I live in California and want to tell everyone about the hilarious face that anti-gunners make when you tell them that the "Assault Weapon Ban" did not actually ban AR-15s.
      It's totally deer-in-the-headlights.
At that point I tell them "I was at the gun store down the street yesterday and there were a dozen AR-15s for sale. The Assault Weapon Ban just means the AR-15s can't have a flash suppressor, folding stock, or pistol grip.
Around that time I tell them that M-14s and M-1 Garands are legal, and the last mass shooter just used a couple pistols. Then I tell them to have a nice day.

I've said it many times... The supreme court didn't do the 2A any massive favors by kicking all those cases back. They could have ruled on them THEN and this would all be done. They didn't... They absolutely, and literally passed the buck.

Downside: one has to be careful about loading through that window. If you hold the rifle upside down and drop in the rounds, they get jammed up. I found that holding the mag inclined upwards (so that gravity is pulling the bullets down) is reliable. I haven't yet tried, with say three rounds still in the mag, to pull down the traveler and shove more bullets in. I guess there's a potential for the three bullets to jam while they're falling.
This is a great solution for going to the range.
For home defense, still have the removable 30 mags. Unfortunately for me, mine were lost in a boating accident...

I'm in MA. We have a similar stipulations to CA based on the fact that the MA legislature formally adopted the 94 AWB in perpetuity, without a sunset date back in 98. To add insult to injury, in 2016, AG Maura Healy made an edict, published in the Boston globe, proclaiming all formerly legal, AWB compliant rifles to be "copies or duplicates" of their unneutered counterparts, effectively banning the sale of those guns. This witch is now governor. May God have mercy on my soul.

You can also have the mag pinned in place from factory. There are these 10 round speedloaders/stripper clips which you insert into the ejection port and push the rounds into the mag. When you remove it the bolt closes and a round is chambered. Works extremely well and is fast. Much less of a faf compared to this contraption however, you can still use those with this magazine.

Close, release the spring, and turn the rifle upright again. Sounds simple, but it may have some engineering problems, but it would be doable as You have the space from 10 to 20 rounds of ammo to work with. You may retain the side door for topping of the mag with loose rounds. Just compress and fill up.
