The Island of Anglesey was once home to one of history's most mysterious groups: the Druids. The Romans accused them of magical rituals, human sacrifice and even cannibalism, and soon after the invasion, the full force of the Roman army descended on this small island. Their mission: to destroy this stronghold of the British resistance.

I was just recently turned onto this series... WOW. As an American, I love how incredibly rich the history of the UK is and, being a student of history, I find it fascinating. This history is the partial history of my country because of it's U.K. colonial roots and the heritage of many people from my area of New England. It all has a very real linear tracing to much of the world's history as well. I love it and Tony Robinson is an absolute treasure.

Archaeology and history may be more accessible, the conquests more distinct and the monuments and remnants more durable in much of the British isles, but people were living their lives other places as well. Your own continent is no exception, so I don't understand why you have so many egyptologists and such.

It has just occurred to me that a major reason that I enjoy Time Team is that most episodes occur in villages or middle-of-nowhere places that are not on the itinerary of most American tourists I think. I used to scoff at Francis Pryor and his 'ritual landscape' narrative. Then, I retired and had the time to research ancient history, folklore, mythologies and beliefs. He is absolutely correct. Think: animism, pantheism and ancestor 'worship'. Their world was alive with 'spirits' and 'gods' and even their ancestors, whom they often deified and worshipped as gods. A completely different worldview than that of modern man. To us, it would've been an alien world. An alien landscape.

@@stevenhale2935 Putting an end to a conflict that really has no resolution isn't "backing down." Backing down is when someone says, "Okay, I see your point. I was wrong." Smiling politely and turning your attention elsewhere is simply a refusal to engage.
I mean, I agree with you wholeheartedly. De la Bedoyere would absolutely not back down. He's far too passionate a Romanist to knuckle under. If Francis Pryor and he were sitting next to each other in the inevitable pub and Pryor started to revive a set-to they'd had in the field, I suspect de la Bedoyere would say something to the effect of, "Let's save that for later, shall we? What are you having? Oh, did you see that lovely little Tudor manor house and church down the road?"
That's not backing down. That's tact.

I wonder how effective the wicker man would really have been as a means of human sacrifice? People always go on about it with reference to the Druids and I feel it needs contextualising. The accusation was made by a culture that routinely fed people to the lions for sport and loved accusing others of human sacrifice, being about the only grizzly barbaric practice the Romans didn't indulge in. The evidence for it in Britain is basically Lindow Man (correct me if I'm wrong) - while we can say he was probably ritually executed, archaeology doesn't tell us for what reason and by whom. Miranda Green points out the similarities with Danish bog deaths, it's a long way to go just to get rid of a cauldron.

@@myhounddog This one pre-dates the internet by a fairly long chalk. Miranda Green was an improvement on Stuart Piggott's take on the subject. Fun thing; at a camp with friends here in The Netherlands, one guy was wearing a hat that was VERY similar to Phil's. Because of that, we started naming that friend "Time Team Phil", even though that guy himself had never heard of this show.
The still shot at the beginning of this video here combined with the title reminds me of a photo that I made of this friend at that camp; he was lying flat down on a bench by the campfire. From a certain angle looking through the campfire it looked as if he was lying IN the fire and I decided to make a photo. At exactly that moment the guy stretched and yawned, but on the photo through the campfire it looked as if he was being burned alife and was stretching and screaming in terror!
That photo got the in-crowd nickname "Time Team Phil being sacrificed in a druid fire", also because it was a spiritual camp that we were having.
Fun extra fact: all the ladies at that camp were in love with "our Time Team Phil".
