- We take a look inside the historic ship that arrived on Newcastle Quayside today (26/6/24) and will be here fore two weeks - it is open to the public and your able to visit - Adult price £12.

Back in the days when ships were made of wood and the men were made of steel, there is a replica that is in Brixham in Torbay which is a replica of the Golden Hind which gives a sense of how tough life would be back then
We also used to build giant basilicas and catjedrals, star forts etc too! All before power tools were invented. Oh, and pyramids, lots of them!

As an old Brit sailor, its the hemp rope, That put's me back, in the Past of sailing, Plastic has a lot, of qualities, but in a heavy sea, hemp wont slip, to same extent plastic does,

Andalucia comes from Vandals, the German tribe that settled in the south of Spain. The first trip by Columbus to the New World took 70 days, averaging under 3 miles per hour (slow, yeah but beats walking for 70 days!).

I SURE WOULDN’T MIND DOING A TOUR OF WORK DUTY ONBOARD IT EITHER!!
I understand the reasons why there are engines but they will affect the navigation; the navigator and the captain will know that they can probably reach their destination by the appointed time, but without engines can never be sure. Also there is not so much fear of being caught on a lee shore, whereas without engines a ship with only a very poor ability to sail to windward must always try to ensure there is sufficient sea room to be able to sail out of trouble. And without engines there is always the fear of running out of provisions, or of the water turning bad, and of course scurvy!
I am full of admiration for the captains and crew of these (by modern standards) rather clumsy ships who achieved so much and changed the world we live in.
I was doing my powerboat lvl 2 licence renewal past this ship at it's berth on the Tyne, it looks very impressive from down in the water!
As towards sailing ships, it's very much less of a problem these days, what with modern AIS systems, navigation and often overlooked but most importantly...radio communication.
Now, we can radio ahead for tugboat assists, resupply or berthing management. Accurate, up-to-date weather reporting also takes a lot guesswork out of route plotting etc.
All of these magical modern conveniences do make you appreciate how it was done in the past a hell of a lot more though, so enormous respect to those hardy sailors!
You showed the Captain's and Warrant officers cabins, but not an example of the crews hammocks. One hammock doesn't illustrate the crampness of sailing in one of those ships. Is the Captains cabin behind the wheel?
Do you have a Basque Navigator with you?
Nice to see but being a bit of a purist I prefer the actual sailing ships, believe Sweden has a sails galleon replica.

We explored everywhere we were allowed - if not on the video there was no public access.
@@northeastupdates I stopped watching about a third of the way through. It looked like a museum ship to me and not an actual working sailing ship
so why did not call into Hartlepool with ower history of ship builing?
Because Newcastle is better known, far more accessible by public transport, and the obvious choice for the northeast. Plus I doubt they wanted to be dwarfed by Trincomalee 😂
