@@9113Zach I did some videos on my own channel about it. Its incredibly tedious and you have to locate a lot of very specific instructions. Overall though not too bad. However our T6 did end up having low compression on cylinder 6 even after the job, so my work was for nothing.
Hello - I wanted to comment on a successful lip seal installation for the READ unit without the special tool. I cut with kitchen scissors (leaving a nice smooth edge) a piece of brass shim stock (mine was .005" but .003" would be better), anealed it on my kitched stove so it would be soft, and wound it 1.5 times around the shaft stub. The shim stock was maybe 1 inch wide and 1.5 or 2 inches long. After winding around the shaft, I removed it, and rolled it a little tighter so it would fit into the lip seal. I then slipped the lip seal backward onto the stub shaft to expand the lip a little, then slipped it onto the shim stock with some 90wt oil. With the lip seal on the rolled up shim stock, I worked one end of the shim stock with my fingers to expand it until it would just slip onto the stub shaft. Then I slipped the seal from the shim stok onto the shaft, rotating it gently in the same direction as the shim stock was rolled to avoid cutting it on the exposed edge of the shim. While operation took about 10 minutes.
Aalso, I wanted to thank you for posting these ideos - very helpful. I just finished replacing the head on my 2012 xc70 that had a burned exhaust valve. I found a junkyard head, and slapped it on. Works great! I saved myself a ton of money over having mine rebuilt, but it was a gamble not having the valves done.
I also re-used the front crank cover by threading in a very short screw where I had drilled the hole to pull the cover out. Save a couple dollars there as well, and now I can get it in and out easier.

@thevolvoguy Loved this video as they helped me answer a lot of questions. I have a 2008 LR2 with the 3.2 engine that has random P0016 errors. Its generally good (no errors) on cold but the P0016 pops up when warm instantly. I have swapped the obvious components already and wonder if it just could be the chain that slipped one or 2 teeth. How common is that ?

Is it common for ghe inner timing cover gasket to fail and leak oil? Car is at 341K Km, could a failed PCV cause over pressure in the crankcase leading to this?
It did in mine....I just shoved it back in firmly with a Allen wrench........it's been tight 2years later
Can I pull the valve head with the engine still in the car?
Hello, I am goingto tackle this job on my 3.0 engine. Is it easy to separate the exhaust manifold from the head? Do you do this from the top of the engine or underneat? Looks like a pretty tight area and I need your advise. Thanks in advance.
You have to remove the exhaust nuts and studs from the head if you removing the head and you do it from the top of engine.

Yes, you have to remove the timing cover and the timing chain and the inner cover as well.

Im going to be replacing the head on a SI6 engine. I believe the head is going to come with new tappets but not cams. Do you think Im going to need to do a valve adjustment?

If you have no problem then I would not worry about it. Some of the tools are available online and some you have to buy from a volvo dealer. If you have a blown head gasket or the valve cover is leaking oil. But of you have no problems. Then no worry. Bit if you have a problem let me know what it is and I will help you as much as I can.
Hello Volvo Guy, I bought a 2011 XC90 with a 3.2L engine that has a check engine alert on cylinder 3. It seems that the oil spilled over the plugs (too much oil refilled) because I could find oil deposited over the plugs underneath the coils. After changing oil and plugs, cleaning the injectors, and intake, the alert went off for a while but then showed up again. So I'm assuming it's the piston ring clogged with dirt. I'm working on it by myself, and purchased the toolkit you show in this video. In the meantime, I have removed the oil pan and the valve cover. I'm following your instructions, and I don't see you have a specific video showing how to remove the cylinder cover. At this point I would like to know if I need to take any precaution while removing it, and how to remove the piston for replacing the ring kit. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Once you have the valve cover off the only thing left is removing the exhaust and any other attached to the head and you just pull it off. Then you have to remove the connecting rod bearing cap and push the piston out and I recommend doing them one by one.
Can you tell me which part number is for the timing cover alignment please?
Look up the tool video it has all the tool numbers and everything you need.
Just pulled my 3.2 head, and it’s pretty warped... any idea what’s the maximum I can have milled off of the head? It’s a factory 100k mile car, so I’d rather not use a higher mileage head to replace it with.
That would be a better question for a Machine shop they would have to see how far it was warped.
A video on the read unit would be super helpful

I am considering doing similar to fix a compression issue with my 2011, XC60. 1st. Can the entire job be done in the car? (I noticed you mention this is in video 4, but I just wasn't sure if that was just the timing part using the timing tools?) 2nd, do you have any videos, tips/tricks or references on removing the cylinder head from the exhaust manifold? 3rd. Do the "tappers" (the part on the valve stem between the CAM and the valve stem) typically go bad with when there's a compression issue? Lastly, if there's a bad (scorn) CAM, are these CAM's unique or machined to their Cylinder Head or can you order just a replacement CAM if needed? Again, thank you for providing these videos, gives me confidence to try this one on my own!
Thank you, 1 yes you can do the job with the engine in the vehicle, 2 you would remove the nuts and the studs from the head on the turbo engine then the head comes right off. 3 the tap it usually does not wear out but if you change the cams you have to replace the Tappits to match the valve Clearance.
Just curious why this needs to be done with such a fairly new car?

This was done due to oil consumption problem and the pistons had to be changed to help minimize the oil consumption. Unless something goes really wrong with your engine you will never need to do this. I just did the video to help some of the people out there who might need to take on such project.

Yes you can. Otherwise you need the crank tool to turn the engine over.
@@TheVolvoGuy Say I wanted to do a leakdown test on my XC70. Would I even be able to turn each piston to TDC with the engine still in the car? I guess my question is, how much do you have to tear apart to get that crank tool in there?
@@dr_beetus to get the crank tool on all you need to do is remove the large crank cover on the passenger side black cover.
Few questions here. I'm trying to install the crankshaft positioner into an LR2 and it seems like I'd need to bang it with a rubber mallet to get it in. I first tried the knock off one and then went and purchased the volvo one. They have same issue. Perhaps there is a defect on the female parts. I think the only way I can get it in is to file or grind down the two pins on the tool, but I'm worried I may put too much slop in it. Also, the land rover manual seems to say I need to put it in TDC before disassembly. Is it only required during assembly? I would rather put it in TDC when the head is off as I suspect it will be much easier.
Also I know you did not show the tool to remove the head bolts. Volvo lists it as 9997300. Do you know if it is just a long torx bit or something?
@Todd Baker as far as the crank tool some times they do not fit not because of the tool it's the engine but you can tap it in in place and when you remove just becarfull when you pry it off. And as far as the head bolts it is a triple torx extra long I bought one from Snap-on or you can find it from a tool supplier.
@@TheVolvoGuy Thanks, just got to the head bolts this morning and still have not gotten the replacements in yet. I saw it was 12 point. So, a triple square or xzn. My 3/8 drill bit shank fit it in, so looks like either an M12 or M14 max. I'll probably just buy a full set anyway to add to the collection. Thanks.

I have 2008 Land Rover 3.2. Set timing with tools and have no compression after head job. I did remove the gear that drives the alternator by accident

How do you get the valve cover off this engine? I took all the bolts off all around and the ones going thru the sides of the timing cover and the passenger side of the valve cover lifts up but the driver side doesn't budge as if something is still holding it down and I dont see any other bolts please reply and help me, thanks a million
All you have to do is make sure all bolts all the way around are removed and pry on the left side corner slightly and the right side corner and it will pop just make sure to leave some in the middle so the cover doesn't fly off.
If that does not work then there is specific pliers to use to pry the cover open and there is specific spots where the pliers fit. To get the cover to come off.
Rick, Did you get your valve cover off. Iam working on my wife's car and I removed all the bolts and I couldn't get it off. It looks like in the 3.2 engine you have to get the timing chain off and the shaft drive gear off to get the valve cover off if you find another way please let me know.I put everything back together on my 2007 xc90 3.2 because I could not get the valve cover off, unless I do all that work removing all timing chains and drive shaft gear.thanks.
Hello Jed I am eager to see your next videos part#2 and part#3 in how to time this engine, I have been working on a 2007 xc90 volvo 3.2 I6 but it seems that I can't get the timing right. I know I am using the right tools but some how when I put everything together and try to turn the engine manually two full revolutions I encounter resistance like the valves are hitting the pistons, Please help and advise what am I doing wrong? I don't want to mess up the engine!

Standing in front of the car looking in the engine bay at the engine which is number one on the driver's side or the passenger side? Thank you for the info. Question please . we have 2011 XC-60 T6 with about 90K (minus 25 k when the engine was replaced by Volvo under waranty due to severe oil leak issue) . is it advisable to replace drive belt, pulleys, tensioner ,alt. decoupler pully ,water pump ,lip seal, thermostat,PCV as a preventive maintanence . Check with the dealer make sure they did not replace it already.

Hey Volvo Guy, I have a problem with my S80 Volvo. I did get the ignition switch replaced. Today when I got into the car I put the key in but when I push the button the car shut down? What do you think could be the problem? My friend checked the battery and the car came to life but when I tried to start it, it goes dead. Could it be the starter?.
Check your wiring to the starter or it might be the battery is is starting to go.
@@TheVolvoGuy It was the battery. The positive terminal was very loose. My friend tightened both of them and it started right up!!

They have to be removed together from the bottom

What’s the cylinder sequence, I mean which is the first and the sixth. Do we count from the left or right? The timing chain is in the right, so should I start with the right side?
No start from the passenger side the one closer to the timing chain is cylinder number 6.

1st 45nm 2nd 45nm 3rd 90 degrees 4th 180 degrees

@@Abdallah-Asfour you have to do 45nm 2 times in order to make sure all the bolts are even before you move on to the 3rd and 4th step also make sure to tighten the bolts in the correct sequence

I have a 2007 Volvo s80 3.2 that has recently thrown reduced engine performance warning and is now exhibiting hard starting and sputtering when it does start. I scanned for DTC codes but none are present. I installed a new battery thinking that may have been the issue but problem still present. Can anyone with knowledge of these Volvos suggest any things I can check or share their experience if they've encountered the same problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
What scan tool did you use? If engine performance warning showed up you should have some fault codes stored.
