Our visit to Cuba and time studying with Maestro Maximino Duquesne inspired this tutorial video on the Bembé rhythm. The highlight of our time in Cuba was studying with legendary drummers and percussionists. The Bembé is played at spiritual and religious gatherings with singing, drumming, and dance. These gatherings are also called a Bembé. This tutorial video showcases different versions of the rhythm played on various instruments: the bell, kata/palito, shekere, conga, quinto, salidor/tumbador, and tres golpe. The clave played on the bell is highlighted on a separate screen. The video features members of the Rumba All Stars, @RumbaAllStars. We are Amado and Jax, ‪@nullacruising‬, driving around the world in our 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser named Nulla. Our favorite moments are when we find that intersection of music and art. We spent almost two months in Cuba at the beginning of 2023. During our time in Cuba, we witnessed the importance of music. Only one block from where we stayed, the legendary Rumberos de Cuba performed every Friday. Almost daily, we walked 30 minutes to Casa de Juan Bencomo to study Cuban rhythms with Maestro Maximino Duquesne Martinez. The time spent with Maximino was an honor we will never forget, and we thank him for the opportunity. We also want to thank Lazaro Rizo and Juan Bencomo, who shared their time with us and are featured in the video. In addition, we want to recognize and thank Miguelito Leon, who supported, coordinated the artist, and directed the development of the video.
I am a long-time student of the drum. It is from my experience as a student that I share this tutorial video. We plan to make more tutorial videos of the artists and their music we meet.
