Yes, so true. Switzerland 🇨🇭 is more expensive for food and public transport. I been to Swiss, I love nature and beautiful mountains. I'm glad u chose Singapore 🇸🇬 as your new home.

Hi Swiss girl, Happy to know that you enjoyed living in ours tiny Singapore. I have friends from Norway told me that before coming here they heard that this place is boring. But after staying here for 5 years. You know what they telling me now they have so many things to enjoys during weekends. They are saying nnot enough time for so many things to do here. So yes you are right just that you need to know where to find..
The summary is fair. But Singapore is fun to the extent that you find spending the day at an airport terminal fun. You can find many restaurants at the terminal. That type of fun.

Singapore is NOT expensive if you know where to go for shopping and for your meals. Try our neighbourhood retail shops and eating places - within walking distance of our subway stations, for those who don’t drive. You can find a plate of chicken rice for as little as SGD2.30 (IS$1.80?) at Sembawang station Exit D. A cup of Milo-kosong for SGD1.30 (US$1) a d a delightful breakfast comprising two sunny side up eggs, hash brown, pancakes, chicken breast/hotdog for SGD5.90 (US$4.40) at Bukit Canberra’s very clean idyllic hawker centre instead of paying 4-5 times more at Starbucks.
You are so right, on average rental up 30-40% in 2022 as rental were also low prior Covid. The Bank mortgage interest took more than the increment. Now, the rental should recurl. Enjoy and continue to smart stay !! ❤
@Swizzyinsg, not really. Hdb Buyers are subsidized by the government. Hdb Rental in the open market are not, but cheaper due to lower cost, no amenities etc. Those subsidized rentals are for low income, mostly. Foreigners does not qualify
It's good you like the island. I just came back from 4 days in SG for business meeting and I feel sooo exhausted, so hot and crowded everywhere I went/go: during weekends everyone is going to the same places😢.. everyone has a long face and seems stressed. Perhaps with your job, you can do better than the locals who have to commute everyday and their salary isn't much to cope with the standard of living. I used to live and work in SG years ago and never felt so happy to have moved out to the neighbouring country which offers much better conditions of living and prices and people are also much friendlier.
Great insights into Singapore. I'm curious though - in Canada we call people who move here "immigrants". But I'm noticing from all the Singapore vlogs that everyone there calls them "expats" . Why so?
Expat is short for expatriated. Meaning that a person is moving to another country temporarily (usually work-related), whereas an immigrant is permanent.
It is discrimination. When I was young, the term was used to describe people who were expatriated overseas for work by their own companies. Today, anyone who work outside their own country on local terms calls themselves expats. But for the blue-collar workers like construction workers, people call them immigrant workers.
Food (including coffeeshops and hawker centres food) prices are expensive is relative. A lot of Singaporeans especially non-graduates and the elderly they do not have a high income nor possess high retirement income streams. To them, food IS EXPENSIVE HERE in Singapore especially given the recent rising food prices trend after GST (Good and Services Tax) raises kicks in. So afterall, prices are relative. To a person who earns a take-home pay of SGD 3000 or more, yes perhaps food prices aren't that expensive, still affordable. But for those whose take-home pay is less than SGD 2000 per month, spending SGD 600 on food per month (30 days x SGD20 per day expenditure on 3 meals + beverages), that is not a small fraction of expenditure costs in food. Especially when you have seniors that financially rely on a family member to support, or that children that you need to feed, generally speaking current prices FOOD in Singapore IS EXPENSIVE to these households.
Except that people on SGD2,000/month don’t pay taxes, nor go for Starbucks but drink the healthier version: water 💦 I had a rude shock decades ago when I was living in Honolulu: people were on daily wages and employers like Burger King or Pizza Hut would only call them for work at peak hours. How much can one earn with such skewed work arrangements and NO employee benefits? On top of that, the US practise a deduct-first for taxes so the take-home pay is way less. And it wasn’t cheap living in Honolulu…
I really learn so much from you, in terms of your outlook as a person, even though I am a Singaporean myself. This is the ugly part of social media. About boring, these people may be talking about clubing crazy parties they had in other countries. Some even complain about SG does not have rivers and mountains. One compare SG with Canada about natural beauty. In fact, they should compare with cities in Canada instead.
singapore IS expensive, unless you are careful to go to those cheapest options, food, accomodation, but you need to search for them. renting to stay one night hotel needs few hundreds sing dollars, eg for short-term rent, one night in 2,3 star hotel, like hotel88, fragrance hotel, which are for fu.cking in red light district i think also needs at least $200, one night in a old retired bus converted hotel in changi beac needs $400 to $600..., 5-star hotels may need $1000 minimum
And Singapore is one of the cleanest and safest place to live. And the food is amazing. These are true. But don’t criticize the government than you will be ok.
Owning a home and car is impossible in Singapore. The local living in a very stressful situation. The expat is doing well. I was an expat and I know. I used to pay 100000 for a second hand bmw that will only caused me 15000 in US. She needs to get the facts straight.
