45 gallon stocking options? :) Hopefully getting a 45 soon!
I started off with a small 5 gallon tank with 3 guppies and an african frog and I fell in love with the hobby. Like obsessed lol. Im trying to convince my gf to let me get a 55 gallon lol
Welcome to a community were everyone else is the same! Haha
Great video, I’m happy that you included goldfish in the list. I keep goldfish in my bedroom, and they are the best thing to watch before going to sleep.
They are so silly!
Ahhh, perfect timing!! I just invested in a 55 gal. Great suggestions...great video...as always! Thank you!!
Very coo!l Have fun setting it up!
Just ordered a 55 gallon as my first big tank! Can't wait
Very cool!
I love geophargus fish.
I love my 55 my guys are just chillin and vibin with eachother
Great video.Keep up the good work.I just bought my own 55 gallon and have planted the entire thing with dwarf hairgrass and used a simple aquas cape using river rock.
I bet that looks cool!
I’ve taken your advice and will be getting a few Electric Blue Acaras for one of my 55 gallon tanks. Thanks for taking the time to educate us about some not so common fish.
Dan Butts appreciate you watching!
Beautiful find ❤
Great ideas, thanks.
Those are some beautiful fish i just started my tank about a month ago. There is no place close to me well sell fish like those in the video. Thank you for sharing
Good luck with the new tank!
8:00
So beautiful fish. I love them
Thank you!
I took your advice and got six Geophagus Tapajos and three Electric Blue Acaras. I’m loven em!!! Absolutely beautiful fish and fun to watch. Thank you for the work you put in to your videos. I live in South Central Wisconsin. Hopefully I can make it to one of the aquatic seminars and shows in Milwaukee or Chicago. I’m 63 and have a few physical problems. One is chronic pain so it make traveling not so fun. But through you and others like you I get to see these places through your videos. Thank you and God bless!!!
Dan Butts that’s awesome! Hope you enjoy them!
Prime Time Aquatics without a doubt:)
Currently have a 55 with angelfish, dwarf gouramis, platys, corydoras, nerite snails and a bristlenose pleco. Its a good combo that provides action on every level of the tank and they get along really well.
Definitely a nice combo for that size tank.
Nice job Jason! Great video 👍. I have kept those Geos before and I have some of your offspring of the Eureka Red. They are doing great. Thanks for sharing.
Good to hear!
A large school of Giant Danios would look great in a planted 55, especially since they're so active. That same would be true for a lot of medium-sized barbs.
That’s what I’m working on right now. I have a school of a bunch of galaxy Rasboro
Me too I just got my 55 gallon tank and I’m happy
Not to brag about it but I just got my 75 gallon at Petco for 105😎
@@AlejandroHernandez-zt7ut nice!
@@markflopresti thanks!
Nice tanks at the back
Your Geoghagus’ are stunning.
Thank you!
Cool thanks for the video, for me i like to stock up clown loaches with tiger bards veil fin, so their common colors will look fantastic :D
and i also like Discus with angel veil fins as well currently i am having them in my 4ft tank :D
I bred some seriously champion bred Red Headed tapajos year's ago. Awesome fish
Love the video thanks man !!!
Thank you!
Nice very nice!
Great video 👍
Dude, I came here from your pros and cons 55gal vid and I’m overwhelmed (good thing) about how many options you have. So much to think about. Thanks!
Have fun! 😀
Great video thx
And I thought I was happy with my 30 gallon! "Jason posts 55 gallon video idea".....
Me: 🤔
My small LFS store owner: 🤑
That's how you wind up with a room full of tanks. Haha
Same situation lmao tanks everywhere
I bought a 16 gallon and I thought it was big since I was only intending to get a Betta. Now I must resist all the temptations to buy everything.
I've got 100 Gallon. Just saying 😏
I do run an Mbuna 55 gallon myself and while it’s mostly worked in the year I’ve had it running I do agree with your suggestion that a Johanni isn’t the best for a 55 community. My other fish get along just fine though. Listed below here are the fish 2 Female Bumblebee cichlids, 1 male bumblebee, 1 male johanni(who is also my tank boss who mates with all the females), 1 female albino socolofi cichlid, 1 male blue zebra(who my johanni loves picking a fight with), 1 female blue zebra, 1 male red zebra, 1 female red zebra, 2 female labs, 2 male labs, 2 female aruautus cichlids. A bit over stocked I know, I run two 350 penguins and a small magnum canister filter for filtration along with a 550gph powerhead. I may rehome some of these fish down the line and see where it’ll go for there. With my big guy mating all the time I also have fry that live and escape into the rock cracks and they’re thriving haha, great video!
This is a good channel!
Thank you!
Another interesting video keep it up😜
Thank you!
You are amazing brother
Thank you!
Nice fish 🐟
Thank you!
Nice info. I subscribed.
Appreciate you being here!
Just picked up a pair of the EBAcaras. Very nice. They’re in a 40 breeder. Probably no room for the topajos right. I love the Geos too. My first were the Brazilian. Nice job love your videos and the schooling that comes with it.
Thank you! It's tough to say with tapajos and EBA in the same 40 breeder. My first thought is the tapajos might try to bully the EBA, but you never know.
Fun video!
I would only add bigger schools of your smaller tetras!
That can be fun!
Geophagus are beautiful aren't they
Great video as always! I was curious as to where you would recommend getting geophagus from? Thanks
The ones I have actually came from Imperial Tropicals when they brought some to one of the GCCA meetings once.
13 yo here, just got my 55 gallon for $100. It came with an aquaclear 110 and a stand, cant wait till its cycled and i can go get some fish😁
That's a nice deal :-)
Awesome video. Thanks for the inspiration. Been thinking about a tanganyikan set up, but the electric blue acara got my attention. Currently I have a 30g community with an angel fish. Can I put the acara in there?
It might wind up outgrowing a 30. The one I have in my 150 gallon is about 6in, but also very round!
Could you do stocking ideas for a 60 gallon tank? Great video though! You gave me a lot of ideas!
It wouldn't be any different given how close the tanks are in volume. : -)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok, thank you! I love your channel! Keep up the great work!
I just got a 55 gallon tank. I can’t decide between African cichlids or angelfish. I’m leaning towards the angelfish so I can have other fish in there as well. Any advice would be appreciated.
Beautiful fishes, well kept, well taken care off, need a guidance what lights are you using for the Geophagus aquarium. Kindly guide will be very much helpful for me.
That particular tank has a beamswork light, but the vast majority of my tanks have Finnex Stingrays.
Great info, thanks/ By the way where did you obtain that grayish like background with withered tree at? 7:26
Thank you! That tank wasn't mine, but was from a fish store tour I did at Aquatics Unlimited up in Milwaukee. You can get a similar look by using gray or light blue paper. Joanna did that here: ruclips.net/video/p_xx2e7KzbY/видео.html
I can wait for you to get to the 125 gallon (6 feet long) stocking ideas
That one will be fun!
Mmm think i will watch you cause when i move in spring i plan on starting a tank..
Good luck!
I’m thinking about getting a 55 gallon tank and making it a community tank. I want a lot of color and something to grab attention but also very peaceful. I would like to have multiple schools of fish in it as well. I’d really appreciate the recommendations
The highfin mollies ( wild type ) in this video where did they come from?
I’m interested in acquiring several of them. If you could help with that I would greatly appreciate it.
This was a very good video, thank you for posting it.
Those came from either The Fish Factory or Aquatics Unlimited in Milwaukee WI. I'm not sure if they ship, but it's certainly worth a phone call.
I love your channel. I have a 10 gallon planted betta tank, a 15 gallon shell dweller set up waiting on the fish, a 36 gallon bowfront planted community, and a 75 gallon south/central American cichlid set up. And I'm still wondering what to do next lol. I think I'd like a tank with tons of schooling fish, would the 55 be ideal for that? Also would it have to be planted?
That would be cool in a 55 gallon. It doesn't have to have real plants.
Just found a 55 gallon tank on the side of the road. I really like the Acaras
Nice!
How was that not broken lol
Another great video mate personally Id go with brichardi or maybe even pulcher basically same thing different coloring but im biased haha of course I picked a lake tanganyika
I like the pulchers more but didn't have any footage of them. : -)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics lol well if you got the room the guy i got my sumbu dwarf from has pulcher magara for sell I could send you the info if you want
Love the videos Jason! I trust your POV as an educator and need advice. 8 months into the hobby. Just got a 60 gallon, it’s a bit taller than a 55 but relatively the same dimensions. Running an aqua clear 110 in one corner, removed carbon and put in Matrix, and added a pre filter sponge. Other side I have a small sponge filter rated at 40 Gal. It’s running a fish less cycle for now. I was hoping to swing by my stocking ideas and see if it’s feasible or if it’s way too much.
8 Male Dwarf Kamaka Rainbows
2 Male Turquoise Rainbow
2 Male Emerald Rainbows
2 Male Goyder River Rainbows
12 Purple Harlequin Rasboras
8 Dwarf Cory Catfish
1 Electric Blue Acara
1 Geophagus Tapajos
1 Angelfish
The only issue you may have is if the geo and acara decide to run the tank. Neither are particularly aggressive, but you never know for sure how they will interact. Best to buy them both small.
I have always wanted to keep geophagus tapajos. I have a 55 gallon with 35 black neon tetras, do you think it would be ok if I introduced a Geo or would that not work?
That might work - always hard to say for sure regarding them eating black neons, but I have seen the combo work.
I have 4 platys, and a few yoyo loaches what would you recommend as a good centerpiece fish, preferably a somthing bigger
Large can be rough with platys. Maybe electric blue acara?
Hello. So I have a 55 gallon I just got and placed in my bedroom. I'm going with an Asian themed and looking for what types of fish that would work and not be get too big but also not be so small.
For an Asian-themed tank there are many options - take a look at barbs - they might be cool to add to that size tank. Golden Chinese algae eater would be cool as well. A gourami would also be fun.
Hi Jason,
what would you suggest for a 200 gallon planted tank with already present 30x hyphessobrycon erythrostigma, 25x corydoras paleatus and 5x L387?
Greetings from Germany.
Good question. I probably wouldn't do tapajos because they like to dig and would rip up your plants. Geophagus altifrons or Geophagus winemilleri are both stunning fish!
I have a 20 gallon and 2 10 gallons. The 20 is stocked with 1 fancy tail goldfish and 3 guppies. Been tankmates for a couple months now. Was browsing Letgo a day ago and found someone giving away a 55 gallon. I ask to come pick it up and when I got there I got almost $1000 worth of supplies. Now I'm here watching what i should try and stock it with.
What an awesome find!
Errrrrrrrrr I'm so jealous
Hey me again, what kind of rocks are those at 2:40? I want to set up an mbuna tank in my 40 breeder. Thanks!
That is flagstone that I got from a landscaping place.
Great video, in regards to mbuna in a 55. I have a 50 and would love to do some mbuna but, I'm lost as pairing i.e. male vs. Females and what sub breeds work well. You mentioned rusty, lab's etc please help!
Rusty's, Yellow Labs, Saulosi, Red Zebras might work. I would buy them small and let them grow up together. If you do that you won't be able to tell males from females initially. Maybe 5 of each?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you so much, I've been wanting to get into cichlids minus shell dwellers, cribs, and appistos. I have a aqua clear 110, and an eheim 60 gallon canister filter, with a sponge filter as well. Any suggestions per bottom dwellers? I have a 8 year old bristle nose pleco currently. Thank you so much again. I went the rainbow route this last rehaul and they are wonderful fish but I miss the vibrant colors and personality of cichlids.
Bottom dwellers can be tricky. If you get the mbuna small you may be able to add medium sized bristle nose or dwarf petricola. I've done both without issue.
I’m going to pick up a 55 gallon today. Petco got the sale going on starting today
Have fun!
Perfect timing! Just getting ready to stock a 55. How many rainbows? Will they get along with silver dollars? I have 5 grown. How about bristle nose plecos? Thanks
Bristlenose work well in a 55! The rainbows I've had in the past left my silver dollars alone. However, with five full grown silver dollars it might get a little crowed in the middle part of the tank. You could try dwarf neon rainbows? Those would be cool - six or so?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Good idea. My wife saw some yellow labs and really liked them. Would they work? They would be my first African cichlids.
great beard my old fruit . its a magnetizing crop of chin hair , aint got a clue whats in your aquarium the beard is the star of the show here ,, we need to see a vid on grooming and care
Haha. Why thank you!
I just got my 55 from a friend of mine I wanted to put some angelfish and tetras in along with Coreys and planted tank is there anything else I can fit in?
There’s lots of different types of tetras you could try!
Can you mix African and south american chiclids? My last tank was all african chiclids and I want to do something really similar with alot of color any ideas? Thanks
Here is my take - but you have to really careful!
ruclips.net/video/qZ1E8ELYH0E/видео.html
Wonder if you have ever kept Geophagus Heckelii "Albino"? I saw a video of them and thought they looked awesome. I havent kept any Geophagus since I was a kid. Picked up a couple 75G tanks from Petco during the $1 dollar per gallon sale. Was thinking of putting them in one of those. Was wondering what the minimum to keep together in a 75G tank. Then who to keep with them. Like you in the Chicago area so wondering how is our water for them.
I have kept the regular heckelii and like that fish a lot. The albinos look cool too! You could probably do a male with a few females in a tank that size with some medium-sized tetras and cory cats? I haven't found them to be overly aggressive. Mine were in with severum, black skirt tetras, a gourami, anglefish and some BN plecos.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thanks for the reply. Now to find them.
I think cardinal tetras would be an expensive dinner for those geophagus tabajos?
My grandfather recently moved to my town has a 45 gallon tall any ideas on a bigger single fish I could set him up with?
If it's a tall tank an Angel might look nice? Electric Blue Acara might be cool too.
What are the fish that are in with the Cupid cichlids? They look like gold sevs but I think you said Guyana acara (?) which I have not heard of or can find info on...Thanks!
The 20L has Guianacara stergiosi
Would 1 electric blue acara and 1 geophagus heckelli or tapajos would to well? Or would they fight ? Planted 75 gal
Hard to say for sure, but it might work in that setup.
Also could that geofagus second fish go with the red tail shark
Hard to say for sure. I had geos in the 75 gallon with the Red Tail Shark and they left each other alone. I have had other cichlids in the tank and the shark would chase them around and push them into the corners.
The genus for saulosi was changed to Chindongo
What's the best tank mates for the 55 gallon tank,no agression,no fin nipping and get up to 4 inch plus no bigger than 8-10
I would say for a 55 gallon I wouldn't try to bigger then 4" or so. Most larger fish have the capability to show some type of aggression. Best bet might be some Electric Blue Acara. You could do an angelfish with smaller tetras and rasboras too. The least aggressive would be goldfish.
What is the white/pink/blue fish swimming across the centre at 3:20? Good video!
That was an OB peacock hybrid (the result of my Red Empress and Dragon Blood cichlids hybridizing).
Question on Geophagus--Googling, I've seen folks say that they shouldn't be kept in groups smaller than 5 or 6. If they're good on their own, I'd definitely think about adding one to my 55 gallon community tank--already in my 55 are 3 angels, an electric blue acara, 5 pearl gouramis (again--I added 5 because the interwebs said they shouldn't be alone), a dwarf blue gourami, two german blue rams, and a few crabs and snails. Will a fish like a geophagus get lonely in a bustling community tank with no other geophagus in there?
With that stocking I probably wouldn’t add another larger cichlid. It would pro a lot try to compete with other fish for territory.
So I’m setting up my first tank I’m doing the cycling and everything
What would you recommend fish wise for me? Going to a local fish spot but i just want your input before I go their . I just don’t want to get the wrong fish / wrong combo of fish
Keep the fish simple at first. Pick fish that aren't too territorial or aggressive - platies, cory cats, bristlenose plecos, honey gourami, maybe guppies, smaller tetras like neons, emperor tetras, gold tetras, any type of rasbora. Once you learn more you can branch off into other types of fish. It will save you a lot of headaches in the long run.
Prime Time Aquatics thanks a ton I’m new I wanted to avoid any headaches that’s why I wanted to ask you before I got any fish from the store...
any other advice you would give me? I just want to make sure I’m not getting bad advice from my neighbor who has been doing this for a 20 years. He’s the one setting things up and giving me the tank and helping me as much as he can..
Thanks a ton I have watching your videos learning as much as i can.
a few combos for a 55 which would work imo
mbuna tank 6 saulosi, 6 rusty cichlids, 3 synodontis petricola and 1 bristlenose pleco
medium sized community tank
1 electric blue acara, 5 swordtails and 5 boesemani rainbowfish
angelfish tank
pair of angelfish, a bristlenose pleco, 6 lemon tetras, 5 emperor tetras and 4 bronze corydoras
molly tank
20 mollies and a bristlenose pleco
goldfish tank
3 fancy goldfish and a bristlenose pleco
tanganyika tank
3 brichardi, 3 leleupi
let them bred and enjoy a nice colony of unique fish
convict cichlid tank
a pair of convict cichlids
or do a firemouth tank with 2 firemouths and some swordtails or mollies
Hi, have a 55-60 gallon aquarium which South/ central American cichlids would you recommend mix and matching for this tank ( will be upgrading tank to 100 gallons when they outgrow the tank) thanks.
I really like the combo of geophagus and severums for the 100 gallon. You could potentially add angels too. The other fish you could consider are Electric Blue Acaras. I prefer community SA/CA tanks to be on the less aggressive side I guess. : -)
@Prime Time Aquatics
Thanks so much for the quick reply especially on an old video, love your content, keep it up. (:
Do you recommend a maximum of one inch of fish per gallon? I know that is the standard recommendation, but just checking with you since you are so knowledgable. Thank you Jason!
Great question! I generally don't only because stocking levels depend on fish combinations, aggression, activity levels, diet, bioload and other factors.
If you have a 12 gallon tank can you have a foot long fish in it? See it’s makes no sense
Would a 55 gallon work for 3 Angelfish, some schooling fish, and a pleco?
That would be cool!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I think so too. I want it so badly.😣
I love the Leporinus fasciatus. But they are jumpers. Every time I work on there tank one gets picked off the floor.
I had some Leleupi that would do the same thing! Rrrrrrr
great video indeed a 55 gallon have a lot of great stocking ideas because of that 4 foot frame myself I keep brevis cichlids one calvus 1 juli a few giant danios a few small danios and rainbow fish and it works out great!
Nice!
I have a 60 gallon cube that I am trying to decide what to stock with. I was thinking about a small group of pearl gourami. I had thought about anglefish but i was worried about what to do if they paired up and started breeding? should i worry or just go with angels and not worry about it?
I might go with the pearls if you don't want any babies.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics its not babies that bother me... i was worried the breeding pair might get nasty with other tank mates.
i think im going to breed electric blue acara theyre so cool
You will enjoy them! Love those fish.
At 6:28 seconds in the video what were those cichlid fish mixed with the rainbows?
Those are electric blue jack dempseys. I have never had good luck with them - they always either die or are greatly deformed before they ever hit the 4" mark.
I have six angel fish two kissing gouramis and five tiger barbs in my 55 gallon tank
Nice vid..how about 30 gallon tank?
I'll have to think about that one a little. Problem is, the fish in a 20 gallon do well in a 29 and I'm not sure there are a lot of fish that do well in a 29, but not a 20 gallon. : -)
Nice and timely video. Just picked up a 55 that some people were giving away. What do you think of 2 angels/school of rasboras/2 synodontis petri/and some otos or cories? The other idea I had was maybe a CARES species as the centerpiece like XENOTOCA EISENI? What do you think would go well with those?
I have some angels with rasboras and cories right now and really enjoy the combination. The synodontis will probably leave the angles and rasboras alone. I'm not sure how they will interact with the cories though. I might go with one or the other if I were setting up the tank (probably lean towards cories given they are from the same locations as angels). The only issue with the Xenotoca would be temp. They would prefer temps in the low 70s while the other fish would prefer upper 70s. Sounds like you're going to have a fun tank!
just add a comment to it at one time I had some synodontis that were really large probably about six or seven inches and I had some angelfish that were probably about three or four in and believe it or not I started to miss an angel fish once a night could not figure out what was happening until I turn my flashlight on at night and found one of my synodontis eating my slow-moving angelfish so just be careful what they kind of synodontis you get I will stay closer to the small size ones
Prime Time Aquatics Thank You!
markie mark very helpful thanks
Appreciate you sharing your personal experience!
your recommendation seems really understocked for a fancy style goldfish, I would consider 4 a good amount of stocking for that size. Although no complaints really, bigger is always better.
Are those a fresh water fish
Can I do one green terror in a 55g?
If that we’re the only fish - sure
Do you think a Geophagus tapajos would work out in a 40 gallon breeder with Bolivian rams?
I had Bolivian Rams chase a large Heckelii relentlessly in a 75 gallon one time. Haha. My guess is it probably would not work?
My dream fish are the red headed tapajos. I would like to get have 2 female and 1 male in a 65 gallon tank. However, you talked about the importance of surface area. The 65 gallon is only 36" long.. This is an aqueon 65 gallon ensemble. Dimensions are 36 3/8" x 18 3/8" x 25". Would it be possible? If not permanently maybe for a year or two? Thanks for the videos. Any advice would be appreciated.
I might just do a single pair in that size tank?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks so much for replying and all the education you share!! Highly appreciated
2 oscar, 1 green terror =) In 48 gallon =) My best tank!
can you make a stocking idea video for 100+ gallon tanks? i just bought a 115 gallon and i have no clue what to put in it please help me 🥺
Those will be coming soon! : -)
What was the name of the fish you show in the same tank as the Biotodoma Cupido ?? Can’t catch it on the video
I believe they are gold severums.
Nice video, thanks.
8:37 Could you please tell me the name of the fish with the red and black body stripes, yellow tips on tail(bottom right)?
Thank you.
That’s a roseline shark - great fish!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Awesome, thank you! Great channel btw, I'm learning a lot :)
What is that fish with the red stripe and scissor tail with yellow stripes at 8:35?
That is a roseline shark.
Is a 55g big enough for a red tail shark
Depends on what else is in there. They often start out ok and get meaner as they age.
Can i keep 1 geophagus tapajos with 2 blue acaras and 3 or so Synodontis petricola in a 125x40x40 (53 gallon) aquarium?
Ps. I have some goeramis, so can i keep them also in that ?
Hard to say for sure. Just depends on the individual fish. If I were trying it I would want to have a back-up plan just in case.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics i change my mind to 2 geophagus and rest the same
@@PrimeTimeAquatics what would you say is a Back up plan?
Im going to be starting either a 175g or 250g. I definitely want it fully planted, and im thinking about all nano fish. Id like to create 2 or 3 large schools of nano fish. Any suggestions? Keeping in mind that Houston TX water is very hard. Then perhaps a suggestion on 1 larger centerpiece fish that is super peaceful and not go after the nano fish.
Danios, dwarf rainbowfish, black neons, white clouds?
@PrimeTimeAquatics oh that sounds great. White clouds in particular add a touch of sophistication, and black neons are very striking against green plants. Thank you
