How prices have gone up in a couple of years, Browney! A Ryco RTK1 kit is now $42 and Penrite Auto-Trans Fluid is $71, up from $20 and $50 respectively.
I used to work as a mechanic at a taxi depo and we did the trans service every 30,000 kms. I think once (maybe twice) i did a service with out spilling a drop on the ground haha. A tip for reduced oil spillage is if you have a rectangle container larger then the oil pan. Have it sideways for the first bit then rotate it for when you take the pan off. It seems stupidly simple but it does catch most of it bar a few drops here and there. And a magnet handy to catch the dropped bolts .
Haha, glad to hear even pros can make a mess on this one. Thanks for sharing though, crazy they got done that often! To be honest I was going to get a larger rectangle pan as you say, but I cheaped out and went with the 'she'll be right' approach - and as we saw I was very wrong! At least the ATF cleans up off the floor ok 😂
For the avg person, you don't need to flush the fluid if the car doesn't have an issue requiring you to look at the fluid in the first place. But you can do a normal fluid service when you change your oil, and then when you change it again in Eg. 10k or every 2nd oil change, like an increased service interval till the fluid clears up to your liking. You can use an OBD scanner and check the trans temp when checking the final level. Warm = transmission temp > 50°C and box is warm to the touch but not hot, eg if you just drove it to the shop and if your engine cooling fans are on, you would wait for 2hrs but not longer than 4hrs to be in that range normally, or if the engine is cold, drive 3.5-4.5kms @ < 2500RPM.
Hi all a good tip for doing the flush is disconnect the cooler line from the radiator or external oil cooler first and fit a hose ,have somebody start the car have the hose going into a bucket or container, drain around 4 litres or when the fluid starts to splutter and spit turn off the car ,your trans pan is now empty and easy to remove without covering everything in oil ,remove the pan and clean it replace the filter and gasket ps add some more magnets the more the better , now you can run a piece of clear hose (bunnings has multiple sizes) into the gearbox from the door mirror add a funnel then cable tie to the mirror put the window down first so you can access the key to start it ,now add 4lt start the car run through another 4 litres etc until clean fluid comes out now refit cooler lines and with the engine running and a pump bottle top up until fluid comes out the fill hole put the plug in before switching off as once switched off fluid will pour out . now if you are debating weather a flush is necessary these gearboxes hold over 10lt dry fill so when you replace 4lt you are leaving 6lt of filthy oil in the gearbox and that is insane like changing less than half your engine oil and leaving the rest of the dirty stuff in there . Good video Browney keep up the good work.
Thanks Browney for all your videos. I've been doing all the basic barra mods shown on your series, and I love my BA now. Not going turbo, I'm happy with what I got after following your videos. Did it on a budget, and couldn't be happier with the results. Keep up the good work brother.
Nothing wrong with not going the turbo route - probably smarter that way! Plenty to enjoy still and keep the car on the road for a long time to come hopefully. Thanks very much for watching mate and enjoy the BA 👍
I flush the fluid in my BTR auto every two years or so. normally coming in to summer. and have always done so. the old oil always still looks pretty good, and in my case, I don't need any more than 8 liters for a full flush. thanks for your, & your wife's effort in making this video.
Thought I'd re-watch some Browney's Garage Videos again. Since this was first posted I have done a full service on the 4 speed in my BA sedan. As it was done on a hoist in a friends mechanics workshop I had all the tools at hand to not need to crawl under the car. Huge help when it came to refilling the gearbox. Ended up using a total of 20 litres to flush out and re-fill it. The car drives like new. Hope you get well enough to post more videos Browney. All the best.
@@BrowneysGarage I save $1,000 bucks mate and thanks for yr videos mind u I spent some cash on tools but hey I can fix most things on my bf ute now. Love a hoist tho. Cheers
I know of someone with an early Falcon FG with the 6 Speed ZF Auto ...He was quoted $ 1200.00 for > Auto Oil and filter < change ... LOL. The Wife got a Mazda3-5Speed Auto. When we bought it ... I asked the Service manager what type of oil goes in to the Auto Transmission ... He told me... One day I went back to the Dealer's parts department and asked for a Trans-Oil-Filter kit. I was the told ...there is no such filter ...He showed me on the Computer Screen... and also told me that he never issued one to the workshop. ... Well I ended up getting a Filter-Gasket kit on Ebay. I also used Penrite Oil !! Being a retired Motor-Mechanic helps :) !!
I find one of those under bed storage tubs from cheap as chips are great for that. Also I have a vacuum oil pump and suck most of the fluid out of the fill hole avoiding a mess.
Ok, I worked at a Ford dealership when the AU was new. We serviced these BTR autos in different circumstances. Police cars and Taxis were definitely serviced every 50,000 kms in conjunction with the 50,000 kms major service schedule. These vehicles were fitted with a factory fitted external cooler in front of the radiator and were known as police pack or taxi pack optioned. These commercial vehicles would have come with a supplementary service booklet along with the log books. This stated trans schedules of every 50,000kms and had a record section to stamp and sign. On other private owned commercial such as the utility and the 1 tonner it was an option known as towing pack and came with the same trans cooler, these had the same supplementary service book. The cooler was an indication to us as techs the trans required servicing every 50,000 kms. All other servicing requirements was purely up to the owner and was only a suggestion on the 50,000 kms service. It was purely a ploy to up sell or keep service costs down. My recommendation would be to service every 50k regardless. They are a good box despite some theories, but they do not like getting hot. So i would recommend also to fit the biggest cooler you can fit in the front to keep it cool also. It seemed as though Ford did somewhat keep it secret or not well known about service schedules of the trans. I will never know why.
Hey Greg, thanks very much for sharing this, awesome to hear experiences from guys like yourself. Already have bigger trans cooler up front and it doesn't get driven too much so we'll be a long time off 50k kms!.. yeah I should probably do it sooner with it seeing drags at least once or twice. I agree, I think they're a fine box overall, especially when they can be had for cheap if there is serious neglect and it needs replacing.
@@BrowneysGarage Another thing i forgot to mention was the level should be checked with the engine running, vehicle should be level, or on a hoist in our case. Its a pain in the arm, as the exhaust is super hot and in the way.
@@gregmyatt9932 Thanks Greg, I've never had a problem doing it this way - doesn't mean it's not wrong/less than ideal. I'll be sure to do it while running from now on... maybe with welding gloves on!
hey greg, thanks for your ford dealer insight. Looking at installing an external cooler on my btr. I live in north qld and hot days are a regular thing. I cant find a consistent answer, would you recommend running through the radiator AND an external cooler, or skipping the radiator and running just the external cooler.
@@enjay8950 The factory went through radiator, but being in Qld it would be no harm to go straight to cooler bypassing radiator, then also their is no worry of rad cooler bursting and filling your trans with coolant also.
@@BrowneysGarage Mate a little degreaser n she'll never know 🤣 hey bludy awsome effort putting a turbo on that thing cant wait to see how it turns out, doing the same on my 03 just saving up parts atm might even be able to embarrass two of my mates with an LS n a sc 3.8
The 4 speed btr auto box is just a 3 speed Borg Warner with an extra gear and has been used in fords since the mid sixties and was known as the Borg Warner 35, the 6 speed auto fitted from the BF onwards is built by ZF in Germany, that's why the cooler is on the block and not in the radiator and I think they use a different type of fluid
Doesn't apply to all BFs though. My BF wagon had the heat exchanger on the block (stupid idea IMHO) and it was only the four-speed flavour. Worst part was using an OBD2 scanner to reveal that "Solenoid E" had gone faulty but the Ford workshop manual not cross-referencing Solenoid E to what is ultimately Solenoid 6 in the rest of the literature. I had to call DSI (Chinese company that bought out Borg Warner a little while ago) and talk to their tech to find that out and tell my auto guy which solenoid to change for me. Yeah, I have a love-hate relationship with Ford when it comes to my secondary vehicle (aka shitbox). :P
11:56mins Just got a kit for an FG MK1 5-Speed. The heat exchanger is removed altogether, the heater pipe joined together and replacement (rubber) trans oil lines fit directly into the g'box (where the heat exchanger was) with supplied adapters and run all the way to the new trans cooler. The factory steel lines are bypassed all together.
Ive had my transmission flushed professionally before didn't know you could do it that way Browney cheers matey great informative vid.... ...john...Willaura..😎
If they're not going to charge an arm and a leg, which it seems most don't now, and do a decent job keep doing it that way mate - it's a messy, horrible job! 😂 Thanks John
Measured that pipe today on bf ,heat exchanger today,12.7 mm or half inch , never looked before and plan to bypass unit altogether. MJ products apparently sell a kit with all you need
Yep, sounds like a great solution. I should have just forked out for another, larger drain pan but I cheaper out and hoped for the best haha. Ah well, least the ATF cleans up pretty well from the floor.
I remember back in the early 1970's ... watching a driver at a Service Station taking off the radiator cap to check the water level...But what came next I will never forget. The Women Driver took off the Engine Oil-Filler Cap ... had a good look down the hole and decided to fill up the engine with engine oil till she could see it ( Oil ). :)
With all the urban myths of people doing this I find it hard to believe someone would actually do it... but with some of the people I’ve met I really shouldn’t! 🤣
Yet another crackin good video brownie ... Having just purchased an FGX 6 speed xr6 , this is an awesome money saver and I'll be servicing it easily now 👍 . Thanks again champ ... Much appreciated 👍💯😁
Finally I'm confident to do a service on my box after watching your vid. Your vids have been very helpful while working on my ba wags. Keep up the great work mate.
Nice! Not a hard job, just messy. Biggest point I'd make is take care with the fill bolt and don't over tighten the pan bolts, they don't need much. Thanks very much mate and good luck 👍
Great job Browney . Mate when ever I change the engine oil or the Transmission fluid I always put heaps of newspapers under the Transmission and oil sump because it’s alway a bloody messy job where all the oil and fluid never falls into the containers that I use to catch it all .
Thanks mate. I really should do the same, it’s a great idea, but every time I forget how bad last time was and go in with blind optimism that it’ll be fine! 🤣
@@BrowneysGarage I was the same until the Mrs clobbered me with the broom because of all the engine oil and transmission fluid on the nice clean floor 😆.
@Conservative Sniper Hunter Haha fair enough, Missus Browney isn't worried about the mess in the garage - don't give her any more excuses to belt me though!
That's a bit of a process, makes me happy to stick to bike. But I must say I may come over to the dark side and buy a car one day but gone 40 years without one lol Another great video thanks man. Also I now name you 'The All knowledgeable Talking Beard'!
Can't blame you mate, especially working under cars for crappy jobs like this one! 😂 'The All Researching Talking Beard' is probably more accurate but I'll take it, that's bloody great. Thanks mate
Still eagerly waiting more turbo updates Browney! Here's an idea...you talked about moving the transmission cooler for the intercooler, how about mounting the intercooler in front of the tranny cooler and running two flexible ducting hoses from the fog light cutouts, and then curving 90 degrees and running behind the intercooler and feeding air to the transmission cooler? Maybe not enough space for intercooler, oil cooler, and radiator. An old BMW I had (E36 328i M-Sport) had factory plastic air ducts running from the bumper ducts (beside fog lights) and directing air into the back of the front brakes, obviously to cool the brakes. Might be worth making something similar? Keep the updates coming!
Hoping to mount the intercooler in front on the trans cooler but space wise I don't think it will work on the bracket provided for the trans cooler, it's going to be tight. That's ok, I still have a plan to mount it in this spot that will hopefully work just the same and then everything should have plenty of airflow. Ducting isn't a bad idea, not sure how much airflow it would add with the foglights still in for the hassle of sorting and mounting them but definitely a good one to keep in mind, thanks mate! Also, hell yeah on the E36 328i M-Sport, would have been a great car!
@@BrowneysGarage it was a great car yes. That was back in Ireland before I moved out here, and before E36's started to cost crazy money. The E36 was fun but they don't have anywhere near the torque of the XR6. I've done mountain passes and scenic highways in 4th gear without ever having to change gear, E36 wouldn't stand a chance at that! I'll be following your build closely as my XR6 feels incredibly sluggish with that long first gear, it actually reminds me of a 4wd when you accelerate in first lol. Good choice on keeping the BTR, I've seen so many arguments for and against them, but with a high stall, larger oil pump from an AU or ED, and the solenoid bypass mod these boxes are actually supposed to handle decent power! Keep up the great videos!
Just subscribed, don't know why I didn't before. Just wanted to say you're a legend bro and the hard yards you put into these videos is much appreciated. I've been tryna figure out how to service my 5speed tranny on a G6 I just bought. Thanks very much for the kind words mate, I really appreciate that. Haven't worked on the 5 speed but just be sure they are similar enough to the 4 speed BTR for this to work or be similar. Good luck 👍
I think I mentioned in past comments I worked for ford ps love the cars not the tactics used by the company. One of the reasons for no dip stick was to create service revenue..
No shame in that mate, sadly nowadays it seems if we refused to work for companies with poor tactics there wouldn't be a great deal of jobs left! And I completely believe it, not the worst I've heard about a car company at least.
Good video overall and good advice, only id use the reccomened fluid which was specifically desgined for exavtly the BTR transmission "Castrol TQ95" as refferd By BTRE augaust 1994..
Yea mate I put the Penrite in it & had to go back to Castrol because until the car warmed up the Penrith made the changes like they were slow motion taking 2 - 3 seconds .. think it was too thick.
I have a 10micron home water filter system i hook in line to do a clean up around 50k then a full flush similar to what you did at 100k unless there is some converter lock up shutter then it just gets a flush.
Great trans fluid penrite fs trans fluid! Used it in my tb48 patrols 5speed auto since 200k (meant to be a seal unit also 🤣🤦♂️) Its done 350 and shifts like new. Change it every 50k coz it gets flogged 🤣.
Will suss it out, not sure if the pan would be thick enough to tap a thread in though so would have to weld a fitting to it or work another way around?
@@BrowneysGarage Thanks mate. I have tried to move it even inserting a pole over the socket handle to give more leverage and just slips off. I haven't jacked the car too much which can be an issue as i'm not completely underneath and can angle better. I'll give it another shot.
Don’t know if anything particularly sensitive is around there but put some heat into the case around the bolt head? I must have been damn lucky and haven’t had one that stuck yet, only been 3 or 4 though.
Awsome video next time if i was u i ad abit of auto smooth shift makes awesome difference on btr and i removed my cat pipe to to make it easier for me 😉 but great video and looking forward to the next video
Great idea. Not sure if the material is thick enough to tap, sure you'd have to watch for warping too if you welded to it. Maybe a fitting with a nut on the back side that would seal to the pan and obviously had a fitting that could be used to drain, or a good/patient welder I'm sure could get it done still.
My only difference is I dump 4lt at a time then refill with another 4lt using a low pressure fuel pump , wait till the oil comes up on special for $ 36.. Running g it through the gears is a very important step . Good job brown man .
Hey mate. I actually rang pwr and they stated that the cooler would fit with the factory intercooler and the larger f6 one as well. But saying that I might just wait and see how you go first .........
Thanks for sharing that mate, had hoped it would be the case with the provided mounting zip tie things and the mention in the install documents. Fingers crossed, I’m ok being the test dummy!

That`s a nice tutorial! Yes, we have this ugly oil cooler AKA heat exhchanger system on our Ford BF. This cooler finally broke and both liquids are mixed together... Apart from the entire cooling system must be flushed off the pinkish "cappuccino", the transmission must be fully cleaned too. But as I see, that`s nearly impossible to flush it completely, an amount of this mix will remain in a transformer... Can your technique help with full flushing or it needs for 4-5-7 or more oil/filter replacing in a row to reduce this cappuccino concentration only? Some people told me that this gearbox is already in a big doubt and can`t last for a long time. Is that really correct?
Hey mate, wish I could claim that was my idea but it wasn't. I picked them up from the below listed eBay seller out of the UK. I had one that was super tight & nearly rounded the hex off with a bar on the end of the socket , my last ditch effort involved drilling out the socket where the hole for the retainer is , to the size of a large screwdriver shank ( cutting the end off an old crappy one) it gets the levering force closer to the head of the bolt & worked well . I then ditched the plug & bought a new one .
Hi Browney, Thanks for the video. I have a 98 EL Falcon and wonder if it would be feasible to install a drain plug on the oil try for easier servicing. I live 2 hours away from a Ford Service Centre so used to do much of the service myself but after my accident I don't have strength in my shoulders and arms. Thus having a drain plug on the auto pan will be easier for me. Could you please give me your option on this matter. Thanking you in advance.👍👍
Hey Browney, did you know that castrol tq 95 was designed specifically for the btr electronic transmissions? I know you probably don’t want to do it again but it will run much better with it and it lasts much longer then any other trans oil 😊 If you read the tq 95 fluid specs you will understand why ford is so vague
Grass is always greener! Plenty of toys you guys get that I'd love to have as well, along with the relative lower price of cars and especially trucks over there. Glad to have you watching and hope you enjoyed mate 👍
Great video! Yeah I remember doing this as a very very avarage mechanic.... We used to drain probably around 15-16 litres into a 20L container. Great video though, as I don't rhink any other videos on RUclips show this. I like the BRT Transmissions... Yeah the 6 speeds are smoother but these can be serviced at home and cheaper to replace when the time comes 🙂👊
Thanks mate. I believe it, sure I could have gone through another 4-8 litres if I was fussy and could get my hands on it. Hopefully it's a little different take on a few things at least, not sure I'd seen the full job done like this at very least. I quite like them for the same reason, especially if it was something I was putting heap of KMs on. That and them being a lot more resilient to bad/old/low oil than newer boxes it seems.

For me , I didn’t have a good experience with Penrite atf . Box started slipping and died soon after . The 1-2 band was toast . No other scientific method to prove that it was the oil . But with my new built turbo box , I’m sticking with Castrol . Just wondering if anyone else has had the same happened to them ? Or was my old box going to die with the torque from the turbo and 12 to 14 psi ?
Maybe because Castrol TQ95 was developed in conjunction with BTR over a five year period when developing the box & is specifically recommended by ford as the ONLY fluid to use in a 4 speed BTR . Some mechanical workshops are getting the customer to sign a waiver if the car has over 100000klm that if they service the auto & it plays up after it , then the problem is not on them . These same workshops continue to use other brands/grades of oil including full synthetic & the problem keeps happening . I keep using TQ95 on our au & bf wagons with high klm & regular towing & have not had this issue.
Not a chance, you nailed the emoji! 😂 Guess I'll have to at least let her have a go, to be fair she's a great driver - it's just that she has very little fear and I'm a terrible passenger!
Man I replaced the battery and alternator in one of these and I'm still getting a low battery. Gets charged somewhat by driving but 2 hours of driving will just make it so its starts ok
So i put 8litres of trans fluid in and few days later its starting to slip... im using same trans fluid and wasnt sure if your meant to have 11 litres in there?
Fill it till it’s full, dribbling out the fill hole when car is level. Then run it through the gears, shut off and quickly check/fill again. Amount of fluid will differ but may well not have been enough. Good luck mate 👍
Great video! Just a question. When refilling the ATF, is it best to check the level while the engine is idling? The Transdoctor has on their webiste: "With T-bar in Park start engine, remove plug and fill till fluid trickles out of hole moderately then re-fit plug and tighten but not too tight a small nip up is enough..and your all done". Other mechanics say to check with the engine turned off and the oil at 40-50 degree. What do you reccomend? I appreciate your comments! Cheers
I'm a hack on the internet, don't take advice from me! 🤣 But to give some sort of answer, I've done it both ways with no problems and have been recommended both so it's a little unclear but I'm more leaning to the "Transdoctor" method you've listed these days 👍
Does a standard au have the same gear box? And I’ve been told that old oil in the transmission will stop it from slipping And when will we see more eb content Well I think it’s an eb
Near enough the same, serviceable the same for sure. Not knowledgeable enough to comment on anything more intricate than that really sorry mate. The EB and ED project will pick up once the turbo series wraps up, unless I get really held up on something in the turbo series.
Oh and on the 'servicing a gearbox will cause it to slip' issue - again I'm no expert but the logic I've heard behind this is if you have a particularly abused or old auto, much of the friction material from the clutch plates can be worn off and washed into the oil. The oil then carries this friction material and helps stop the clutch packs slipping, but when serviced/flushed it's lost and the extra friction it added is lost, giving issues that were bound to pop up at some point anyway. Not sure whether I believe that or not but it's a theory I've heard and seems plausible.
How prices have gone up in a couple of years, Browney!
A Ryco RTK1 kit is now $42 and Penrite Auto-Trans Fluid is $71, up from $20 and $50 respectively.
Sealed for life just means they expect it to last until about a month after the warranty period
Yep, I'd be tipping you're right there mate 😂
I used to work at Ford and thats a well known fact amongst technicians.
A under bed plastic crate from bunnings works a treat

Maybe a case of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" for a very long time then?
That and the ZF are quite picky on fluid used and level.

Fantastic video, currently fixing up ol reliable. Very useful!
and this is why i preferred my 4speed btr over the 6speed. easy and cheap service
They're a great box for what they are!
Any fuel economy benefit of the 6 speed is neutralised by higher servicing and repair costs. The BTR is awesome.

Be more satisfying if the turbo was done! You’re right though, good to have a job well-ish done.

Could a sump plug be tapped into the tray for next time? By using a flare nut or some type of AN fitting?
..... Good thinking Mate, probably on the side deep end of the tray, (not underneath).
Great idea. Not sure if the material is thick enough to tap, sure you'd have to watch for warping too if you welded to it. Maybe a fitting with a nut on the back side that would seal to the pan and obviously had a fitting that could be used to drain, or a good/patient welder I'm sure could get it done still.
You can get a duel side lock then just a tap for added support.

My filler bolt is very tight. Wish it was as easy as yours 😂
Not like one of my cars to make a job easy too, I got lucky!

Can I change my 4 speed tans to a 6 on my bf falcon

@@BrowneysGarage reckon she would be. Quick crawl underneath should work that out
