each but find myself picking up the £3.50 each chicken. I'd steer clear of the ready made meals, no real need to subject yourself to that food when cooking food these days is basicly heating it up and adding a powder or liquid sauce ontop. The ethos of Iceland (70% of its product) is still cheap poor quality convenience food that appeals to the masses of below poverty line shoppers. I grew up working class on chips and sausages/fish fingers/burgers/etc, it's all we could afford. I feel for people in that same type of situation today.
@@mikeheap7978 Also people who live alone, usually elderly.When you can't walk very far,I'm talking a few yard as long as you have something hold on to. To be able to just pop something into the microwave, air oven, or ordinary oven, and have a meal is a Godsend
@@iriscollins7583 We have to be careful with our diets in the western world. The reliance on processed or fast food is killing 10's 1000's every year thro diabetes and other heart related diseases.
7% of the UK population has diabetes with a further 1 million alreafy with or pre-diabetic and don't know it.
Supplements like vit D can help reduce the risk of diabetes and is so cheap now its patents have all expired, why is the government not pushing this. Giving vit D out to the poorest amongst us and working class for free ?

I'm 55 and when I was growing up all we had was a very small freezer box in the fridge which was never used but for ice cream. I never grew up with frozen food. It was frowned upon.
Just watched the Iceland documentary really good but for me it's the value for money! In the world that we live in ! Well-done the the walker family and extended one for what you have achieved ps continued succes for the future 👍
They do have a good savings scheme when you put 20 pounds in your Iceland account they give you one pound extra that's much better than a bank
It's 5% and they are doing the double money throughout August so it's 10% 🥳🥳🥳
