Ive played many, many iterations of the tube screamer. The green maxon is still on my board. It cuts through the mix,but has a warmth that is creamy, yet has some sizzle. It doesn’t lop off all your bottom end like alot of TS pedals do,and it has a mid hump that is right in the sweet spot.
I bought one of these when I was a young sailor in Japan back in 1980. I still have it, along with a Maxon FL-301 flanger and a Maxon D&S distortion and Sustain. My OD-808 has the digital tap switch instead on the analog stomp switch. Maybe that was a Japan only thing…? Anyway, I was very intrigued to find out that these were in fact, the original tube screamers, especially after I looked for one online and found several for sale anywhere from $700 to $1,800!!! Glad I never got rid of it. I still use it frequently with my 25/50 Anniversary Les Paul into my Marshall JCM800.
Hello Jack, great video again! You should try the Maxon OD-820 or VOP-9, it's a high headroom TS and can be used as clean boost. Some says it's the Klon killer!
Gosh, this sounds amazing, I’m wondering if I Should ditch my Nobels ODR mini for something like this to match my Plimsoul. If you can find a Fulltone Plimsoul it’s such a great sounding OD pedal, I’d love to hear what you can do with one!
My goodness you play this pedal so subtle, I just use this pedal for black metal mostly haha😈 But recently found out it can also be really sweet n creamy in different amp/pedal/pickup settings. I'll never sell it
Better? Probably, although I don’t know that it would be so much better as to ditch that one and buy a different one. Ibanez still makes a great TS. I’ve never played the mini but I have a regular 808 and love that one too.
BASS player here, Ibanez in an office business, they deal with producers like MAXON and put their names on the quality gear. Check it on the net, I'm a Japanese retro bass freak......
Hello, I really like all the bluesy sounds you get with the 808. Have you try the 808X (red one) ? Could you still get those excellent bluesy tones with a 808X ? thx for your videos
I have both the green and red maxons. The only differences is the red one is brighter,a little tighter and slightly more gain on tap. Both are great, but overall I prefer the green one-just because it has this natural warmth.
Haha now I understand every Maine accent in every Stephen King book. Ayup. I have a Maxon "Tube Boost". It's cool, like a 9 but with less gain and more headroom for goosing the front end of whatever its hitting. Got a tiny little military-grade NOS tube in there. Think it's a TB-09, from memory. It's about 3 feet away in my "heavy pedals" drawer (weighs a ton) but I just lay down. Ayuh, yup!

Jack, how does Maxon Od808 compare to Sd-1 , what's your two cents?
Thanks

The “OG” overdrive!
Great video Jack

Yes the comparison would be interresting to see on this channel
So basically like an old friend with character. Cool!
I think of Tube Screamers like comfort food. Beef stew and homemade bread.
...with hair 😁
From Leo: Yep, I can work with that one. Green is usually my OD flavor.
I like tube screamers and blues breakers - green and blue. I’m very earthy.
My favourite TS ❤
Jack, what you said about the patina is what a coworker once said bout a car. When a car has 200.000 miles on it you can buy it in the dark 😅

Have one! It’s actually been one of my favorite pedals for 10 years - my wife bought it for me for one of our early anniversaries.
@@JackFossett sounds like you’ve got good pedals AND a great wife! Keep up the sweet tones.
Nice flex! My GAS is out control jack, so much gear so little time
Right? It’s like being a kid in a very expensive candy shop.
Would you class an SD-1 in the "Screamer Like" pedals category?
Yes they’re very similar
Wow you play amazing!
Thank you so much!
Ibanez was the distributor for Maxon outside of Japan. I love my OD808. I will add the OD9 pro+ to my collection someday.

I have the Ibanez mini sounds good to me would this be a better option for the tube Screamer sound there are so many it's brain numbing

I've owned prolly 14 screamers and this is the best hands down.

analog man said the Maxon OD808 is the same circuit as the TS10. Never played one but thats probably why it sounds bit different than the Ibanez 808.
I would trust his word, he's very knowledgable about these things

@@Boogieplex thx you. I got the green one few days ago. an overdrive is really interresting
Nice pedal.

Wicked pissah bub!
When my unit flew out to Iraq we had to stop in Maine first, the airport was all King books and memorabilia and lobster stuff lol.
Funny that you can buy a modern Ibanez Tube Screamer for $120 these days, but one of these old Maxon OD-808’s can sell for as much as $1800.

Sounds like my Ts9
Sounds better than mine
It sounds better than both of mine
