During the bush war in Rhodesia, when given a choice, many of us preferred the FN (FAL) to the AK. An enemy hiding behind a tree or a wall was not safe from the FN, it would go right through. Not so with the AK.

My wife's uncle was an armourer in the Rhodesian Army for years. I mentioned to him the other day how sought after these rifles were and he just could not believe it. He had quite a collection when he lived in SA but had to sell them when he moved to the UK. He was gutted as he was so attached to them.
He told me a funny story once. He got a job as an assistant in a camera shop in Durban through his network of army friends. He would be allowed to wear his pistol on his belt in the shop. The pay was cash in hand. When he was told the lousy daily pay rate he was shocked, but the manager said 'well there's always the chance you'll get to shoot somebody!'

Sir I'm so sorry that my country (USA), (along with many other nations) failed you and yours in your time of need. The actions of the U.K. in particular was deplorable in the extreme. Even now when it should be obvious and undeniable that the lives of all within your borders would have been quantifiably better had your side prevailed not one nation has put forth a formal apology. Not that it would be enough nor restore your Homeland but at least it'd be something. However what with the culture of white guilt and critical race theory running rampant I suppose it'll never come to pass. So as a single American let me personally say how sorry I am. I hope you found a safe place for you and yours as everything around you fell and I pray that I'm not right now witnessing my own Homeland falling to a very similar dark fate.

Also if you've ever had to sling around an FAL for a long time it'll throw your back out, best to carry it with your mitts.

I love my South African made/Rhodesian FAL
I bought an older kit and luckily the SA serial numbers and the Rhodesian serial numbers all match. Used a DSA receiver too and aged it to match the rest of the kit.
I found a Halbek device for the muzzle and it does work well. Also scored a camo RA boonie hat as well as a camo RA rifle shoulder bag.
Would love to know where you found the uniform.

"One Fire" and the album it's from, "Passage to Rhodesia" are both honestly *extremely* melancholy. The album is presented as being from the perspective of a white Rhodesian who is looking back at everything and realizing the futility of the war and how they were probably not even fighting for the right cause, with lyrics like "[Rhodesia] were you ever even ours?" Give the full thing a listen, it's pretty nuanced.

The thing is that once you got shot with the FN FAL (or R1) you stayed shot. That thing could comfortably take a person out from behind a big tree. I served in the South African military in1979 and 1980. Initially it was heavy to carry but you once got used to that , you just felt really safe with it on your side. It was no pop gun for sure. The only problem with it in the SA situation (dusty on the border) was that it was a prima donna. It (especially the magazines) wanted to be perfectly clean at all time. That caused a lot of stoppages. It was replaced around 1980 onwards with the so called R4 (basically a Galil platform) . A very good rifle too.

Really cool video. It is nice to see a video about Rhodesian FAL with its true history. The South African R1. Also don't worry about the pattern 83 battle jacket that is not right for the rifle. It still looks great with the brushstroke camo. In South Africa we used the Pattern 70 if I remember correctly with the R1. I have both and the pattern 83 is much more comfortable. The pattern 70 is heavy and have zero comfort build in to it. They were made for tough men. Good luck!!
