I’ve just found another super good channel. I’am 78 years old and kinda shut in here in my place out in Nevada. Really enjoyed your trip on the Rimrock Trail. You folks seem like a real nice couple. Keep up the videos so I can have some enjoyment in my old age. Ha, Thanks a lot.
Amazing all the navigation and communication tools and redundancy. I remember traveling 2 track all over Nevada with my folks in the 60’s. They had two rules. Travel with at least one other rig and use 4WD only to get out of trouble; not into it. I realize that says two things - times have changed and I’ve reached fossil-hood.
I grew up in Western Colorado. Really miss the Delores River Country. The entire area is awesome with ever-changing scenery. I enjoy the rig segments and housekeeping, chores, etc.
Ah man, feels so good to be back in the groove. The Russo's are doing what they do best again. Two things. 1) That crap they put on the roads, Argh. We have to deal with calcium chloride in the winter to melt the ice and in the summer the they spray magnesium chloride on to keep the dust down. Can you spell Rust. And yes, it attracts the moisture out of the air, that is how it keeps the dust down. 2) WOW, what country. I spent most of my working life driving on some crazy mountain roads. I just love when you come over a hump or the view opens up to something like what you experienced. Good stuff.
The trees were probably Aspen, not birch in the beginning. Unless you were looking East and heading back to Montrose they were the LaSal Mts. The Continental was behind you at Monarch Pass.
Good examples of the ups & downs of a typical trip. That crud from the (magnesium chloride) road spray was unfortunate. Good reminders to travel with an experienced group and that if you prefer to avoid the occasional scrape or ding, then thoroughly research your path in advance.
Always enjoy you two and your banter...so much fun. I am on the road too...living vicariously through you two! It is always fun to see where you guys go next....When I see you drinking that special coffee..I almost smell the aroma....Half of the enjoyment of good coffee is the aroma!!!
Great video. I have a 2003 7.3 with 250,000 miles and did the ball joints, tie rods, shocks and steering dampener but still kept hearing a clunk. I realized I have the original sway bar bushings and linkage and I replaced them front and back and no more clunk and a noticeable difference in steering at highway speeds.
Need to keep a couple machetes in vehicle, and do a little bush waking to avoid the pin stripping , give overland expedition a view, and you will get the idea. They even keep a small chain saw with them.Welcome to the world of overlanding !!!
Great video Russo’s...really enjoyed it. We overland in roamer with full LineX body armor, but interested in the overhead rock and large tree limb situation on the trail for 10.5ft height. We have the LT so shorter roamer and great turning radius so I don’t think the switchbacks would be an issue. I would like any comments on the overhead situation and if there are any immovable pinch points that were a challenge. I’ve been waiting for a good full size rig video so thanks for that.
interesting trip. You're not in the suburbs anymore. And I suspect that what you called "white birch" when you were leaving Montrose are actually Aspen. Lots of aspen in CO. very little birch.
Ones I get started on a trail I never wash my truck except for keeping the lights and windows clean. Then when I make it back home I fire up the pressure washer. Of course if it was”my home on wheels” I guess I would follow Joe’s routine. Being on the road since 2015 in Lots different type of Vans and motorhomes can’t prepare people for off road trails. You learn from putting on the miles. And this trip was a good start!
I thought the truck did pretty good for your trip! My SO would have loved driving that trail; I know he would have! Me, I would have enjoyed the flat, long stretches and the campgrounds and creeks but some of those turns and inclines, not so much! Kudos to you for your bravery and determination but also for being smart in traveling with those who have experience out there. Miss your coffee and food exhibits! Looking forward to seeing those again! Take care and God bless you! Beautiful scenery, by the way!
This was really enjoyable; never heard of this trail. This is the sort of content I'm here for. Learned a lot; would have liked a bit more video of the scenery and landscape. Keep the great content coming, thank you!
WOW, this is the video I’ve been waiting for with Leo 👏🏼! A 25min long vid, is the perfect length for capturing such an excellent adventure - those views were absolutely stunning on some parts of that trail! Kudos to the superb videography by Kaity Wan Kenobi 👍🏼👍🏼 (What doesn’t kill Leo, makes him stronger 😂)
Not only does magnesium chloride keep the dust down, it is more eco friendly. Before people used to spread used motor oil on the roads. You never said what the clunk was in the front of your truck?
That's a great drive did it ten years ago in a jeep. I would do it again if I had a rig like yours. Once you hit a certain age tents just beat you up to much.
Mag Chloride is used in CO a lot particularly in the winter on roads to prevent icing. It’s not so bad on steel, but it’ll eat up aluminum pretty fast. Polished aluminum wheels never look great in CO unless you stay away from winter driving. Did the Rim Rocker 2 years ago from Moab in. Pretty cool trail overall. I thought it was narrow in my Tacoma!
I live in Montrose County and actually grew up here I just thought I would let you know the trees that you referred to as Birch trees are actually quaking Aspen trees locally they are known as quakey trees.
I too thought there had to be another way in when I noticed the trailer. Beautiful scenery and without a bunch of people. I think the only way to do this is with others, in case anything were to happen.
Your van would have no problem on the whole first part of that trip. It was all well graded dirt roads with some gorgeous places to boondock. Also, if you missed it, check out our trip to Glacier: ruclips.net/video/WAxDzJ-s3OE/видео.html
@@Weretherussos haahaa 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 how about roof top tent. Hiha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I am kidding love your videos. You actually believe me that my suv get on those rough trails . No way
Great video, someday would love to travel and camp like this. Reminds me of dirt-bike motorcycle camping in Idaho with a group and it was so much fun!!!
The point of the magnesium chloride is no doubt to draw moisture from the air and into the dirt road, thus compacting the road hard and keeping it solid, so I'm not surprised it softens near water. Salt of some kind is used on dirt roads for that reason around here (Europe) also, it ties moisture in and prevents the road from just flying off as dust. So yeah, having that under the vehicle too long is probably not a good idea, and it will most likely be bad for the metal if left too long.
That magnesium chloride is hygroscopic and is used for dust control, which is why it went from being dry and crusty to wet and muddy in the morning. It is extremely corrosive to anything metal, including aluminum.
Did y'all have to deflate and inflate the tires quite a bit? Around 20:10 you were having some issues and it didn't look like your tires were deflated enough if any. Would have made it a little easier to negotiate it.
Living in Colorado, that’s what gets put down to de-ice the roads in the winter. It’s not as damaging as salt to the vehicles and washing off is fairly easy🤔😉😁
@@Weretherussos Thank you for the reply. South Korea is a small country but there are many beautiful places in South Korea. Definitely, I will show you around if you visit here!!
You can complain about caked on mud/rock on truck and metal bits. But our 98 Dodge Ram 24-valve TD lasted 300K , saved by crust. Mechanics hated it but, our body lasted with no rust out anywhere except for a 1x3” piece on quarter panel. And we still got High tradein value for it.😷
Remove the lower half of the steering column cover and take out the ignition cylinder. You can see the contacts and put a small piece of tape. No more ding ding ding.
I am deciding what truck to buy for my first real overlanding rig project and am deciding between full-size or mid-size trucks. Are there ever any trails where a single or double cab Tacoma would go places your truck couldn't? My buddies have Tacos and I don't want to get left in the dust haha. Love your videos!
We haven’t found any but it all depends on what kind of trails they’re going down. If you’re building out a rig, keep in mind that depending on how much weight you add, a lot of work needs to go into the suspension/driveline for the Tacoma whereas you won’t need as much or any mods on a full size truck.
Awesome. I just did this trip last month. I only saw one family in a side by side the whole time. You didn’t happen to find a Nemo Helios shower bag in that first campground did you? 😀
Good morning . I need your expertise on trailers . If you can please.i might buy a used one ( budget ) to travel for the next 3-5 years. I just my 2 dogs and I , sometimes a friend will join us . I do need lots storage place and I’m 5’5 so I think will be easy to find something that I be able to walk standing inside . With full bathroom and kitchen. But not to big ,easy to drive with smaller car. So you can help I be very grateful. Have amazing weekend 😊

Yikes!
Great trip. Thanks for taking us along.
Some of those steep twisty trails would have given me anxiety!! You guys are very brave and inspirational to me.
That was fun but scary. Don’t know if I could take the rock and rolling. Love to share your adventures! Thanks for taking us along!
Would have liked to have seen a walk around of the other rigs.

I wanted to see how the truck cleaned up. Thanks for sharing this video, it was great.
How’s sleeping in the heat with the truck camper? Do a series about how sleeping in the heat in a Four Wheel Camper is. Thanks
A series? It’s hot, what’s to know. They make AC. Pick the temp thats too hot for you and don’t go after that or get AC.
Spectacular trip, starting to see the benefit of the truck camper.
Thanks!
Very cool trip, makes me appreciate truck campers and trucks a lot more. For now i'm just suv and scamp, but this gives me ideas for the future.
