    My parents saw the original Broadway production of "My Fair Lady" in 1956, and then saw the film eight years later. When I grew up, I asked my father who he thought did a better job as Eliza -- Julie Andrews or Audrey Hepburn. He thought for a moment and said: "I think that Julie was the better Eliza pre-transformation, and Audrey was the better Eliza post-transformation." Then he got a faraway look in his eyes and smiled: "MY GOD, when she came down the stairs in that gown!" Many years later, I got an insider's view of that delectable moment: I played Colonel Pickering in a sensational production of "My Fair Lady", and was honored to share the stage with a brilliantly talented singer-actress as Eliza, who could have stepped onto the stage of the Winter Garden in the role, and left the audience feeling that their tickets would have been cheap at ten times the price. Every evening when she descended the staircase, I got to say "Miss Doolittle, you look beautiful". And I've never had to do less acting in my life.

      You have a good eye. Most viewers are oblivious to such details. Henry is a very composed man who rarely lets his emotions get the better of him. I think in a way that is why Eliza falls in love with him. Henry is steady as a rock. Henry also shows his love but in a very unconventional way. Yes she matters to him immensely. Think about it he spent 6 month of his life refining this ugly duckling and turning her into a swan. All his other projects wage earnings etc etc etc where placed on hold. Very few people could realize the expense he made taking her in the way he did. Gave her a home, her own room, fed her clothed her and many many lessons. Who paid for all of that?? HENRY not the Coronel. By this point The coronel had recanted his bet and it was off.

Katz were first called in to rescue the film from completely disintegrating back in 1994. The problem is aging Eastmancolor prints tend to go red. I saw a Warnercolor print of “Rebel Without a Cause”
      at MOMA in the ‘70’s, and it was damn near unwatchable. Meanwhile, Technicolor, an imbibition method never seems to change much.
      The Restoration prints of “My Fair Lady” specify they were mastered on Eastmancolor. By then, the Technicolor process was no longer available.

    I'm told that the inspiration for 'My Fair Lady' came from the real life story of Sabine Baring-Gould, author of the hymn, Onward Christian Soldiers and the working class, mill worker, from a town near to where I live, who he married and elevated to high society.

    • @pansepot1490
      @pansepot1490 3 года назад +1

      I don’t know where you got that but it sounds wrong.
      ‘My Fair Lady’ the film is the film version of of the same title musical which is based on “Pygmalion”, a Play by George Bernard Shaw.
      The inspiration comes from the Ancient Greek myth of Pygmalion about an artist who fell in love with his muse. No marriage involved. Shaw intended his work as a satire on society. The romantic element was introduced as crowd pleasers but it makes very little sense in the story. In subsequent writings Shaw explained that Eliza married her young boyfriend and set up a flower shop.

      Agreed. The whites are startling and the lack of subtle hue and value transitions makes them look cartoony and flat. The original, non-Blu-ray film was too dark as a consequence of the technology available at the time, and looks better on the older and smaller televisions that the tapes were intended for rather than the new screens with larger pictures and higher resolutions. The Blu-ray did an excellent job. That bit of overcast left makes the film look dreamy and retains the vintage feel.
