I literally just started clapping and cheering when you said you were reading Serpent and the Wings of Night!!!! I’m so excited! It’s so good! I’ve been trying to get people to read this book for MONTHS
lockwood & co is my new obsession right now!!! i’m reading the first book of the series and it’s very reminiscent of percy jackson, also one of my favorite/comfort book series. can’t wait for season two (if netflix decides to renew the show)
I enjoyed Serpents and the Wings of Night but you HAVE to read Carissa's other trilogy. The War of Lost Hearts is amazing. I found the characters had a bit more development and nuance than her newer works.
Yess! I previously just finished Sorcery of Thorns, and it’s really helped me get a good start on reading again this year! Love your videos Cari, always helps me do something productive and feel great😊
Lockwood and co is so good, the book series is really good too and if you want even more details I recommend reading the books because the first season packed to books in one and it did skip some things
Hearing you talk about Lockwood & Co made my heart scream, it’s such a fantastic show and an amazing book series!!! They really slacked in the promo department for US Netflix which is such a shame for how great it is
i’ve been in a reading slump for almost three years now and finding your channel has really made me miss it! ive been craving to reread The Bone Witch (which is such a good book and series (completed) and i highly recommended!!)
It made me happy to see this bc I also read serpents to escape a slump this month and really liked it! I’m going to start book 2 soon, but I’m reading the novella that goes between first (it’s called Six Scorched Roses and it’s so delightful in an unexpected way, like vampire pride and prejudice vibes? totally recommend it!). Excited to start the next book and see more of Lilith, Vale, Mische and the rest
I binged Serpent in two days because of this video and I LOVED it! A lot of the plot points reminded me of the Blood & Ash series (book 1 sucks, the others are better), but more action packed and very well written. After finishing That Time I Drugged A Dragon, I needed to fill that romantasy void and this delivered!! Thank you for introducing me to another great author ❤
Short stories and nonfiction usually help me out of a reading slump. For me, the slump comes after reading something emotionally heavy or a story/characters I was really invested in and I just need a minute.
Carissa Broadbents War of Lost Hearts Series is one of my top 3 series ever. I'm about to start on this newer series and I'm so excited about it. I'll watch this after.
Love the video, thank you, Cari! So glad you liked Lockwood. Please please please consider giving a try to the books. They are really page turners and kept me awake for several nights, even though I'm way older than their target reading audience😍 They have ghosts, the Big Plot Twist, and interactions between the characters are so cute and funny
I'm so glad you enjoyed Serpent!! I read it in January and I haven't had a reading experience for a fantasy like I did with this book in a really long time. I'm also reading the second book right now and still enjoying it!💞
I love this type of more vloggy content and love seeing that you will branch out more from the 'funny fantasy' books!!! So excited about what's to come!! ❤
I relate so much to what you said about TV versus books. I realized I really enjoy romance books, especially if it's more like reading, romantic comedy, so much more than any sort of visual media. I definitely feel like TVs and movies can go cheesy and just push me out of the story so easily when it's much easier for me to forgive cheesiness when I read it.
I was so anxious going into this video because I was scared you would not like "The Serpent and the Wings of Night" but so excited and happy for you that you enjoyed it! TBF the second book was not as good as the first but I haven't read Mische's book yet so excited for that one still :). Lockwood & co. is now on my To be seen list 😉. And I laughed so hard at the dig to Feyre about being able to solve riddles 😂
Yay! Glad you got out of your slump and great choice to do it. I loved both books in the nightborn duet and was so hungry for more, I jumped straight into the novella afterwards (Six Scorched Roses). Really recommend that too. It's such a good feeling to be engrossed in a world!
I really loved Serpents and the Wings of Night for also getting me out of a little slump too! I liked it for a lot of the reasons you mentioned - Oraya’s competence, agency, and the friendship and rivalry between her and Raihn, which I thought was really well-balanced. I gobbled the first one up but had trouble with the second book, especially at the beginning, because I feel like the shift in the power dynamic undermined the great relationship building of the first one. Totally a *that’s my girl* book hahahaha
Ahhh i wanna travel to Seoul so bad. Everything there looks so comforting and full of cozy vibes 🌸 also i will never not crack up at the way you introduce the bat boys 😂 i was cackling ㅋㅋ
It's so good to be back here I haven't watched any of the videos lately due to just family issues and bs and it's so nice to be back here I don't even know what anybody is reading lately I haven't read a new book in a long time I think maybe the newest book I read was Leigh bardugo hell-bent so behind the times I wish I knew about any of the books you're talking about it just everytime I see you talking about books it's just love the passionate feeling that you put into it because I've always felt that way about books and literally every way I haven't watched any buddies videos about books in a long time
Serpent and the Wings of Night was truly a surprise for me too, I really loved it! Like Hunger Games meets Vampires a bit? I'm starting the book 2 tonight, I can't wait but I'm afraid I'll be let down ah!
I'm glad you were able to get out of your reading slump; it's usually a recommendation from channels like this one that helps rekindle my love of literature. ❤ I've got a few things checked out from the library, but I'm primarily waiting for TJ Klune's In the Lives of Puppets to finally be released. I'm hoping it will be as lovely as The House in the Cerulean Sea.
I'm in a bit of a slump as well, so I checked out a few manga from the library and am hoping that the pretty art will help pull me along and out of it. Definitely going to add this book to my TBR though for when I'm craving another book in this style.
the locked tomb put me in one of those reading slumps where it was like “i’ll never read anything this good again” and i dnfed a few books. the priory of the orange tree has helped so far we’ll see
hey oh I love your videos so much. I hope you continue to make read along videos because I enjoy them very much even if you choose some other genres. I recommend the bone shard daughter books!
I can soooo relate to this! I read a bunch of Laini Taylor books and fell in love with her world building, and then after that had a streak of DNFs. I actually read a different Carissa Broadbent book, Daughter of No Worlds, and that got me out of it! I'm dragging my feet a bit finishing the series because the third book is just sooo long, so I might read this book to break it up a bit
i've heard daughter of no worlds was good but not necessarily good enough to continue the series so that tracks hahah i feel sort of the same with serpent now after reading the second book :/
@@caricanread honestly that's so real, I wanted to read serpent now that the second book was coming but thought I'd give her earlier series a go since it came up to borrow at my library, and although i DEVOURED the first book Daughter of No Worlds in practically one sitting just a few days ago, I somehow have like no motivation to read the second book?
I would recommend two older book series that I loved as a teenager and still enjoy rereading as an adult when being in a reading slump for too long. The first is the Starcrossed series by Josephine Angelini, a blend of Twilight-like characters and greek mythology (heavily influenced by troy). The second is the Immortal Beloved series by Cate Tiernan, which I found very refreshing as the magic system was unlike anything I've read before 😊
Hi Cari, I really like your mature-darker book recommendations: Ninth House, How High We Go in The Dark, Station Eleven. Can't wait for more of your reviews on book in that genre! Anyway I don't know about getting slapped, but if you want your heart to be broken, then you should try reading The Discomfort of Evening by Marieke Lucas. Heartbreaking but really beautifully written.
You explaining what your book slump felt like, not liking anything that you're reading, resonated with me so much. I am also in a slump! I thought about picking up this book, but instead I picked up ACOTAR for the first time, yet it's still not hitting... 😮💨
HOOORAYYYY!!! I’m so glad you liked this one! Finally I get to recommend something to you!!! (did you finish the second one? VERY curious about your thoughts there. I…struggled. ha!)
Your endorsement is the first thing that’s made me want to check out this book! I’ve seen it all over tiktok but I’ve been burned by those kind of books so many times I was giving it side eye haha
I'm in the same exact type of reading slump as you and it's felt like I've been reading the same books for forever and not really enjoying them. I also saw Susan talk about this book once and then suddenly everyone was talking about it. Book Gods please be kind to me as I begin this journey with this book!
I've been struggling with the same problem! I feel like all i read now is mediocre fantasy because its easy but its caused such a slump. would love to see more videos on non fantasy books ❤
Im reading Carissa Broadbent's "Daughter of no worlds" book right now and im loving it so far. I havent been able to keep that book down since I started. Once im over with this series i will definitely check out serpent and the wings of night. Cari u've got to give The daughter of no worlds a try. I assure you that u will love it. 😭😭🙌🏻🙌🏻❤❤❤
Reading slumps are never fun. I've recently been reading some books by a new favorite author, FT Lukens! Currently reading Spell Bound by them and it's so good! The banter, the magic, the characters; its fantastic!
Hey Cari, i wish i could just sit down and read whole day too haha, i always love and await your videos, they feel like talking to a friend.😭 Anyway since you asked for recommendations- i haven't quit, and i will recommend The Sword of Kaigen again, it's a bit longer than these and it's adult fantasy and i was crying my eyes out sometimes but you need to give it a go it's so good.😭 But definitelly different than these, it's not romance, it's a war story (but it has romance in it too) so yeah, and the two main characters are a mother and son duo who can waterbend.
The only book that have made me feel something has been the Crave series. My reading slump has me scraping the bottom of the worst barrel but no thoughts, head empty and reading 😌✨
A book that slapped me in the face recently was Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. The female protagonist has that compitent, female rage compentent you were kinda talking about. It is the first in what will be a trilogy. Highly recommend if you're looking for something different.
I'm actually in the midst of a reading binge! But been there, done that. I've been more into non fiction at this point but also enjoying the audiobook of The Idiot by Dostoevsky. Trying to inch back into classics. Great video as always, Cari! P.S. Fantasy is always a slump buster for me! P.S. Lockwood and Co and Locke and Key are both favorites of mine as well!
I LOVED the "Scythe" Series by Neal Shusterman. It's one of those series where the scale of the conflict starts out small in the first book but by the end of the series, the fate of the whole world is at stake.
I just picked up Nettle and Bone by Ursula Vernon and I haven’t started it yet but I’ve heard soooo many good things about it! 🤩🤩 haven’t heard anyone talk about it online though, but many people in my friend group enjoyed it
I went through a similar reading slump earlier this month. They're so frustrating! I've read the first hundred or so pages of The Serpent and the Wings of Night and really enjoyed it--I need to get back to it. People are saying the author could be the next SJM. I haven't read enough to say if I agree with that or not though. Haha.
Omg I just started the video, so I don't know how this will go for you, but I LOVED the serpent and the wings of night!! 😭 Ate it up in one day. Carissa Broadbent is an amazing author. I'm currently reading her earlier series, the war of lost hearts, and it's amazing, too! Can't wait to read the second book of her vampire series. She's great at creating drama and making it all explode 😂
you should definitely check out the mindf*ck series too, the female lead in it is literally a serial killer so she's pretty unhindged but there also a reason why she's committing all those murders and the books are really good (also her love interest is an fbi agent who is in charge of her case)
If you like a strong female lead, vampires and a bit of smut… I would recommend The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. I love book series and this one has a lot of books and a lot of spin offs! Also… if you have read this series and have some recommendations… please comment them! I’m searching for a new series to read!
Yup, now I know that I was def in a reading slump as well 😂 I started with the priory of the orange tree but somehow got stuck after the first 10 chapters. So many different storylines and it just felt like a total blur. So I put that one away and now started with the Kingdom of the Wicked series by Kerri Maniscalco. The serpent and the night wing is def the next one on my reading list!! 😁
I loved Lockwood & Co, I hope there are more seasons. I am currently reading the collection of novellas, Different Seasons by Stephen King. I had never read King before, I had seen or heard of the film adaptions of three of the four stories. Apt Pupil is horrifying!
I'm currently reading Modern Divination and I'm confused too. The vibes are keeping me reading so far, and also me wanting to love this book despite the confusion lmao
@@caricanread Exactly! I'm close to the 100 pages mark and we're like mainly only in the main character's head?? Feels weird and i think causes a lot of the spacing issues 🥲
Honestly, hearing you chatting about books new or old is amazing 😍 I highly recommend The Mercies by Kiran Hargrave if you haven't read it already and I missed it somehow, a short summary "Inspired by the real events of the Vardø storm and the 1620 witch trials, The Mercies is a feminist story of love, evil, and obsession, set at the edge of civilization" I would love to know what you thought of it, it was in my top 3 books of 2022 🥰
I'm currently reading the Fourth Wing and I'm so enthralled about it, and I never thought I would love a story about a world of dragons. I'm not that type of reader. (Yes, a romance girly is what I am!)
I only read fantasy occasionally, I’m more into lit fic. Still, I’ve watched every video of yours, including the ones that are many hours long talking about fantasy books because of how much I enjoy your character and storytelling 🫶🏻 so it’s safe to say I’ll still watch your videos, it doesn’t matter which genre you decide to read or what kind of videos you choose to make!
I have actually been finishing my books. I finished Saturn's Children by Charles Stross which I wouldn't recommend to you as it has smut but its weird because its between ai robots but I would say the message is more about slavery. I enjoyed his futuristic take of our expanding to other worlds and machines. I finished it to read one you recommend which is The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. I did enjoy it. I am a good ways into Cinda Williams Chima - The Warrior Heir. I expect to have it read in the next day or 2. I don't know what I have planned after it. I understand getting into a reading slump so I normally switch over to watching anime or play a game or even watch some youtube videos to free myself of reading for a little while.
"She knows how to solve riddles"

We felt that stab at Feyre and it was hilarious 😂👏

I just picked up Nettle and Bone by Ursula Vernon and I haven’t started it yet but I’ve heard soooo many good things about it! 🤩🤩 haven’t heard anyone talk about it online though, but many people in my friend group enjoyed it
This sounds very good, I need a lil boost for my reading, too. Sadly, my local library doesn‘t have this book 🫤 Love watching your reading vlogs.
Haha.
She’s definitely a prolific fantasy writer like sjm 😂😂😂
Omg I just started the video, so I don't know how this will go for you, but I LOVED the serpent and the wings of night!! 😭 Ate it up in one day.
Carissa Broadbent is an amazing author. I'm currently reading her earlier series, the war of lost hearts, and it's amazing, too! Can't wait to read the second book of her vampire series.
She's great at creating drama and making it all explode 😂
you should definitely check out the mindf*ck series too, the female lead in it is literally a serial killer so she's pretty unhindged but there also a reason why she's committing all those murders and the books are really good
(also her love interest is an fbi agent who is in charge of her case)
If you like a strong female lead, vampires and a bit of smut… I would recommend The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. I love book series and this one has a lot of books and a lot of spin offs! Also… if you have read this series and have some recommendations… please comment them! I’m searching for a new series to read!
I love this white shirt so much 🤩
just put it on my tbr, i have like 40 books on my nightstand. i'm officially ridiculous, i'm brain deep in "The Change"
the life of a reader!
The bat boys montage took me tf out 😂😂😂
I bing watched the whole Lockwood and co in one day and I haven't been the same ever since 🙃
SO GOOD!
10:20 is one of my favorite things from your channel Cari, I die laughing every time 😭😂
What book are they from?
Yup, now I know that I was def in a reading slump as well 😂
I started with the priory of the orange tree but somehow got stuck after the first 10 chapters. So many different storylines and it just felt like a total blur.
So I put that one away and now started with the Kingdom of the Wicked series by Kerri Maniscalco.
The serpent and the night wing is def the next one on my reading list!! 😁
"Wish her safe at home" by Stephen Benatar and "Bear" by Marian Engel
I loved Lockwood & Co, I hope there are more seasons.
I am currently reading the collection of novellas, Different Seasons by Stephen King. I had never read King before, I had seen or heard of the film adaptions of three of the four stories. Apt Pupil is horrifying!
That intro rejuvenated me after a long day at work 🥲 thank you ❤️
Ah, I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who felt that way about Modern Divination! I first thought I read that scene wrong!
I felt like i was reading every scene wrong 😂😂

"That's my girl books" is the vaguest yet also most oddly specific descriptor I have ever heard.
You are the best !! ❤😊

I'm currently reading Modern Divination and I'm confused too. The vibes are keeping me reading so far, and also me wanting to love this book despite the confusion lmao
Right? I felt like the ingredients were there but just mix in incorrectly 😭
@@caricanread Exactly! I'm close to the 100 pages mark and we're like mainly only in the main character's head?? Feels weird and i think causes a lot of the spacing issues 🥲
I don’t know if you know the game Life Is Strange but the beginning montage with the song just really gave the same vibes.
Honestly, hearing you chatting about books new or old is amazing 😍
I highly recommend The Mercies by Kiran Hargrave if you haven't read it already and I missed it somehow, a short summary "Inspired by the real events of the Vardø storm and the 1620 witch trials, The Mercies is a feminist story of love, evil, and obsession, set at the edge of civilization"
I would love to know what you thought of it, it was in my top 3 books of 2022 🥰
I'm currently reading the Fourth Wing and I'm so enthralled about it, and I never thought I would love a story about a world of dragons. I'm not that type of reader. (Yes, a romance girly is what I am!)
i am having an identical slump month and this is the book i’m reading to pull me out?! i am shook at this
😂😂😂 great minds think alike!
have you read a queen’s thief? the entire series is so good, and i think you’d really enjoy it!
Just finished book 2 I think you’ll like it! Fortunately it’s not a 1028472 book series like most of these fantasy romance books lately 😅
