Man of letters, master of the pen, literary beacon of rap. Huge talent. Intangible heritage of French culture. If there was only one reason to learn french it would be to understand the texts of McSolaar. The literary quality of his texts is exceptional. An absolute reference in french rap. MC Solaar can boast of having written strong and mythical lyrics. Many recognize in his writing a certain talent for the handling of words and for poetry. A true magician.

The text is teeming with puns that are difficult to access for a non-French speaker. The new western described by MC Solar is allegorical and talks about what we are experiencing today. One of the pivotal moments of the song : "[...]Consequently, techniques are perfected; the smart card replaces the Remington" [...]
To my knowledge dear Dereck, MC Solar is the first (and only one I think) rapper to have been a member of the jury of the Cannes Film Festival. Because he's recognized for the quality of his texts and his skill at playing with French language.

I won't be adding anything new by saying that MC Solaar's texts have a lot of wordplay and cultural references that would inevitably be lost in translation (even as a native, I'm sure I've missed a few), so I wanted to explain a few of them in case a non French speaker is interested.
    The wind blows in Arizona
An American state where Harry lived precariously/drifted (zoner: slang for living from day to day with an unstable job)
    ...
We say "beware of the gorilla", but beware of Gary Cooper ("Gare au gorille" is a relatively bawdy song by famous singer Georges Brassens (50's, 60's and 70's)
    ...
When the city sleeps, the trains do not whistle (reference to "High Noon", whose French title is literally "The train will wistle three times")
    ...
He enters the bar, orders an Indian (double meaning of Native American and cocktail)
Scalps the head, drinks, puts the glass back down on the counter ("scalp" here is used unconventionally to mean "to remove", and I think the pun works even better in English, since the froth at the top of a beverage is called "head"; "zinc" is a metal, but also used to mean a bar counter)
A 2CV parks, two drunk guys punch each other ("ch" means "horsepower", which is litteraly "horses" in French. A perfect fit for a Western-themed song)
    ...
But Harry in Paris drew the short straw
He is stopped on the beltway in his diligence (by "stopped", what's meant is that the police arrests him; metaphore of a Western vehicle for a normal car)
Then he is put in Fresne so that Fresne slows him down (Fresne is a city that holds one of the biggest French prisons, but is also a homophone with "freine", conjugated form of the verb that means "to put the brakes on, to slow down, to limit")

i think that an american ( someone who don't understand french) reacting to solar is a little of, i will explain, solar is using MANY words plays in his songs that can't be understood by peoples who don't speak habitually french like with his "en arizona ou harris zonna" "zonna" is an argotic well know word that speak of someone that stay in a place for exemple you can stay in a block, in a country, in a town, etc... so "in arizona ou harris zonna" mean more or less "in arizona where harris stayed in" but "arizona" and "harris zona" sound exactly the same in french that was an habit of solar to us this type of words plays and i think it's lost in translation! but well i'm not telling you to not react on solar but just that you will miss all of his "particularity"!

France is the second rap music country after the States!
MC Solar is known to do a particular kind of rap, based on very elegant and subtile lyrics, and systematically avoiding violence in the themes!
He had a serious love affair with Ophelie Winter ( a good female french singer)!
Dereck, you should definitely react to more Gainsbourg, and especially Bonnie and Clyde! (I love BB 's voice, You should also react to BB' s songs). Some more MC Solar also, especially Caroline ! and we're still waiting for Le Mia by I am ! (lol) (same kind of music but more energetic, typical from Marseille, as MC has a very parisian style, more subtile). You should also react to Orelsan, very unic !

So glad you reacted to this masterpiece! Love me some MC Solaar, and this one sure is among his best tunes. The translation doesn’t mean anything since there are tons of play on words that are totally lost in translation. The music sampled from Gainsbourg’s “ Bonnie and Clyde”,- another masterpiece - is indeed what you hear in the beginning, and it’s sampled over and over again.

So, let me just start off by saying that I love your reviews. But, just a word to the wise. In "Gainsberg", the "Gains" is not pronouned like "Gains" in English, but it rhymes with "Hands". So "Handsberg" but replace the "H" with a "G".Otherwise, keep up the great work. So glad to see someone reacting to French music ! Also, in "Brigitte Bardot" the "t" is slient. It's pronounced like "Brigitte Bardo", long O.

    Hello Dereck,
Mc Solaar cites just as many real characters who have existed (Calamity Jane, Sitting Bull) but also others who are creations for film or television (James West for example).
I think in a way he denounces the reality of events and the way Hollywood has falsified history.
It seems to me he also draws a parallel between two eras, that of John Wayne and later what he, therefore, calls "the new westerns", that's to say films such as the series featuring the inspector Harry, whom he quotes in the second part.
It's a bit esoteric, but I think what he ultimately means is that nothing has really changed. We always idealize the strongest and we care little about what happens to the weaker (Cochise, Sitting Bull, etc.).
In my opinion, he castigates the behavior of man and his greed, and the fact that's precisely the most greedy of all who succeed the best shows that we privilege this elitist model of society to the detriment of any other possibility of building a social model fairer. So I think he's attacking the thinking of the Western elite in this rap and that's why this title is called *New Western* (At the beginning of the song it is *The new westerns.* But, at the end of the title it becomes *Le nouveau Western;* The Western - L'Occident in French, therefore).
I'm modifying my comment to clarify (and pay tribute) that we really must not forget the enormous work of *Jimmy Jay* the producer (and scratcher; *Jimmy Jay* is also "a high caliber" when it comes to scratching and djing in France) on the titles of *MC Solaar.*
    That's all folks ...Peace!
I hope you could react on *Carpe Diem Mc Solaar Clip Officiel* ruclips.net/video/WrrqphLuGkc/видео.html

      @@sophiegoarin2903 Bonjour Sophie,

Mc solaar is a master in french rap (poème ?). He has had a national reward by a previous president for his text. I hope I will see your réaction to "Caroline" by Mc Solaar too. It is so sad song. I'm sure you will love it. 😘

Lots of great hits by our poet Mc claude S. Often great instrumentals with great lyrics. This sample was also used in an other tune in a subtle way, adam cohen feat Virginie Ledoyen - happiness

Some of the verses are the French titles of great wester movies.
" la rivière sans retour" : River of no return
"les sept mercenaires" : Magnificent seven

Thanks for that, Mc Solaar is so talented and his lyrics, the way he is using his words and rhymes, perfect usage of the French language. Have you heard / seen his duet with Missy Elliott in All N My Grill, for some reason the video doesn't come up on RUclips, you can only get the audio, but you can find the video on Vimeo.
Also you you could check Sexion d'Assaut ' Avant qu'elle parte' very talented French rap group, they did a lot of songs, the main singer has now gone solo, his name is Gims, he's got a lot of hit songs too. Finally I would also recommend Soprano 'Roule' another very talented rapper/singer. He was part of the French Rap Group Les Psy 4 de La Rime and is now gone solo with a lot of good songs too. 😊

Hi Dereck! Thanks for your react on MC Solaar. This song Nouveau Western (New Western) was released at the end of 1993, taken from his second album "Prose Combat" as a first single, ranked no.4 in TOP 50 and sold 165,000 copies.
The song is a small dedication on the lack of diversity in American cinema.
The music video directed by Stéphane Sednaoui (who worked with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Björk, Youssou N'Dour/Neneh Cherry for "7 Seconds", U2, Alanis Morissette,...) is a long traveling shot that takes Mc Solaar from Paris to the United States was shot in Paris, New-York, Los Angeles and in Arizona.
We hear in the lyrics "Hollywood Bern" a nod to a title of the Public Enemy group "Burn Hollywood Burn" as well as two other figures of US rap: Ice Cube and Big Daddy Kane.
In an interview, he mentioned that he changed clothes several times and adopted a Snoop Doggy Dogg attitude that he liked.
For your NEXT REACT, I recommend you CAROLINE (1992), his BEST SONG taken from his first album, ranked no.4 too and for this second album the song "Obsolète" in 1994.
Thanks for your amazing work our Frenchie American dude. 👍🇫🇷
