Hi Melinda! I realize this was a while ago for you, but I read The Maiden just recently and really loved it! I also think that it’s a lighter read for someone who isn’t a big historical reader, like it didn’t feel so historic to me, in the “boring” sense. Not so dense, I guess.
This might be a spoiler for someone who hasn’t read it, but I think what changed for her to change her mind was that she was kind of trapped in the unwantedness, and being more and more weighed down by that, and then that old reliable creep suddenly didn’t seem so bad. Because he could give her something she so desperately wanted and didn’t get where she should have been getting it. Emotionally, I mean! 😅 Also, I don’t think it was entirely her own choice, since he got to her so early. Other than that I agree that it really came to life and Violet was for sure the star of the show 😊

Yes! I think Violet was really the one who shone in here. I gave this book to my nieces to try, so I'm waiting to hear what they thought of it.
