There’s more to this story. Kurt had been bashing GNR, specifically Axl, in the press pretty much from the time Nirvana hit it big. Axl was actually a huge fan of theirs. He wanted Nirvana to open up for GNR/Metallica but they of course declined. He’d also asked Nirvana to play his thirtieth birthday party, again they turned it down.

GNR were a strange band. They didn’t fit in with the glam scene, but they didn’t fit into the grunge scene either. They were a transitionary band, bridging the gap between the over the top, slick and saccharine 80s and the bleak, angry 90s. I think Axl was probably smart enough to realise he was being made to look like a silly, preening primadonna… after years of crafting a persona of ‘raw authenticity’, Nirvana came along and made GN’R look like a dated dinosaur band. He wasn’t smart enough to demonstrate a bit of humility, accept the changes, and have a bit of a sense of humour about himself. He lacked the self-deprecating, sardonic wit of the guys in Nirvana, and was made to look even sillier when he resorted to clumsy threats of violence. It probably really messed him up. In his head, he was the man bringing Rock N’ Roll back to the voiceless majority, a working class hero giving the finger to the ‘system’.. when actually, that role was destined for Kurt. I love GNR, but I do wonder how they feel as men approaching (or in) their sixties, all those years past… probably wondering how they could’ve done things differently… weird. Maybe being that chaotic is what made them special.

Its bizzare, but they were both jealous of each other.
Axl always had a love hate relationship with the fans, and constantly walked off stage or didnt turn up for gigs because he felt so much pressure, but still wanted and enjoyed the fame. Where Kurt could take it or leave it.

@@cardbored_ Pardise City IS good, but no need to say Nirvana sucked. Both were amazing, I wish Kurt would have been a little more open to GNR, but the whole feud was pointless

I totally agree with Krist. The packaged rebellion-Harley Davidson-piano orchestra thing. It’s absurd. Guns is a terrible band with no integrity. Racists and Homophobes. To heck with them! To heck I say!

I mean nirvana were signed to the same label as gnr, so calling them out for being corporate is kinda absurde , nirvana were playing the rock stars too , just in their own way . At least gnr didn’t clame to be the Jesus Christ of the music industry, Kurt thought they were this kinda of edgy rebel youth , they were attending same awards as them and being part of the whole circus.

I feel bad for Slash, he seems like the only cool one out of that band, probably the reason he had Grohl play on his solo album. Axl is an embarassment still to this day.

It’s funny none of us back in the day even knew or cared about “corporate rock bands”. I, myself just liked to rock out. All this petty feud stuff I was oblivious to. When you are 16, you have no idea. Especially in 1992 with no social media. It’s all dumb in my opinion.

Ps. Courtney was a loud mouth instigator and she didn’t know when to keep her mouth shut anyway. Never liked her.

Axl lives, Kurt takes the cowards way out from making songs than could be played by an 8th grader. Congrats on then whoa is me silver salad. 😬
