Great video and sound advice. I’d also suggest that using streaming services to check that you actually like the music is worthwhile. An album can sound great, but if you don’t really like the music it can stay on your shelf! I have also come across some Tom Petty album reissues from 2016 mastered by Chris Bellman and they sound great too and less than £20. As others have said Speakers Corner label has never let me down either especially Lou Reed Transformer...brilliant
Two of my favourite recent picks ups were both recorded at Carnegie Hall, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. They sound fantastic, amazing artists and their instruments performing live.
Great advice per usual. I bought Donald Byrd and Bobbi Humphrey blue note classics after watching your video. Bloody hell they are amazing. Only for you I would’ve passed on them. You’re my vinyl guru.

I'm glad that you made this video - I feel it was a bit overdue, but I'm glad it's out there. Further to the points you made - I'd like to hear explicit comments along the lines of which labels actively, i.e. aggressively, promoting re-issues: Blue Note, Verve, Impulse, Savoy, CTS, ECM, etc. as I feel it would have been of benefit to me earlier this past year as I grappled with the subject. I have a suspicion many others returning to vinyl purchases would benefit. Many of your videos are release specific and you speak of the label, but it's not always apparent to a newcomer the quantity of legacy releases made available or what to keep your ears open for.
Cool video; definitely need a t-shirt now that says “Don’t feed the flippers.” And Zappa is amazing. I think I’ve bought three copies of “Hot Rats” over the years, but “Joe’s Garage” is an essential.
Entire Neil Young catalogue is great. "Zuma" and "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" strike me as the best two all-around in the series. There is also "Live at the Cellar Door" from Performance series which is incredibly well-recorded!
Hi Michael, would you consider putting the album/artist names? Also, thank you for your channel. I really have enjoyed them over the past year. Nice to see you are noticed by Chad Kassem too.
a long time ago a friend of my parents made me a cassette tape recording of the Zappa-Joes Garage. he had a Linn LP12, Troika,Ekos and recorded the album to his Sony pro walkman (WMD-6) onto a TDK SA. I still have the tape and it was my introduction to Zappa. It plays great on my old Denon drm44hx machine / Naim Audio stuff :-)
I agree 100% on the series you mentioned and would add, there are some newer albums on vinyl with audiophile attention to detail which aren't rare and sound amazing. And it is very difficult and expensive to go chasing titles "backwards" in the secondary market. Gotta develop your system based on genres and decades you like. My system for reissues: Watch this channel, verify pressing quality, then listen on Tidal, confirm it's music I like, and buy accordingly...it has saved me a ton of dough! (and cost me plenty too) My system overall: used records in stores (with a grail just one flip away!), Discogs for specific pressings not flipper titles, with Vinyl Me Please for new-to-me classics, and the good reissues buy online and try to beat the rush!
I think production has gotten a lot better since last year. Chad Kassem mentioned that they only pressed 20,000 of the Love Supreme initially last year and pressed 25,000 of the recent Ella Swinging Christmas, despite being a much less desirable title
Another great video. After watching it I purchased the Jaar album 2Lp on a whim. Really excited to explore this genre of music further. If you have other audiophile recommendations in the genre for newbies, would love it if you shared some.
As always an excellent video, very useful and lots of wisdom !! If I can be so bold to add the Jimi Hendrix albums released by his trust to your list of artist.
Timely video. With so many records at crazy prices, I can't buy too many, deciding to just stream them instead. But yes, I do love to buy a few every year. Thank you! Just hope with the raw vinyl material becoming more available next year maybe prices will or can go down to reasonable levels, or at least stop the crazy increases. If vinyl costs continue to go up, it will keep many 20-somethings from ever considering it as a viable form of music collecting and listening.

Agreed. Classic series and Tone Poet series are amazing. Even more so-Accoustic Sounds. I was waiting for Love Supreme for a good year or so and it was repressed. Bought at regular price. Problem is with labels pressing famous records using poor material source which may put many people off buying vinyl.
Neil Young’s Greatest Hits is actually pressed using one-step method and the results are the sonic equivalent of Sistine Chapel or Alex Ross painting. They are still out there, and are the best sounding Neil Young records outside of Greendale vinyl or Trans on Quiex-II.

Wow, that was a great video, brilliant advice and tips, thank you. Can I add one tip to the pot? If you are doing this on a budget and a lot of us are, then buy the music you like not necessarily the latest LP from a label or artist. I have to like the music I play, there is no point buying music that I don’t like just because it’s the latest release from X or Y, hence I don’t have the latest Joni Mitchell box set because I don’t like her music but the new Billy Joel box is happily sitting in my collection as I just love his music. Happy listening:)
I really would like to order the Kenny Burrell album Midnight Blue. But I’m afraid of too many nonfill issues. What’s your opinion, Michael? Should I wait? Thank you for the very informative video. 👍
Michael, what advice would you give to build up a Beatles collection without breaking the Bank. Do you foresee any new Beatles releases worth buying in 2022?
It's tough being an audiophile and music lover at the same time! I can play one record that sounds effin phenomenal , then play another one that's one of your favorites and it sounds flat and stuffy! It's a big let down for us more than others! That's why I don't play different records back to back anymore! I just buy hoping it'll sound at least decent, which happens I'd say 80% of the time!
Can we get some T shirts and mugs printed that say 'Don't feed the Flippers' They would sell well I think...lol I order my one steps (and more) from 'Music Direct' You pay some import tax but it's still cheaper than the insane prices retailers charge over in the UK. For example - Last two Eagles one steps $125 each plus £55 import duty = £245.00. From the UK = £360.
This video would be much more difficult to make if you were to exclude jazz records. For those people, like me, who don’t ’get’ jazz, the audiophile choice offers much less availability. Thank you once more for making this interesting video.
I think it would have been appropriate to mention Sam's Records - perhaps especially for those of us who live in Europe. here there is good opportunity to for audiophil quality at the fair price without customs and ridiculous charges:)
Hello Michael. Do you know from your experience if the cheapest option possible for shipping from Acoustic Sounds is USD 47? Quite expensive thanks mike
Excellent thoughts and very informative I do think there can be too much of a certain label (tone poets, mofi) I certainly don’t buy them if the music in vanilla Hard to tell in this FOMO audiophile world Where you sometimes must strike before the iron is hot. Joni Mitchell’s upcoming archive releases will be excellent base on what has already came out The AS Verve titles are specatular
Yes, just be patient with the Classic series. No need to pay $100 like I saw people paying for them. I had to wait almost 6 months for “The Sidewinder” and saw people paying upwards of $100 for it. Same thing with some of the Acoustic Sounds series like “A Love Supreme”. No need to pay a lot for it. It’ll get repressed, or at least it was.
I think it is good advice to not look back. There are some MOFI titles I want very badly which are out of print and I refuse to pay $200-$300+ for a single album. It pains me to think some of these albums I will never have, but it is true some of them could be pressed again on super vinyl or whatever new gimmick they invent. That being said, there are also some albums which were pressed a long time ago and likely will never be pressed again because the master tapes are just not useable anymore. Or perhaps MOFI will never be allowed the licensing again. Those are the ones that are most difficult for me.
2 releases I'm looking forward to in 2022... What's Going On by Marvin Gaye (mastered by Kevin Gray I believe), and the 45rpm version of Song Bird by Eva Cassidy.
Please listen to this record: Rão Kyao -Fado Bailado jazz with a beautiful Portuguese guitar ❤️ then tell me what you think of that disc... maybe I'll send you a copy later 😜
There's no way we can "save" money in this hobby. It's a very expensive hobby and getting worst. If my wife knew what I spent in hardware she would sent my to under the bridge with my gear and records a long time ago… and she kind of suspects what I spent in records everymonth, more than the minimum salary in this country for sure. It's too much, I know that. I'm glad you mention the flippers again. Only Chad Kassem seem to think it's a legit business… it's unbeliavable. It's savage capitalism (without any political crap here) at it's worst. By my calculation, Kind of Blue UHQR was purchased by 5-6000 persons. Chad sold out he's happy. It's not the same at all like 25.000 persons, vinyl lovers. I suspect this hobby is not as healty as it looks - marketwise. I feel I butchered the english here, but it's difficult to write in english when things get more complex. 🖖🏻
Also any American Beatles fan who has only heard capital vinyl will be amazed by sound of Parlophone pressings. Who wouldn’t pay 50 to 100 dollars to truly hear the Beatles the way John Paul George Ringo (plus George Martin/Geoff Emmerich) wanted these songs to be heard- there’s a reason they dressed up like butchers-they felt Capital butchered their music in more ways than one.

Cool Martin thx for sharing this
Have the Billy Joel box too it is not audiophile but the music is fantastic and that’s what it is all about 👍
@@dutchcoyote Agree its great listening.
I really would like to order the Kenny Burrell album Midnight Blue. But I’m afraid of too many nonfill issues. What’s your opinion, Michael? Should I wait? Thank you for the very informative video. 👍
I would try it and hope for the best.....
I've bought 10 titles including that one, and they're all clean and flat, no issues.
Michael, what advice would you give to build up a Beatles collection without breaking the Bank.
Do you foresee any new Beatles releases worth buying in 2022?
They have to come to their senses eventually... but they are a hard case :-)
Can we get some T shirts and mugs printed that say 'Don't feed the Flippers' They would sell well I think...lol
I order my one steps (and more) from 'Music Direct' You pay some import tax but it's still cheaper than the insane prices retailers charge over in the UK.
Wait 2 more hours Ron :-)
I think it would have been appropriate to mention Sam's Records - perhaps especially for those of us who live in Europe. here there is good opportunity to for audiophil quality at the fair price without customs and ridiculous charges:)
You are right but no new releases for quite some times kets see what happens
Maybe your good dog really enjoys the jazz releases
Hello Michael. Do you know from your experience if the cheapest option possible for shipping from Acoustic Sounds is USD 47? Quite expensive
thanks
mike
Yes its serious money but if you order more than 1 Album it gets better
More advice - If you have a great sounding version
You don’t always need the remaster
Save that money for something else
Excellent thoughts and very informative
I do think there can be too much of a certain label (tone poets, mofi)
I certainly don’t buy them if the music in vanilla
Hard to tell in this FOMO audiophile world
Where you sometimes must strike before the iron is hot.
Joni Mitchell’s upcoming archive releases will be excellent base on what has already came out
The AS Verve titles are specatular
wonder what is happening with Herbie Hancocks - maiden voyage heard about the bad pressings
What are the sleeves you use for the gatefold records? They cover the whole record when open?
they are from Vinyl Storage Solution
@@Michael45RPM Great product.
Analogue productions with have some stunning new releases, jethru tull 45rpm and looking forward to the announcements.
me too Tony me too... i expect big things!!!!
Do you think there is any chance of the Beatles in mono box set will be repressed? I missed out on it.
Youll never know id say its not impossible anymore
You're not alone, I missed out on that too. Don't know what I was thinking. Just didn't want to spend the money. Wont make that mistake again.
On a separate note, Michael, did you pick up the Dylan mono box set? I assume you most likely did, and it sounds absolutely fantastic.
No i did not pick it up.. happy with the Mofi Monos Nick
Quite interesting Content
I think it is good advice to not look back. There are some MOFI titles I want very badly which are out of print and I refuse to pay $200-$300+ for a single album. It pains me to think some of these albums I will never have, but it is true some of them could be pressed again on super vinyl or whatever new gimmick they invent. That being said, there are also some albums which were pressed a long time ago and likely will never be pressed again because the master tapes are just not useable anymore. Or perhaps MOFI will never be allowed the licensing again. Those are the ones that are most difficult for me.
Are there any good Bill Evans pressing you recommend ?
There are tons of them start with the evans in the Acoustic Sound series .. there will come more
@@Michael45RPM Thank You
Michael you once told you would talk about Tom Waits in your video’s . When Will this happen?
And what about Captain Beefheart.
They come eventually
2 releases I'm looking forward to in 2022... What's Going On by Marvin Gaye (mastered by Kevin Gray I believe), and the 45rpm version of Song Bird by Eva Cassidy.
26 days to go ?
Extra tip: watch the yt-channel of Michael from 45rpm👍😎
Of Course!!! :-)
Please listen to this record: Rão Kyao -Fado Bailado
jazz with a beautiful Portuguese guitar ❤️
then tell me what you think of that disc... maybe I'll send you a copy later 😜
👌
I’m really excited about the Prestige series. I wonder if they’ll be offered as a subscription again.
I dont think so they probably are just back in stock :-)
Streaming is the way, via MQA files! Music on plastic is not sustainable. Expensive in every way. And heavy!
Great video. Great stuff. Even friedrich likes it :-)
:-) hello Sara hope you are good :-)
@@Michael45RPM Hello Michael. I am ok I hope you are good too :-)
