First time I ever heard a Go Go beat had to have been '85 or '86. I lived in the back woods of West Virginia. My elementary school class went to DC for a school trip, got off the bus, made our way to the Smithsonian museum and right there on the street were two or three black cats banging out that Go Go beat on empty five gallon paint buckets, old metal coffee cans; pretty much anything that could be used as a percussion instrument. Most all the other school kids were laughing at these dudes. But, even at that age, my white bread, country fried ass was completely hooked! I actually got separated from the rest of the group because that sh*t put me in a trance! Long story short, I went hungry that day cuz I gave all my lunch money to those amazing street musicians. In return, I gained mad respect for those with that kind of raw talent, a deeper appreciation of people; no matter their sex, color or upbringing. Fast forward through the nineties when things really got poppin' Go Go was being played on all the DC radio stations and those same kids who were laughing at those cats were now blasting Sardines and DJ Kool (Aahaaa Aahaaa Aahaa - G.Dmn!) That five minutes in DC with a Go Go beat that drowned out the noise of rush hour traffic and everything else in the world for that moment changed my life in such a positive way. So much so that thirty plus years later, I'm boring you all with my story. But, seems I'm not the only one here with flashbacks and memories brought on by these songs. And, that's what it's all about!
Tony Custer - Great knowledge and instinct to music. A lot of people probably don't recognize DJ Kool as go go but classify him as rap. Nope, go go, just like Trouble Funk mixed in with hip hop with their pump me up and drop the bomb. Good ear.
D.C. for life. its all where GoGo started. i grew up on M.L. King JR Ave. 1979 until i moved after i turned 25 in 1995 those were the times. i wish i could go back to the old days. i was one of two of the white people let in d.c. lol but it was different then. i dont care how old i get gogo is in my soul and so is d.c. Hey people!! Remember Chuck Brown! Chuck started the Washington, DC sound. So every time you hear groups like Junk Yard, Rare Essence (R E), Hucubucks, Northeast Groovers (NEG) and more bands. You hear DC hip-hip (rap) and fushion African beats. You definitely hear Chuck! RIP Chuck Brown! May Chuck love on through that DC sound he started many years ago!
Can’t tell you how many times the radio would play this song back in my childhood! Definitely was our anthem..I remember the radio would crank this joint early in the morning lol

You aren't kidding! If only we could go back for a quick visit.... wonder if there's a "build your own time machine" video on here somewhere lol. If not, I suppose we'll just have to ride that Go Go beat and let the music transport us. Stay blessed and thanks for the memories of the memories
