Morality and safety aside lets take time to appreciate all crane operators! They can lift a crib with a sleeping baby inside it and lift it 400 feet in the air, place it and tuck the baby in without even waking the baby up. All that steel and swinging hooks and they are that gentle! Its a level of class and skill that i feel goes largely unnoticed and underappreciated! I can never get anywhere close to that level plus the factor of heights... yeah definitely not for me but MAD respect to all the crane operators!!!!

@foxhollerhomestead I appreciate that very much brotha! I find that operating cranes are just awesome and the more I learn about it the more respect I gain for the operators. I could never do it because me and heights don't get along lmao plus it's true I was born with the curse of diesel in my blood 🤣 I'm a 3rd generation truck driver I love it and hate it and wouldn't have it any other way but I have thought about hauling counter weights and parts for cranes it seems like an awesome gig to get into as soon as I save up to rebuild the motor on my other truck I may look into doing that

I have become buddies with several operators and they allowed me some seats time. I'm eager to learn, that's why I'm watching your videos. Eventhough I won't be using a tower crane.

As a mobile crane operator myself, i find myself in awe when seeing a tower and imagining myself swinging that bad boy but like you said, i do enjoy the travel (in state travel - NJ/NY area) and different location each day where I'm working. I get audiences all the time too like you said where people walking by the work site or in a nearby building and they are recording the crane pick(s) on their phones mesmerized by the crane that I'm running doing its thing. Love being a crane operator. Much respect to you brother 🙏 keep swinging strong

I have to tell you, my friend that I really miss running mobile cranes and the traveling part!
Sitting up in a tower 10 to 16 hours a day is very taxing and you never realize how much so until you can’t just walk out of the cab and take a break for a bit.
Plus, you’re definitely right about showing up to a job site and instantly turning into a rockstar !! lol

But we also have the stress of being responsible for the load and people around the load while we fly it. Tower crane is something ive always wanted to do, but we dont do much of it here in south louisiana. I work for a crane rental company. I personally dont travel a whole bunch which the family likes. IUOE 115 out of Vancouver here! I’m 26 years old and have been running heavy equipment for 5 years. (OE member for 1.5 years) Excavator is my main but I run loader, skid steer etc. as well. Majority of my jobs have been in heavy construction, drilling, and pipeline. Being a woman on site has really increased my burnout the last few years. Seems like each job is worse than the last. I know I don’t have to explain to you the extra challenges that come with being a woman in trades. My spirit has been broken countless times and I feel very discouraged. All I want to do is move dirt, make money and come home safe. But it’s never that easy. After all of the work I’ve put into this career I really don’t want to leave it behind but branching off to something new within the industry has been on my mind. I requested tower crane training today at our local centre. I really pride myself on my lifting/rigging abilities and think it could be a good new challenge and change of scenery. Just as you explain to the audience in this video, it won’t change the mental exhaustion, being trapped in a cab all day and trying not kill anyone. I’m no stranger to swinging for 10-12 hours straight trying to eat a sandwich and throwing it in your lap in between loading trucks and whatnot. but I’m at a crossroads. I love being in my seat. Firing up my hoe in the morning is one of the best feelings. But the politics, constant scrutiny, competition and favouritism have got me down bad. The grass isn’t always greener (as we all learn) I don’t think I’m so much asking for any advice as much sharing my experience..I know starting a crane apprenticeship would just be another beast to conquer. But maybe getting out of the dirt world and up into the sky could be a new adventure. Thanks for any feedback :)
    Jess

      @foxhollerhomestead  Год назад +4

      Hey there Jess,
First off let me thank you for sharing this with me!
I am fully aware of the struggles women face when it concerns being in this industry, and I commend each and everyone of you that works your asses off to get to where you are, and continues to do what you do to make things right regardless of the struggles.
If half of the entitled men would put forth the effort…!!
What I can say is that you follow your dream and don’t ever ever ever let anybody stop you!!! Others ignorance is not your issue. At the end of the day the only one you can count on is yourself and never forget that.
Sounds to me that you would do great in the crane industry and no it’s not easy, nothing ever worth anything should be easy…. But with your motivation behind you, nothing can stop you!! Tower crane is a whole different world than dirt.
I ran every piece of equipment on the ground for most of my career, and I love like you said, jumping up in a hoe and just digging. Working mainline or underground utilities, you either have it or you don’t.
The benefits to Tower crane are we are able to sit up in our own cab, and for the most part each and every trade networks on the ground relies on us 100%. Not too many people out there are willing to talk shit to the sky hermit!! 😂
So like I said, you keep on doing what you’re doing and if towers is what you want to get into than you do that and you do it 100%! Nothing but love and blessings to you and your family, my friend! 🙏❤️🏗️🏗️❤️🙏
PS If guys are giving you shit, it’s because you won’t give them the time of day or you’re better than them in a seat or both!!! Keep doing exactly what you’re doing. Don’t change for nothing.
OE proud!! Sorry for typos, I’m voice texting. Lol

One of the things that you will recognize about Tower crane ‘s or cranes in general compared to the dirt side is that there is going to be a little more sophistication… from my experience, getting into cranes, requires a lot of education and schooling among many other aspects, which puts the operator on a different level of maturity. We’re still a bunch of hard asses but a level of respect is a lot different. Keep me posted and good luck on your journey!! my wife and I are huge Fleetwood Mac fans, so that’s what kind of day is! I worked on many big projects with a lot of tower and mobile cranes, i got to know many crane crews as we need a lot of lifts on the job. I found the guys fun to work with even giving the dogman a hand landing a load or hooking up. What i do regret is not going for a dogman's ticket then moving on to a crane ticket while i had a chance, probably wouldn't be as stiff and sore now😂 Stay in the industry as long as you can because i miss the comradeship. So many questions: I"m on a Potain 109, the base is set in concrete and there's a ground rod. What's the point or good of the grounding rod when the entire base of the crane is in the ground? What do I do if lightening is in the forecast? What if I see lightening nearby? What if I'm caught in the storm? Is there a safe way to climb down? Rubber boots and gloves maybe? I'd really appreciate it. Gotta run. Thanks so much.

Hey there, my friend I apologize for taking so long to get back at you, but love you again by saying yes you are safe in the cab!
It actually be extremely detrimental for you to get out of the cab during a lightning storm!
As far as lightning being in the forecast, I will completely shut the green down and put it in wind vane when lightning is detected 10 miles within my radius.
Just make sure to continue monitoring the lightning strikes and wait a full half hour after the last strike has been 10 miles or more away from you.
I also will make an announcement over the radio for everyone to please stay away from the crane as the number one deaths that occurred with cranes are electrocution to individuals on the ground.
Hope this helps out my friend and many blessings to you!!

They definitely need to spend a couple years under the hook along with oiling and directing/dismantling, etc.. all of these things will go in line with appreciating and understanding what it’s like to sit up here.

      Sincerely, thank you!
So once the crane comes down, the concrete pad and the feet that the tower attaches to actually get covered with more concrete and becomes a part of the foundation of the building!

The link that I just included Will help answer a lot of the questions that you may have in concerns to getting certified as a crane operator.
Granted, there are a lot of steps beyond getting a certified that you will go through but honestly at the end of the day you have to decide if this is something you’re willing to put anything and everything into.
      It’s a lifelong career not just a part-time job…
There are a lot of individuals that just wanna make the money and don’t recognize the fact that it takes an immense amount of effort and time to get to that point. if you’re willing to recognize and follow the steps, you’re on your mission to become what it takes to become a crane operator

As far as the time it takes to get these certifications along with your commercial drivers license, it will take quite a bit longer than 5 to 7 days, but at least this will give you an idea of where to start!

Mobile crane pros. You get to go to many different places. In B.C. they are all nice places. Cons. Crane rental means you have no schedule. Bigger the crane the bigger the pain in the ass to get set up. Tower crane pros. Nice view. Quiet. That's a big one for me. Peaceful and quiet. And once your up there you can put your slippers on if you want. Cons. All the trades are fighting for the hook. So proper breaks to stretch your legs and get some exercise are hard to come by. Also, if your pouring concrete for 10 hours your mind starts to go if you don't get a break. So I would say fox holler got it pretty well explained.
