    Honestly disabled is fine. I'm chantel and I'm disabled. Some people are sensitive about it but I think it's fine. It's all about how it's used, like anything. If you're using something to insult someone then obviously it's wrong. But to just describe someone as disabled is absolutely fine :)

    I haven't read too many if any children classics, but I am an English Literature Major. I love looking at different symbolisms or ideas that play out and I especially love looking at how women are viewed differently than men like how women are seen as either being the angel or the monster, being the madwoman in the attic, or how women's curiosities are seen as transgressions while men's curiosities are seen as them going on the hero's journey. Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland were never my favorites when I was a child, but your theory/argument intrigues me and I might have to read them now! Thanks to your video, I've just now enrolled myself into a children's literature course which I am quite excited about now! I needed a 5th class and now I have it, thanks!
    Oh! And I do have a recommendation, although it can be read by children it is something that adults will understand more. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It is very powerful and has to do with the child that still lives within all of us and how we need to remember that child and how important it is to remember that each person has a soul.

    To answer your question about disability language... Different people feel differently. Some insist on "person first" language (so "person with a disability"), some prefer to own it as an identity ("disabled person"), some prefer other things... If you ask me, intent is everything and if you're interaction with someone in particular, just using the language that they feel comfortable with, be open to asking and listening... I think just don't be a douche and you're good. lol But I'm not fussy.

    • @silverbroom02
      @silverbroom02 8 лет назад +1

      In case that wasn't clear, I think that the way you treat someone is always more important than the language you use, but there's certainly nothing wrong with also wanting to "say it 'right'."

    I need to buy Black Beauty and Pippi Longstocking to complete my collection of Puffin Chalk Classics. I am going to start picking up the Puffin Children's classics, the one in a bunch of colours and the Puffin In Bloom. Although I am only 15 I still want to have a bunch of beautiful children's classics for my future children and I'll teach them not to destroy books.

    If you like Anne of green gables, you will like Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm. It is REALLY well written and features a likeable but imperfect protagonist👧.

    Susan Moody wrote a sequel to The Secret Garden called Misslewaite. It's really good. There's also a sequel to Heidi called Heidi Grows Up but is really hard to find. Have you read Pollyanna and Pollyanna Grows Up. Really good reads

    i was just waiting for you to say the alice books honestly, i actually own two copies of kinda like two in one books of alice's adventures and through the looking glass, definitely my favourite classic. I just love the way Alice thinks and interacts with nonsensical characters. I also liked how you compared it and peter pan because that's actually my best friends favourite classic.
    (I've been thinking about getting an alice tattoo as well tbh like maybe like a 10/6 hat or a white rose that's painted red but that's kinda to go with the song painting flowers as well haha)

    Love this video. There is a publishing trend towards projecting the Anglosphere-Classics through newly crafted presentations. I love those ornate books you had, but there is a secret history of children's classics if we dig deeper than what Penguin and Co present to us time and time again. Books such as Michael Ende's Momo and The Night of Wishes. Two of Philip Pullman's favourites: The Owl Service and The Magic Pudding. Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones is an incredible creation that surpasses some its forbearers such as The Wizard of Oz. Others include: A Wizard of Earthsea, War Horse, The Rescuers by Margery Sharp and anything by Ottofried Pruessler. Then there is Finn Family Moomintroll the classic Finnish series vy Tove Jannsen and Eiko Kadono's classic book Kiki's Delivery Service. To name but a few.

    Just to let you know in the terms of the Secret Garden he would probably use chronically ill but disabled is a perfectly fine word just knowing the context of the secret garden I don’t know if I would use it

    The Secret Garden: Omg I got that book in the 3D grade and I was to small to understand it and I had this really really small copy and I could barely read it because there were so many words on each page and they were like 280-ish pages and there were no pictures and I really didn’t like the book but I recently started reading it and I loved it so thanks for recommending it! 😊 💕 📚 📖
