That's why so many of his monsters and creatures interact or have something to do with mouths; that's why the Gyo machines enter humans through the mouth, it's the reason why the holes in the Amigara's fault stretched the mouth, same as the why Fuchi's mouth is her most monstrous feature, also why the Blackbird's mouth is constantly the central focus of it's story, etc, etc, etc.
That trailer really feels like they tried to make it look like Ito's ink was genuinely coming to life on the pages. @verskarton thankfully AS doesn't do that often. That's more of a warner bros. thing. Though, with how long the anime's been taking, I wouldn't be suprised if it ended up going down that route

you do know that things like copyright and fairuse isn't considered for places outside of japan, and the style isn't even complex, it's just manga but animated without colour. and if your thinking that other production companies are going to do the exact same thing, they won't because why would they if they adapt another of Junji Ito's work then it happens.
It's a 200 IQ to keep the anime black and white to create a misterious ambience while at the same time giving the animators more time to polish the animation and details in less time
Honestly, I'm happier to wait and let the artists put their all into form and execution than rushing it and not letting them fucking GO HOME at the end of the day
It looks like a more traditional technique of drawing each panel of the animation by hand like a flip book which I think is the only approach that could possibly work for this manga
I'm just reading the manga at this point. Actually Im reading a few other series at the same time. They are Punpun, Homunculus, Trail of Blood. I know these four series will make me a more mature individual cant wait honestly 💪.
I think the animations weren't that good because of how difficult it was to replicate his style in animation- because they used colour. Junji Ito's manga(s) are good and extremely detailed like that because- in my opinion- the lack of colour makes it way easier to portray the shading needed for a specific scene. The darkness of it stands out more than colour would (somehow???), which is why: 1. I absolutely love his style and 2. I think that it's a huge factor to why the animations before Uzumaki didn't do that well. Now that Uzumaki's being animated in black and white (from what I can see in the trailer) it's definitely going to be way better than the previous ones, the upgrade's gonna be amazing.
Honestly, they just need to find a single style that can deliver the gruesomeness and horror of a single junji ito panel. No matter how good the style and animation of the anime is, when the horror isn't scary and disgusting then it's totally pointless
Honestly I didn't even get what was bad about the examples he showed off. They look plenty good. I'd be surprised if the art was the downfall, or maybe I'm just easily impressed.
Honestly if i was handed one of his mangas and told to animate it, i would absolutely cry. I give them massive respect for even trying and i do hope it comes out well
I'd really like for anime to move in this direction, I'd much rather wait 10+ years for a PERFECT tokyo ghoul series than 2 years for a quick one, i beleive most anime viewers feel this way but just become impatient!
the reason the uzumaki anime has a lot of details is because it's in black and white, this gives the animators more time to focus on details than coloring since coloring takes a lot of time and process
A big reason for why I love old anime movies, like Vampire Hunter D, is bc of the AMAZING AMOUNT OF DETAIL! Pay ypur animaters properly and take the time that is needed to really make it good!
When I saw the title "Uzumaki", my brain gears started to go into overdrive, translating it to English on the meagre Japanese Language that I know. Then I realised that I've read this specific Junji Ito manga when I was 16. It was published in a local manga magazine here in Malaysia called KREKO, and "Uzumaki" translated into the Malay Language is "Pusaran Puaka", which is literally Haunted Spiral in English. Can't believe that the manga that traumatised many Malaysian teenagers around 2003-2004 is finally getting an anime adaptation...
We need more horror anime like pure or at least 50% horror, not ones that just tinges on it or just psychological horror like Death Note, Summer Time Rendering, and JJK: I want more Higurashi and Another.
Punpun has very detailed backgrounds, character designs are kinda meh when it comes to details, so they can be done. And bg's can be done and rendered in Unreal like Asano does them
To me the excuse is often feel like bullcrap. Junji Ito series don't look crap because is hard to animate, but because the animators go to the lazy route of doing plain colours and flattening the original design. In animation you have to take advantage of the medium, not just copypaste and have still images all the time. I've saw horror special episodes of Crayon Shinchan way scarier than most today's "horror" movies.
If a game movie or anime is delayed because of a pandemic, strike, money, ect I worry about the project being canceled or not turning out right. If it gets delayed because of the production crew not believing the product is right then I take a big breath of fresh air and a sigh of relief because that tells me people who care are behind the project.
Im happy to hear that artists are still willing and able to put the effort into anime at this level. Im not a big horror fan in any genre, but I've definitely heard of Junji Ito and just those couple clips look so good I think I'll have to give this a watch once it comes out. Add it to my list of anime with outstanding art/animation along with Akira and Redline.
I think there are some works that are impossible to adapt 1 to 1 into another medium. I would say most of Junji Ito's works could fall into that category. For instance, Lord of the Rings is probably one of the greatest page to screen adaptations of all time but there's so much that had to be changed or left out for that to happen because of the medium it was being transferred to. It takes someone who has an intimate understanding of 1) what theyre trying to adapt and 2) the medium theyre trying to adapt the thing into, to pull it off successfully. Despite how similar adapted anime are to manga source materials, the mediums are incredibly different from both a production and consumption standpoint and have to be treated differently.
I heard Uzumaki was cancelled… Also, it is true about Junji Ito’s Artwork and how it is almost impossible to be translated into an anime series. He’s just got such a unique art style that it’s incomparable to anything else.
