  • Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf combines the teachings of the Qur’an, the stories of Rumi, and the examples of Muhammad and Jesus, to demonstrate that only one obstacle stands between each of us and absolute compassion - ourselves.

Really excellent speech, managed to captivate me .. I was listening for every single word .. He is very calm and clear addressing beautiful thoughts that stress on compassion and selflessness.

The words of true wisdom are not bound by any religion or culture, those who think that wisdom that came from one religion is for that religion, then he is nothing but a fool who threw away diamond for a rock.

@@CoolCat6131 I like this comment, but it also takes away from the point. If you want to be more pc then I suppose you can say "a fool who threw away more wisdow for less wisdom"...but it doesn't sound as catchy haha.

I think the idea of a soul is just the ego trying to define itself, to better the mask, the illusion. And if you think otherwise, how can you distinguish what is true and what is just your ego that's muttering? Because saying 'I have a soul' could very well be an egoistic statement.
For me any self definition is the ego talking, trying to grasp reality and have firm ground to stand on. Anything said is a part of that mask.
But then there's the question of what lies beneath the ego?
Who is it that sees the ego?
    Who am I?
And that's..... the wrong question. Because any answer just builds up the illusion of self.
When you understand that, and you see that there's nothing you can do about it, that anything you try is a trap that sends you back in the mess you started with, you find peace.
You stop trying to fix yourself, because there's nothing to fix. You accept the game of life and take the opportunity to have fun with it. Fears leave and life is fun. A game of hide and seek. Good and bad go together and every moment carries the same importance. Because there is only this moment.

Compassion is born of the ego, from your ideas of what 'good' and 'evil' actually are. It means 'suffer with', and it is not what we must have, for that is merely empathy. Compassion is what leads to opinions, and opinions lead to conflict. Abject truth with regard to causality, cost, and consequence, in combination with treating others as you want to be treated, are the only things we need.

This speech seemed to compete with today's trends like "Be Yourself" or "Do what you want to do."
Should we believe the same GOD together for making the perfect world? Should we be modest?
    I don't think so.

The knowledge of truth is within every human being... that's why Islam prohibit all things harmful to the human consciousness i.e. drugs, intoxicants

What you said actually occurred to me recently, why do people of certain faiths abstain from certain food, items etc and why they fast.
The problem is it's all too often lost in all the religious rhetoric and piety but the intentions are nevertheless good

Rumi was not a muslim. Rumi has gone above the religions. He was searching for the source. Every esoteric person is above the religions.
