I picked up a pat-83 repro made by mil-tec because my previous web gear finally crapped out and surplus for that kit has dried up in my area. I have a few points to make for anyone curious as to my personal observations before anyone goes the same route I do:
Starting with pros; the vest can realistically carry everything you need for a short term period in the field. I could probably stretch it out to a week with some bushcraft tricks and a decent water filter before I lose my paddle up shits creek, but I also spent my teen years sleeping on the sidewalk and eating actual garbage. Mag pouches are abundant and the "saddle bags" on the sides can each hold a common large soda bottle with some wiggle room, which I do when using it as a weight vest to work out. The backpack on the vest can also carry extra field kit like rain covers, socks n undies, hydration bladders, you name it. Anything that is too bulky to be rolled up into a pouch on the vest can easily be strapped directly to the back with the loose web straps that line the rear side of the vest, which I can also see being used to attach field tools like machetes or shovels if you want to go full innawoods. It holds weight well and I imagine with a decent amount of mileage, it would even be comfortable to wear even with just a t-shirt, as the material is basically straight up cordurawith nylon mesh padding and a few waterproof panels for the pouches not unlike what you'd find in an ALICE pack, so, as long as you have some kind of over-shirt, you're
    /chilling/.
There are some notable cons however, but all non-modular equipment has them. It's simply a matter of training to work around what you got:
1 - there are soo many pouches on the vest that it quickly becomes easy to forget what you have and /where/ it is and the last thing you want to be doing if you need to be wearing this thing is patting yourself down like a drunk who's lost their keys. Designate a role to all your pouches, and don't fuck with that system. I use the designated IFAK pouch on the front left side of the vest to carry a light and bino's as underneath that pouch there's an interior pouch for admin shit and that all goes hand in hand in that same spot. It would be great real estate for more mag pouches but trust me when I tell you; you don't need em. Why not carry an IFAK there? Because when the vest was designed, Israeli bandages were about as good as trauma gear got and the pouch is too small to carry a good kit you can just rip out, organize, and go to work with. It was probably great for the time but nowadays it's better to have something on your back that someone can peel off your ass so they can properly wipe it.
2 - vest has tooons of straps and buckles on it, which is great for adjustability assuming you can keep track of all of it, which, if you don't, could leave you in one of two scenarios. Either A ) you get grabbed by your environment and left to dangle around helplessly like a bad guy in a spiderman movie, or B ) you fail to adjust everything to your proper size which can leave you lugging around a bunch of heavy shit that jingles, jangles, and takes the wind out of you when you boogie.
3 - the system wasn't designed with body armor in mind and it will let you know. I tried rocking a low profile plate carrier underneath and the front straps of the vest where the chest pockets sit refused to sit tight without splaying off the carrier and sitting on my shoulders which kinda fucks my fung-sheui. It seems to play nice with flak jackets and I imagine going ham on it with some carabiners, clips, and electrical tape like an OG body-stacker could probably yield some decent results. Also, if you tighten the shoulder straps too tight, the backpack will bump into your helmet if you go prone and keep you from getting a sight picture.
I'm short: this is a piece of kit that suits grunts who sit in holes or patrol vehicles. It's not low drag by any means but if you're cool with packing heavy and carrying shit for your crew, it'll do you good.

Grew up reading the SOF magazines in the 80's and all of the pictures of the Bush wars in Namibia/SW Africa showed the PAT70/73 and the PAT83 setup. But growing up, I was desperate for the Brown Nutria boonie hat they had. It just looked cooler than the American ones. Got lucky on a preban Galil and so wanted to do the R4 rifle setup but parts was expensive especially their version of furniture. All together, I've met several ZA veterans and they seemed happy with the PAT83.

Never wore it personally, but they were a popular alternative in the British Army in the late '90s to early '00s. I knew a few guys in my regiment who wore them on patrol in NI; I personally preferred a belt setup, or in some situations a chest rig. I would certainly argue that they were probably better constructed and more ergonomical than the COP vests typically available to UK military at the time.

Never served in the military, but I used this battle jacket for the 5 years that I was a volunteer wildfire fighter. You can cram a crazy amount of gear into the pockets although the ones by your hips made walking tedious as your hands could never be down by your sides. I also joined the two pouches on the center of the back to fit a large hydration bladder, which came in useful.

I have a bit of a love affair with the pattern 83, I have used it in multiple roles in multiple theatres, all the way up until 2022when I left my service. I worked within a recce role and worked with multiple recce troops from other nations. When you are set up and used to it, it makes for a very effective equivalent to other LBE, whilst not being modular there are certain ways you can sort of avoid this and add pouches into the adjustable areas of the rig. I would still highly recommend it and still maintain mine with a regular patrol load as a just in case sort of thing. I can throw it on and carry just about everything I need from ammunition, to navigation, to sustainment, to wet/dry kit, to comms and plenty more. I am by no means an expert but I would highly recommend this rig instead of traditional LBE or micro rigs and battle belts specifically in a recce capacity.
Just as an aside with my own personal insights and with current world situations, I believe there will be a shift back from the well known high speed low drag direct action kits to a more traditional sustainment kit for the infantry and specialist units where LBE, webbing or whatever you locally call it will more apply. From my own service and still being in contact with certain members of certain units there is a lot more training going back into self sustainment (think SOG) so rigs like this will likely be modernised and re-applicated for a modern context

Ivan and his /k/ommando store is getting a new batch of these straight from SA. I already pre-ordered one in excellent+ condition. Outside of going out to shoot some fun, I really like that it could work perfectly as a hiking jacket. That top center pouch looks like it would be perfect for a CamelBak.

The radio pouch is great for a large 2-3L water bottle and a bivvy if you rip out the divider, and the left/right rear med/mg belt pouches are great for fitting a full "dixie" filled with chow on long patrols.
I had the rarer driver variant rig as well that was more like a chicom pattern and better for short patrols and vehicle work (even half unfilled that radio pouch on the full rig hunches your body forward in a landie). If you can still find original surplus from SA they are Bush proof.

Classic LBE, I have an older ACU/ UCP US Army LBE I was issued when we phased to that camo and equipment and was supposed to mimic/ resonate this system quite a bit, still not as good as the original in my opinion.

Surplus store in Pretoria RSA literally has mountains of this stuff for around $70 a piece.

Wore this extensively for a few years. Great rig. Tbh all the new LBV vests (spiritus) is just a rip off of this rig with a bum pouch at the rear and a different shoulder harness. Even the pouches. Perhaps its a better version, i dont know. But this is definetly the OG of chest rigs.

I'm still rocking an old school CIRAS plate carrier and that's mainly because of it's carry capacity; there is some awesome older gear out there. Never tried the P83 BJ but I'm definitely interested.

Dude, I served in the SADF. This gear was designed for the R4 and R5 rifles. Also for the rest of the standard issue kit like water bottles and Dixies. (Pots and pans) you get the idea. Awesome battle jacket. With your gear, frags etc stowed correctly you can comfortably traverse long distances quietly. When things became interesting, your mags were easily accessible and you didn't feel the weight at all. Enjoy it.

In the case of many of the real battle jackets, you'll noticed the tags don't say "Made in South Africa", but rather "Made in [Insert Bantustan Here]", like Bophuthatswana, Transkei, Ciskei etc.
