Prokofiev "Troika" ('Lieutenant Kije') - Fistoulari conducts

- This is the most popular number in the Orchestral Suite that comes from the score Prokofiev wrote for the 1934 Soviet film "Lieutenant Kije." A 'troika' is a three-horse sleigh, so this music is often heard at Christmas time. In this superb 1950s stereo recording, Anatole Fistoulari conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra. (From 'Guild Historical' GHCD 2391).

For me, this is the sound of Christmas
Merry Christmas! Holly jolly
It's a beautiful piece of music and I love it xx
Same here.
Me too my music teacher introduced me to this and I've never tired of it in years 45
Same, happy holidays! 🎁
A long time ago at Christmas time I would place my children on my shoulders and with this song playing on the cassette deck would trot through the house. What joy we experienced, They now do this with their children. Thank you Sergei and Anatole for the memories.
Скажите из какой вы страны?
Every year I come back to play this at the start of December to get me in the mood for Christmas. And here I am again in 2022.
Me too
Me too🎄🎄
Me too. First time this season is right now, buoyed on by us beating Senegal.
Me too
It's not Christmas until this wonderful music is played.
❤it is not yuletide until we have heard the bells of the Troika! This is probably my all time greatest piece of music - thank you Sergei Prokofiev♥️
Your welcome.
For me this captures the spirit of Christmas and the excitement when I was a child
You can’t have Christmas without this playing, I love it just wish it was longer, lovely light hearted music 🎼
It's only in recent years, since watching a Crimbo concert done in the mouth of Castleton's Peak Cavern, that I've been aware that Greg Lake didn't come up himself with the best part of I believe in Father Christmas.
No in the same manner that King Crimson did a version of Holst's Mars The Bringer Of War and credited it to an arrangement by themselves, you can also mention how Eric Carmen used parts of the Second Movement within the Second Piano Concerto by Sergei Rachmaninoff for All by Myself.
Prog rock is a fusion of classical, rock and jazz
This used to give me all the feels when I was very young, and it still does today as a 50 year old.
Same here friend.
I remember listening to this piece of music as child one Christmas. Brings back lots of childhood Christmases.
Funny i was thinking the same thing 😃.i was about 7 when i first heard it...an awfull long time ago 😉
i grew up in malmö and we did not listen to this for christmas
One of the best Christmas tunes.
Prokofiev was able through his works to show feelings from utter conflict and destruction to deepest love and devotion such as this one.
This is not his exact work however
@@Evan-xp9uh yes it is.
Reminds me of dear old Terry Wogan who would always play this at this time of year x RIP
Totally love this song at Christmas time always listen to it when I always bake with my dad. I am 40 now brings back memories now my eldest daughter bakes with my dad and always listen to it.
Prokofiev was a master of his art, his music puts a fire in your belly and courage in your heart.
Troika- Lt. Kije’ by Prokofiev is such a wonderful Christmas piece of music. I’d love to go on that sleigh ride.
Having a blast playing this song in orchestra. I can't see why the film wasn't more popular.
My favourite Christmas tune of all time 🎄🕯
Brings back memories of parents arriving for the school Christmas concert in the 1960s, happy times .
Same memories, always my Xmas song.Indeed happy times.
I dedicate this exquisite music to Emerson, Lake and Palmer ("I Believe in Father Christmas"). Countless thanks to composer Serge Prokofiev and maestro Anatole Fistoulari.
Getting stoked for my trip to St. Petersburg!!!☺️🪆🧸
did it happeen? like with everything going on and all..
‘Troika ‘ Lt. Kije’ suite by Prokofiev is a lovely Christmas tune really brings Christmas to life.
It’s as though you’re gliding through the snow ⛄️ on your sleigh. Delightful tune.
An incredible uplifting piece of art! love it!
I have loved this piece ever since I was a little boy.
Respect friend.Same here.Merry Xmas to you and all.
I grew up with this, as well as the rest of _Lieutenant Kije_ ... and I can't imagine EVER tiring of this delightful music!
Sounds like the long ago...I remember this at Christmas time..nearly 60 years ago..coming out of the wooden radio in my grandparents lovely old kitchen....lovely concerned voices..foggy December evenings....happy old days are gone forever.
Merry Christmas!
Thank you for these beautiful pictures! My grand-mother told me how she loved these troika rides when residing in Odessa before the revolution; and it is the first time I see pictures of them!
Funnily enough the sound of September for me. That's when I first saw woody Allen's love and death film, with this soundtrack. Wind rushing through big Russian forests.
We used to play this when I was in high school orchestra. I've always enjoyed it.
I have fond memories of this piece used to accompany a children's record from my childhood, "Diana and the Golden Apples".
I just heard the Greg Lake piece on the radio, and it triggered something which I had to rack my brains trying to identify. I'm glad I succeeded.
actually this has nothing to do with Christmas. In the film, the officer who caused the whole Lieutenant Kizhe mess is traveling with an outpost commander in the troika sled, getting progressively drunken on vodka and finally crashing at their destination. The song is more about how love is like an inn where women go out and go in. Still, it has become a quintessential Russian theme and a cherished Christmas song. ej
The KeybdFlyer HAHAHA !!!! Love you !
Greg lake made a brilliant Christmas song out of this classic piece of music ✌️
At the suggestion of Keith Emerson.
@@huskyfaninmass1042Yeah,I never knew that Husky Fan, thanks for the info,I know Keith Emerson was with Greg lake in Emerson, Lake and Palmer,I only really know Fanfare for the Common man, and I know Keith Emerson was originally in the '60s group The Nice, but like I said thanks for the info,I love the history of pop/rock music, have a good collection of albums, and books on different bands. All the best man, take care 👍
@JayBrilliant piece of music 👍
@JayHa,Benny the Bouncer, it's a bit mad, but I like it,I gave it a 'Like', nice and cheery. 👍

woody allen brought me here (love and death) ;) i love this so much! truly unique russian sound!
Absolutely love this 👍
Glad you like it!
Still replying 11 years later!
Fearful excitement. To see the segment in the movie you have to laugh and look away :), but so well done, not only a capture of the feelings there must be on a night time sleigh ride (I’ve never), but a musical emotion (Pizzicato Plus) that would be shared in so many exciting events in our lives. Mr. Prokofiev, you are a eternal.
Reminds me of my old music teacher Mr Hollinsworth at Wingfield School in 1975. Such a lovely, lively piece.
Thank you...this piece of music has been floating around somewhere in my head for a while....thanks
Pure joyful brilliance! A masterpiece!

*A song to rescue people from the brink of suicide*
Troika Lt. Kije’ by Prokofiev. What a wonderful Christmas tune this is it always makes me smile. 😃 It’s such a happy piece of music. Sleigh ride music is the most exciting part of Christmas 🎄 you never know when the snow is going to come and you’re going to need that sleigh.
Excellent riff...
Wonderful conductor!
Gorgeous piece and playing. With beautiful accompanying shots. Great posting.
My heart music, WONDERFUL ❤👱♀️🇹🇩🇺🇸
LT Kije is a wonderful story & movie that needs to be retold on the big screen. The sound tract is already there.
Absolutely smashing music, of course, and smashing visuals, as well.

A great match of music and video. Exhilarating stuff!

My favorite!!! I listen to this every year. Doesn’t ELP have this in their song at the. End of Father Christmas
Greg Lake uses it in "I Believe In Father Christmas" during verses.

This is the right tempo, driving.

Sleigh driving, that is. 😊
Thank you! I've never heard this piece before.
Lieutenant Kijé was one of the earliest sound films made in the Soviet Union.
Troika..
The principal melody in this movement is taken from an old Hussar song.
The stunning five-movement Kijé suite.
I think I first heard it in 1975 in a Woody Allen film....Love and War.
Actually, the title is Love and Death ...
