Thanks for posting. It brought back memories of travelling up front from Heuston to Athlone one evening in 1986. The driver was a relative, hence the opportunity.
Class video. It's cool to see how much the Irish countryside has changed since then. Housing estates are non-existant and all the manually operated level crossings. Good times!!! :-)
I'm watching this in installments as I'm getting concussion from the brain shake, you must've been crapping yourself in that cab, I know I'd be on my knees doing a novena, after I put on a parachute
Samantha Harris . Yes it was rock and roll in the cab at that time, before the entire network was renewed. Trying to hold a video camera on my shoulder and looking through the view finder amplified the motion as you see in the video. Happy viewing
+scuderia2000 1:09:35 is the point where that derailment occured just outside Claremorris in 1989. Came around the corner and mowed a herd of cattle out of it...
I knew a man who worked on the railway between Claremorris and Ballyhaunis and he always said he'd never get the train to Dublin. After seeing this, I understand what he meant.
Gerry Conmy Very true. But it's a delight to travel it now. The new tracks are great. I live a mile away from the Keelogues level crossing on the Ballina/Manulla line and we could always hear the 'tat-tat, tat-tat' of the train on the old, sectioned line. But now, all you can hear is the rumble of the odd 071 doing timber/container work.
Question: If farmers have cattle grazing in fields next to train tracks are they (the farmers) not supposed to have adequate fencing to stop cattle getting on to the tracks and killed? It’s not rocket science?
2 accident areas on that footage... Knockcroghery where 211 was hauling the 8:25 Dublin to Westport when it derailed at Curry level crossing on Saturday 8th Nov 1997 and another one where a Dublin to Knock pilgrimage train collided with cattle on the line between Ballyhaunis and Claremorris in September, 1989.
6:25 How is Hodson Bay Level Crossing A manual crossing if it was an AHB (Automatic Half Barrier) Crossing in 2009? its now a 4 barrier CCTV Crossing Now.
What did you check it in google maps? Also theres a level crossing before that one which is called barry more its an ahb in the video now its a 4 bareier cctv crossing
I already tried the anti shake process and didn't like it. Travelling in the cab when I made the cab videos you couldn't stand in the cab with all the rocking and rolling caused by poor track conditions and loose bogies and that's the was it was. Nowadays it rock steady. Gerry

The track looks in atrocious condition, actually scary
Another excellent and unique video Gerry! Many thanks for posting. Eamonn
It's no wonder there was a derailment on this line a few years after this was recorded

A siuperb video from 25 years ago when we are all even younger but seriously you can see how Knockcroghery was an accident waiting to happen.
great videos gerry! Many thanks!

dbasq1 . Yes the permanent way was in a poor state then underfunded by government for years. Now the whole system has been relayed.

Must have been the nineties seen as the bypass bridge is completed and in use... the old station on the Roscommon side looks already closed...
What was the drivers name
Thanks fot posting
Many a time I travelled that journey in the 90 s

the track condition is scary for an InterCity route ;)

yes that's where the train derailed.

pretty rocky in that cab
Was this section once double track?
Isochest . Yes between Athlone and Roscommon. Singled in 1929 as a money saving exercise.

That's good to know. So it went from manual to half barrier and finally to 4 barrier. Glad you the video
Gerry
@@gerryconmy Yep lol!
In the video if you look the level crossing it's a half barriers and controlled by approaching signals.
Gerry

I take it this is unused as a passenger line now?Was this not the main line to Ballina,Castlebar,Westport many years ago?
shadrana1 It is still open to mainline passenger and freight trains.
shadrana1 The line never closed. Was relaid a few years ago
