I managed to get an as new, Britannia in the Diamond Jubilee royal set and added a sound chip. It goes really well and can pull lots of coaches. I bought five locos over the weekend, including Bachmann's Class 11F 502 'Zeebrugge' in Great Central Railway Lined Green with factory sound. I want to repaint my own coaches for it. The GCR preserved railway is my local. I also got the gold plated Flying Scotsman (unopened), Dapol class 73, Kernow Class 41 and Bachmann retooled class 24. I also have an ammunition wagon kit for the railway gun. It is the correct model too. I am of course now eating at the soup kitchen.
The thing now is that if Hornby were to again reintroduce these to their range now, with the new price increases at the start of September, it is likely they'd be going for around £260

hi sam the class 6 is one of my favourite locos . this model is an adequate representation. but as usual it has issues with the lack of metal running plate and other metal features substituted with plastic . one thing that made me happy with this model is the motor has been changed and thankfully is not the same as the 9F. oh i see that this model is capable to run properly on your layout ! elbow nudge to the hornby person that watches your videos..
Thanks for sharing - yeah it is quite plasticy for over £200 RRP, that's very true! And exactly... funny how some locos run fine, others don't, yet some people conclude it's my layout to blame ;) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Good review here Sam, definitely a locomotive I have on my list which will go very well with my 7MT Oliver Cromwell and 8P Duke of Gloucester, the one I would like to get is the one that has the yellow axleboxes on the tender which I think is named Clan Stewart.
I've wanted a Clan for ages, but whenever I see a second-hand one on Hattons it's always very expensive. As an aside, can I suggest checking out the Heljan Class 16? It looks a little bit like the Class 15, but built by North British and even less successful. By the way, although none of the original Clans were preserved, a new example (72010 'Hengist') is apparently still under construction.
It is good to see a video on perhaps the lesser of the three BR Standard Pacifics. Its reputation was shoddy because so few were built when compared to the Class 7's that only a small handful of crews had adequate experience with them. It's unfair to compare them to the Brittanias as they were smaller in size AND power classification. I am very intrigued to see 72010 Hengist run once she is completed. The group behind her construction are looking to improve upon the design in the same ways that the group behind Duke of Gloucester did (drafting, blastpipe, etc). Only then I feel we will be able to see the Clans at the potential they should have been allotted during development. Another great video, Sam.
A great comment. Drivers that were used to them say that driven well, the only problem was that they were not easy to get over roughly 85mph. The last five were better than the first ones in that regard. So, not as much a failure as most people would say. The improvements should make "Hengist" unbeatable!
I got mine from Kernow at the same price after having my original order cancelled by Hattons but didn't reorder from elsewhere at the time. Really impressed with mine when it came, I have always liked the look of the Clans, not to big for a Pacific but still has a presence. Only problem was the lubrication gear (as per the instructions) which was loose. Easy fix though
Thanks a lot for sharing - yeah it's a nice looking loco isn't it? Very glad we have one in OO! Glad you were able to sort yours out easily too, Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam, I don't know whether it has already been mentioned in the comments but there is a significant amount of resistance being generated by the tender unit, as in some of the crawl shots the tender centre axle is not turning, even after running in.
Thanks for sharing! Yes it's due to the pickups - fairly common issue with Hornby - but it doesn't generate terribly significant resistance as the tender is pretty light! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have the same 7MT as you do, and the torque is better but the clicking was AWFUL. That part of the running gear was so loose it jammed once, and i had had enough of it so i just took some clippers and snipped them off. Runs perfectly now lmao
Hornby did 3 Clans in the initial release window (001 Clan Buchanan, 005 Clan McGregor, and 008 Clan MacLeod. Whether they were all in 2009, I dunno), so 004 Clan Macdonald and 009 Clan Stewart are the 4th and 5th out of 10 (or 11 if you includen Hengist which is under construction). Very disappointed with the lack of etched nameplates. The price is the major thing putting me off getting one, and any loco more than £100 should have etched plates. Also surprised its missing the lamp iron on the smokebox front. My Brit (70000 Britannia her self, in plain black) runs perfectly... I could do with a 2nd one in a more standard BR green, with the later style smoke deflectors with handholds cut into it instead of handrails (which obscured drivers views)
Looks great but then again the internals and the usual H quality issues..., although they seem to have improved somewhat by now. Not sure if one driven axle transmitting all motion through the rods is a clever ideas. i.e. low resistance. In fact, we do think that such a mechanism adds to friction and cogging actually (rods pushing). In reverse less because the rods pull. Pulling physically always displaces mass more easily. We’d rather prefer high precision gearing (like watch quality) to all 6 driving wheels tbh, so there is no difference in pull or push, i.e. forward or reverse. Fair review Sam. The RRP, no lights, cheapo motor, no smoke generator, etc., etc... Quite preposterous. For the price you have paid, one can’t complain we thought.
Generally there is an improvement from Hornby now, at least little by little! Particularly evident in their new releases. I can only speak empirically, having not experimented, but the locos that run the best seem to be the ones with one driven axle... maybe the extra gearing/complexity makes other locos run worse? Single drive locos are much smoother and free running in my experience! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, I bought a Hornby Clan class loco early this year: Clan Stewart 72009 late crest. Runs well even at the crawl. Detail is very much the same. My favourite of the BR Standards in my collection. Paid a little over £180 if I remember. And again another good review Sam.
Thanks for sharing Brian - really glad yours runs well too... hard to complain when these expensive models are built and run as they should! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Another entertaining and informative video. As for as the high price is concerned, always look at the bright side of life, Sam. By Marklin standards, you got off cheap. I just dropped 700 bucks for a new Marklin loco. Granted, the M loco is larger (4-8-2), museum quality in detail and mostly metal. Still, it makes the H loco look like a bargain. It's all relative!
I always thought these engines were a strange middle-ground between the Britannias and Bullied Pacifics, so I'm not surprised they're ignored most of the time
Great review Sam as usual. I think it is a good looking engine but I not a expert on UK engines but to me it looks just like the Britannia. I still would buy one if it was a lot cheaper. Also I would not be as generous as you the quality rating for that kind of money. Keep them high quality reviews coming.
Thanks a lot Louis - oh yeah it's very similar to the Britannia, I'd struggle to tell them apart if they weren't next to eachother! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Just to give you a good reason to be wanting to kill me : I've bought mine this January for 169 € from Modellbahn Union in Germany... Yes, it's euros, not British pounds, you can get your pitchfork now... 😁😁😁😁😁 As with the actual price/quality ratio, the assembly mishaps are unacceptable. The overall aspect is, as you said, correct. Acceptable for the price as paid, on the scroogy side for GBP 200. The drivetrain is correct, only missing is a flywheel. The overall performances are in the middle end for a GBP 200+ model, and more than acceptable for 169 €. As usual with UK models, it is overspeeding. Not a shunter anyway, but can perform normally on slow speed pass, like station or bridge crossing, or slow speed sections, permanent or not. A perfectible model, yes, but more than useable as is. To buy only with a harsh discounted price, minimum 25 to 30 % below the RRP. For the price, minimum a flywheel and a sprung basekeeper plate are the minimum. A Dapol-like tender coupling, plus a flickering firebox and a die-cast running plate would justify the price asked. With, of course, a zero glue blotches quality control. There is not a lot of things to change to have a superb model. Just for fun : I have imagined a 5MT tank version of this class, with a 4-6-4 wheel configuration to accommodate an acceptable sized coal bunker at the rear. Just replace the Cartazzi axle with a bogie. This class, the Fell class, numbers 81000 to 81024, would be used in the area where I have set my mystery stories, the Yorkshire Dales. Ans as for the Britannia class, I am more looking at the Dapol N scale version by now than to the Hornby model, guess why...
I feel like a common theme for all of these locos with the rear axle being driven is good backwards slow speed and bad forwards slow speed. I wonder if it would be different if the center axle was driven
I'm sure it would be. Even driving the front axle would improve more commonly used forward performance as the coupling rods then drag the other driving wheels. When the rear axle is driven the rods are pushing the leading axles. Recipe for disaster, pushing them as they do now. Driving the middle axle means that the lack of accuracy at this level of engineering in the alignment of the wheels , rods and drive would effectively be halved. This would mean the engine would run much more smoothly and with a lot less wear. Certainly Hornby seem to have little concern for efficiency in the manner in which their models run these days.
I'd love a Clan in my collection, but not at Hornby prices. I don't understand Hornby's pricing structure. I'll keep an eye out for any sales though :). You seem to find them a fair bit, so I should have half a chance :).
Hi Sam. May I ask what is that name of that piece of music that played roundabout the start of the video? As I’ve been looking all over the place for it.
Hello Sam, interesting and helpful review . I acquired the original Clan in 2009 for my Father an absolute cracker, beautiful locomotive. Alot better than the Britannia, not so good. Thank you Sam i enjoyed this video. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Hey Sam! I don't think you noticed, but it seems like the lamp bracket on the smoke box door is missing or has broken off on your model. Another little bit of a quality problem there.
Hi Sam there was a great deal of interest in the model when I put them in the shop in 2009 but few sales , not surprised there was a long gap between release dates kind regards rog flair-rail
Hi sam I hope you are well? For me the clan class was a great model in my opinion No issues great runner too. I did hear a rumour a couple of years ago that the moulding had cracked after 1st run But like I said it only a rumour. Great review Keep safe ARP
Hi Adi, hope you're feeling better my friend! Yes a great model, can't really fault it... if the tools cracked, they fixed them... as this is perfect as far as moulding goes! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
My favourite livery. BR green with gold coloured lining, and lots of rivets adding to the realism 👌 But strangely enough, the rivets on the running plate look like braille. I wonder if it's for blind train drivers 🤔
I have the same model that I got when they came out last year. Other than a couple small QC issues on mine, it's been a relatively decent model. Haven't serviced it yet, so kinda disappointed to see it has the hardwired basekeeper. While you're right that it definitely isn't worth the nearly £220 RRP, personally, for what you get I think £160 is pretty reasonable. Even if the tooling is nearly 14/15 years old (and I didn't even know that till this review). Cheers
Sam, did you get my email from RUclips about the Class 20 you reviewed? Was it genuine or a Scam? How would this Clan Class benefit from one of your new eBay motors?
That's one I really like. Although not perfect - but what is ?? - it is a robust and nice Express Pacific. Value for money at 160£ retail is reasonable for a 4-6-2. And even if the design dates back, it still looks the part. Nice review Sam but my score is a boiler length higher than the outdated Bachmann Crap you reviewed lately. Regards
Very nice review, Sam. I have to disagree with you about the slow running; that is, though slow running is very important for realism, reverse slow running should be more important because you, more often than not, reverse to connect to the rake of coaches or freight.
@@SamsTrains Just temper your expectations if you do - The tooling dates back over two decades and includes the swivelling pony truck + split ash pan setup rather than the setup featured on the Clan / Britannia / etc which is fixed and has a flange less wheel set fitted to allow the model to get round curves. Not a bad model for its time - but when you consider ‘it’s time’ was over 20 years ago it’s a bit basic by modern standards.
I don't understand any of the innuendos in the last video, I didn't even realise there were innuendos until reading the comments lol. Is that a good thing? 😂
Sorry to tell you but if you look at the smokebox door there is a tiny glue mark where the top lamp iron ought to be. Another reason not to pay full price.
What a beautiful locomotive I really like the looks. The quality leaves to be desired though really shoddy which is disappointing. The screw link couplings are really lovely she looks amazing with them not all modern locos have them. The crawl isn't too great, but it's just about passable for me. Also odd one out is the N15 I believe. Great review Sam 👍
Great review as always! I've thought about getting one, but this cements that I want one :D Are you going to review the Hornby A2/3, since they are on sale at Hattone for 150 quid?
Thankyou. I asked first, because I didn't want to go ahead with it, if Chloe wasn't comfortable with it. I also have a new model railway story video style in the wings, in which you attend the wedding of Thomas the Tank Engine and Spookie. You can cry watching the video, if you want to. Friends are supposed to cry at weddings. Lol.
Im never surprised that seemingly identical chassis can be so different...just a few microns here & there make a difference at this size...& they are not exactly engineered the same
Interesting review thank you. I looked to see if they had another at that price. They didn't. I have the name plate and number for 72010 Hengist, but am not prepared to pay that price. I like it but not that much.
Great review (as always) but who would want a model of probably the least successful Standard locomotive class? Serious question. The Clans didn't even look right, especially when compared to the Britannias. I only ever saw them on family holidays in Scotland but, generally speaking, we 'spotters never rated them back in the 50s.
I'll tell you about a bargain! I recently bought the body and a full tender with wheels etc of a bachmann standard 5 brand new from ebay for.....wait for it... £12.50 !! All I need is a secondhand chassis and it will be a complete loco and I probably wouldn't have spent more than £40-50
It's lovely overall sam the rrp is a bit silly but you can just about forgive it for the price you paid I have a brittania for the last 6 years and it's a very nice runner no issues 👍
It is the n15 from the white Pullman
It is indeed - very well spotted! :D

The centre tender wheels don't appear to always rotate so contact may bne a bit uneven there.
13:49 Has a lamp bracket broken off the smokebox door?
hi sam the class 6 is one of my favourite locos . this model is an adequate representation. but as usual it has issues with the lack of metal running plate and other metal features substituted with plastic . one thing that made me happy with this model is the motor has been changed and thankfully is not the same as the 9F. oh i see that this model is capable to run properly on your layout ! elbow nudge to the hornby person that watches your videos..
Thanks for sharing - yeah it is quite plasticy for over £200 RRP, that's very true! And exactly... funny how some locos run fine, others don't, yet some people conclude it's my layout to blame ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Good review here Sam, definitely a locomotive I have on my list which will go very well with my 7MT Oliver Cromwell and 8P Duke of Gloucester, the one I would like to get is the one that has the yellow axleboxes on the tender which I think is named Clan Stewart.
Thanks a lot David - yes they do look great with the Britannias.... and yeah the yellow axleboxes always look smart!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains we’re a large fan of shapes.
Hi just came across your channel. Very interesting and professional.
One question why is your layout on the floor?
Awesome video Sam's trains
Thanks Brian! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains you're welcome my dear friend
I have a chemistry test in 24 hours that I still haven't revised for. 😟
Btw I did quite well on last week's biology test thanks to you I guess.
Oh dear - maybe you are smart enough to ace it??
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Trains are more important
I'm on Thanksgiving break 🙃
I have tests tomorrow as well
It is good to see a video on perhaps the lesser of the three BR Standard Pacifics.
Glad you were able to sort yours out easily too,
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Excellent video Sam as always. Very nice model as well. Did you hear about the accura 50? Also, did you see my follow up email about the wobbling?
Thanks a lot! Yeah I did - very exciting stuff!! Not yet, I'll go have a look... any good?
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I noticed that the top lamp bracket is missing fron the smokebox door!
I’ve never heard of a clan class and now I want one, just don’t have a model railway!
In that one up close shot, the front two drive wheels do not look like they are meeting the track fully.
Great review. Interesting locomotive
first class review and as standard with you --- a warts and all review excellent
Sam quote “maybe I got lucky with the Clan class” or maybe you were unlucky with the Britannia? Same result but different attitude
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Complicated wheels action is a winner
Another quality issue on yours is the missing lamp iron on top of the smoke box door, there appears to be an empty hole for it to fit in.
Just to give you a good reason to be wanting to kill me : I've bought mine this January for 169 € from Modellbahn Union in Germany... Yes, it's euros, not British pounds, you can get your pitchfork now... 😁😁😁😁😁
As with the actual price/quality ratio, the assembly mishaps are unacceptable.
Ans as for the Britannia class, I am more looking at the Dapol N scale version by now than to the Hornby model, guess why...
so as there toys the only differance is the body shell so you unable to renumber and rename the britania
This is a model I would really like
Yeah! Pretty cool aren't they? :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Does that pony truck move side to side? or is it fixed in place.
Very great review as always Sam, have you considered reviewing any more American locos? I’d love to see it. -Aiden
Oh a clan class, just ordered a BR Flying Scotsman not that long ago, I hope it’s as good as they say it is
I tried to buy this but two damaged ones received then I gave up,as I have two earlier versions
Thanks Sam, a good looking model of a handsome engine.
I thought the cab was a bit bare, with few controls and pipes picked out and here should be a flywheel at that price
Awesome video today Sam beautiful locomotive
I think the low speed performance might have something to do with the large wheels.
Hi sam
I hope you are well?
For me the clan class was a great model in my opinion
No issues great runner too.
I did hear a rumour a couple of years ago that the moulding had cracked after 1st run
But like I said it only a rumour.
Great review
Keep safe ARP
Hi Adi, hope you're feeling better my friend! Yes a great model, can't really fault it... if the tools cracked, they fixed them... as this is perfect as far as moulding goes!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
My favourite livery. BR green with gold coloured lining, and lots of rivets adding to the realism 👌
But strangely enough, the rivets on the running plate look like braille. I wonder if it's for blind train drivers 🤔
I can see why Robin - very smart indeed... amazing looking model! I wonder if there's a message there?!?
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains It probably says If you're here, you're going the wrong way. The cab is over there :-)
I have the same model that I got when they came out last year.
Cheers
Has anyone done the unique 8P 71000 Duke of Gloucester ?
Yes Hornby have a couple of years ago
Do you think you could review some older locomotives like the ones you restore in salvage or scrap (rivarossi or older tri Ang models?)
That clan class is amazing hornby!
It sure does look great!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey sam are you going the Warley railway show tomorrow (26 November)
I have a triang brittannia very similar b eautifull
Please Can you Review The Hornby Rebuilt Battle of Britain, that’s the Only bullied Pacific you’re still yet to Review
I agree - I will do that one day! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam I was wondering if you could re-review the Hornby Peckett B2
I think I saw the oddball standard 4 class
Oh and a black five
I don't understand any of the innuendos in the last video, I didn't even realise there were innuendos until reading the comments lol. Is that a good thing? 😂
haha no problem - yes your innocence is a good thing!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I agree - beautiful indeed! There are a few quality issues to be sure, but we've seen worse! Great detail for sure!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think their should be a fan art session
Great review as always! I've thought about getting one, but this cements that I want one :D
Are you going to review the Hornby A2/3, since they are on sale at Hattone for 150 quid?
Ooh sounds good!! That's an interesting idea actually - I hadn't considered that!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Lol.
Im never surprised that seemingly identical chassis can be so different...just a few microns here & there make a difference at this size...& they are not exactly engineered the same
Hola buenas tardes muchas gracias por subir el video abrazo grande
Thanks for your comment Miguel! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
A great model and a great value... if this was 1997 and it was 139P.
A clan class? I guess I’ll need one of those for my collection, to go along with my model of clan line
£12.50 !!
All I need is a secondhand chassis and it will be a complete loco and I probably wouldn't have spent more than £40-50
Missing smokebox door lamp iron
It's lovely overall sam the rrp is a bit silly but you can just about forgive it for the price you paid I have a brittania for the last 6 years and it's a very nice runner no issues 👍
Solid locomotive with nice details except for the glue marks in some places.
Hi Sam, Nice review, As most of Hornby s things look good at a distance, (perhaps they got new monkeys in on the assembly line) All the best Brian 😃
