Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have watched it a few times and now feel ready to give it a try. I am a big fan of Stitches by Julia. You are truly generous in sharing the many, many 'how to's' that you do. I wish you continued creativity and the warmth of knowing that you are greatly admired and appreciated. 💐❣️
I have a wonderful embroidery machine that I love, but on these projects the hand stitching gives it a beautiful, quirky look! Thanks for all your projects and ideas.
This is something I have yet to do Julia ! I am always 'too busy' or something else... but its something I want to do ! I will maybe this year then, thanks for sharing.
Hi Lovely Julia thank you so much for this tutorial, it really helped seeing it in real time. My goal next year is to try and write using my machine. I must admit it is still a bit of a struggle doing free motion only because I don’t practice enough so I really have to pay attention to this. It is always a treat seeing your vlog pop up Julia. Next week I am travelling to the Harrogate Knitting and Stitching show and have treated myself to a four day ticket. I have booked quite a few workshops including two with Wendy Dolan who is very famous for free motion landscapes so I am thrilled to have a place on these as she gets booked up very quickly. Harrogate is in Yorkshire so hopefully I can include a trip to the famous Betty’s Tearooms so I will think of you Julia when I am enjoying a cup of tea. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving to everyone in the USA, all my love to you Julia as always xxxxxxx🙋🏻😘❤️
Hi Julia, thanks so much for sharing this. Your speed looks fairly fast but with your experience it probably comes natural to you. Now that I see it in real time too I can see that you don't cut your stitches in between words. I had wondered if you stopped and cut and then proceed with stitching. I would definitely need to practice this a lot. Thanks again - Cindy
Just found your channel; I love it. Recently returned from a quilting retreat and accidentally learned to free motion and now I’m hooked. So glad to see all the possibilities I can try? Thank you for all the details it is very helpful!
Hi, I mainly use Coat and Clark thread. Make sure there isn't any burrs on your throat plate that may catch on your thread. Also that your needle is new. Sometimes if my tension is too tight I will also have breakage. Hope this helps. Julia
Hi Betty, It does take practice. Is your tension off? I think the hardest part it getting the movement down. Keep at it. The skies the limit once you get it!
Betty, I was told you need to go through 30 bobbins before you "get" it. After 6 I feel I'm getting better so it really just takes practice. Don't give up!
Julie, I just found you today and have been watching all of your videos!! I've really struggled with FM and also writing with it. The idea of those pens is such a good idea. Also, I found using bobbin thread in my bobbin seems to work so well in my Juki for even just stitching so I was glad to see you also like it. Anyway, really have enjoyed your videos and all of your inspiration. Thanks.
Hi Lynda, I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos. What's happening when you FM? Is it your tension? Motion? Some say that getting the motion down is the hardest part. It takes eye hand coordination - practice, practice. Once you get it- it's so fun. I really like using the bobbin thread. It makes the stitches lay smoother- especially heavier decorative stitches. Thanks for watching! Julia
Julia, I have found that FM with my Juki is much easier than with my Brother. In fact, when I went in this summer to test drive a Juki, I took fabric with me and did some FM. One of the other sales ladies came over and said, "Wow, you are really good at FM." I told her it wasn't me, it was the Juki. And my stitches were perfect, and as you said it's all about practice. Someone said you need to go through 30 bobbins to get the hang of it. I've been through 6! Also, I am looking for that perfect stitch. I noticed when you do it, and you go back and forth over the stitches, they aren't going to be "perfect" or perfect looking but more a line. As I said, I was glad you mentioned the bobbin thread because that has been what has really improved my FM. Your videos have inspired me to just quit worrying about the perfect. I got my pens so I'll be playing with writing this week. Again. thanks.
Thx to you I got my daring foot on and tried some doodles on fabric.....this video came at the perfect time cause I was wonder how I could practice without using the batting. Even with batting and my foot down it still doesn't look like it fits as tight as your seems to sew fine as far as I can tell. Have you ever done sasiko stitching? Also I thought of you and your love for denim with all the wonderful project on pininterest that are being done hippie style with denim. Thx for all the inspiration!!!!!
Hi, Free motion takes practice- but it can be so fun! I have not tried sasiko stitching but I want to try. I'm really intrigued. I love how it can be added to applique designs. I love all the hippie/boho items made from denim. Yeah for Pinterest!
Hi, I would keep my tension the same as normal sewing and the stitch length is at 0. You may have to use a tear-away stabilizer on the back for keep your stitches from puckering. This can be removed after the sewing.
Hi, My foot does not meet the fabric it rests above it. (approximately 1/8- 1/4") When your foot is lowered, you should be able to freely move your fabric. Some free-motion feet have a screw on the top that can be adjusted up or down. Hope this helps, Julia
Thanks for getting back to me. I raised it up like you said. This is going to take some serious practice, you make this look so easy. Right now I’m out of control and all over the place. But I’m going to keep trying.
Hi Brenda, a practice tip is to sew on paper without thread. You can draw shapes on the paper and try to sew on the lines. It takes practice but once you get the movement down it becomes easier.
Hi Mary, I pull my bobbin thread up only if I'm doing a project that the back shows like a quilt. Otherwise, I do a back and forth wiggle motion to tie the thread- similar to back stitching on a seam.
Hi Carrie, The Frixion pens were not designed for fabric but many of us sewers use them. I always test on a scrap first. I have never had a problem with them on light colored fabric however on some dark colors they can remove some of the dye leaving white marks. I usually use them on muslin or white cotton. Hope this helps, Julia

Hi Jean, It's been such a blast! And really not that hard. Hope you have a chance to give it a go. Julia
Thank You. This is exactly what I was looking for ❤️🦋
So glad I could help! Happy stitching
Hi Julia, I love that "sewing machine music" you play. :-)
Me too! It's happy!
Exactly!
Great tutorial thanks.

Hi Melissa, You will be hooked for life! FM stitching opens up so many opportunities. Have fun and thanks for watching! Julia
Can't wait to try this.
Great tutorial, Julia!
It looks great. Thanks for the demonstration.
As always a great video and very helpful. What thread do you recommend for free motion work. The one I’m using keeps breaking!?

Oh. Love your channel!

Thanks Julia, it helps to see in real time for this short video. You must have many hours of practice. Happy thanksgiving.

If I want to use for garments.. What can be stitch length and tension... And how to do without hoop and batting.?
Hi, I would keep my tension the same as normal sewing and the stitch length is at 0. You may have to use a tear-away stabilizer on the back for keep your stitches from puckering. This can be removed after the sewing.
Hi. Can I lower my foot somehow. It doesn’t really seem to meet the fabric. It’s a open toe with a spring. Thanks brenda

@@stitchesbyjulia hi Julia. Thank you once again. Today I’m going to practice on paper. I appreciate you taking the time to help.
Thank Goodness for your tutorial library. Keep me off the streets during the pandemic. Safe and ???Sound? 7/7/2020
What stitch length and tension do you use please?
Hi, The stitch length is "0". You do all the moving. I usually do not adjust the tension unless needed. Thanks for watching!
Are you pulling up the bobbin thread before you start stitching?
Hi Mary, I pull my bobbin thread up only if I'm doing a project that the back shows like a quilt. Otherwise, I do a back and forth wiggle motion to tie the thread- similar to back stitching on a seam.
👍❤️ you
Are all Frixion gel pens heat removable? I follow your link to Amazon but it doesn't say heat removable.

Thank you for your quick response. I ordered some and love them too.
Love the way you start your tutorials by wiggling your fingers, cute
Thank you for slowing this so I can watch closely....
What kind of pen is this? I really need to know 😉
Hi Lindsey, They are Pilot Frixion pens.
@@stitchesbyjulia thanks for your reply! Happy Thanksgiving!!!
