@Susan….of course I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt when they are not being filmed that the cleaning crews bend down on their knees in the hallway and pray before entering an empty apartment or that they say prayers standing over a foul smelling, soiled mattress like shown in the video. What’s being done here may look respectful and impressive but it’s more than likely just showcasing.

I am not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination, but the fact that these men stopped to kneel and offer a prayer before entering the apartment and prayed again once in the bedroom, before starting the clean up, indicated that they have profound respect for the deceased. And that is really heartwarming in today's world where lack of any respect towards anyone, dead or alive, is so prevalent....what a cold, loveless society we've become.

Unfortunately it’s almost everywhere right now, this lonely death. Last year I met an old man in the hospital. He was wheelchair bound and rolling down a slope. I helped him out a bit and had a chat along the way. He told me his heart was failing and that he had no one at home, his brother had also died just two weeks back from the time I met him. After that encounter I’ve been sad every time I think about him. He was a funny man as well, had a loud and boisterous laugh, told me he often came to the hospital to watch people walk around. I hope such people can be given more help and care.

Sadly, due to the pandemic, people are also neglected in the hospital and die alone. My father went in with high blood sugar, but as he wasn’t a COVID patient, he wasn’t given attention. We couldn’t be with him, as there was the omicron breakout and the hospital was filled with people who refuse to get vaccinated.
My wonderful, kind, sweet, and loving father died too young and completely alone of something very survivable, because selfish people won’t get the vaccine. We were all together when we got Covid-19 early and were able to take care of each other. People need to start thinking about others and caring for each other.

One thing I noticed as a white male is that most Latinos while not having the best financial condition very frequently do have best social ones. They have tons of friends and family and are able to communicate in a very carefree way. A lot of Asian or white people have brutal pressure to be independent while family, friendships and romantic prospects come in second. Basically a lot of it is ingrained in the idea that intimate relationships weaken your ability to survive alone. At work I have friends who are Mexican, Ecuadorian or Peruvian who are 30-40 with more than 1 child who live with their parents. And then I have some white friends who are again in the same age bracket living alone for years. Environment and tradition has a lot to do with how a person grows up to become. This is why if I ever have kids, my primary focus would be to keep them as socially active as possible while being surrounded by a big family. Stimulation of parts of brain that have to do with human interaction and connection are the biggest deterrent of development of depression.

I lived in a New York City 5th floor walkup apartment. It was an old building and had 4 apartments on each floor, 2 in front/street side and 2 in the back. On the street side, lived a very old man, in his 80's and he walked up the stairs every day with his bag of groceries. he took some time to get to the 5th floor & would rest every other floor. He was a bit senial as well & would turn his back to people when they would walk by. He also wore only 2 suits & he smelled badly unfortunately. However, i would always be polite & attempt to speak with him. One day, after seeing him for 4 years he actually started a conversation with me & i was amazed. he had lived in this apartment for 50 years & his wife passed away the year before i moved in. He had nobody in his life he told me, as well. He said he lived so long by drinking water and walking everyday :) He also spoke about Whitney Houston & was so sad that she died and said it should've been him instead. Then, one morning, it was Valentine's Day, i heard Police walkie talkies in the hallway & i looked through my doors peephole & saw 3 officers in the hallway. I opened my door & they were going into his apartment. I already knew, but had to ask them & they confirmed he had passed away & our buildings Superintendent had found his body after not seeing him for days. I was saddend, evern though we weren't close. A week later, i saw that the door to his apartment was open & i was very curious to see his apartment, since i knew it hadnt been renovated for 50 years. I opened the door & went inside & it was like entering a time machine into the past! the floors were old original wood, the appliences were so old, he had a very old record player and old jazz albums too! just one bed & a small sofa. i collect records & wanted to take some of the records, since everything was going to be thrown out, but i did not. it was incredible to see how he lived, all alone in such an old way, however, moving through the streets of MODERN NYC... he always looked confused when i saw him on the block... i know he was just reminissing about the old days. I always admired him... i feel i will also pass alone, by myself & someone will find me deceased. i do have children but they are far away in another country. I'm only in my 40's but i know my destiny. I collect antique glass, vinyl records, furniture &they amass a nice amount of money. i dont want my treasures to go to waste so i've already documented all of my possesions: date of origin, value, etc and hope my children will want some of the items or someone can place my items in the right care. ONE MANS TRASH IS ANOTHERS TREASURE. God Bless these men who prayed for him & his possesions. a shame all has to be thrown out & his child wasnt concerned about his items. .. sorry for the long post, this really hit me hard...Bless You All.

To me, it seems that many of the American cleanup services are quite predatory in their prices, leaving families no choice but to clean up the bits of their own family members (which is actually quite hazardous to a person’s physical health). No family should have to pick up pieces of their family member because they couldn’t afford to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars on top of funeral expenses. I’ve also heard that the cleanup services can also be unprofessional and do a shoddy job at cleanup, which must be beyond horrible and even more traumatizing to the family. This is basically one of introverts and loners' worst nightmares. Dying and rotting alone without your family or loved ones knowing for a long time
Edit: It's really shocking to me how many people in the comments to have such weak familial bonds to the point they don't want their family and loved ones to be there for them when they're about to pass. As a non-westerner with deep familial bond in my culture i would feel saddened if i'm about to die and any of my family member and loved one isn't there for me to say goodbye, it would be even worse if i end up like the person in the video because i can't imagine the horror and trauma my family would have to see my badly rotten corpse and they would think that they've failed and abandoned me.

That's why, even if you hate people or have social anxiety, you have to commit into finding someone or if you can a support network to rely on in times of need. It's the most important thing. This comes from a person who has had social anxiety and generalized anxiety since i was a little kid. Fortunately we have a system in our country (Italy) called "consultori psicologici" where you can talk to a therapist for free for like 8 to n sessions depending on your economical situation. So i did EMDR therapy and turned out my social anxiety was actually a symptom of PTSD. Now i still have a little bit of social anxiety but I'm more aware, and most of all i know relationship are evolutionarily essential for your survival. Of course you can survive without close relationships now, but you always have to find at least one person to rely on when your body cannot function properly anymore. Seek psychological help if you cannot do it on your own, or at least make friends online (with caution of course).

I think some men die alone because they were abusers or sexual predators and all the women and children in their lives couldn't bear to be around them. People don't just abandon their family members easily or for fun. I for one, hope my father dies alone and won't be there for him because he was never there for me, my sisters, or my mother.

The cleaning crew are so respectful. The way they pray over where the man had laid is lovely to see. It's a shame that so many people live alone and have nobody to check on them. I have the fear of dying alone and not being found for a while because I am alone apart from my cats. I am almost 50 with health issues. Nobody should have to be alone unless its something that you really want or choose. Either way it is sad.

Taking care of our parents is way shorter than them taking care of us, yet most of us find them a burden when they’re old. The world we live in is just so sad and tragic sometimes. It’s true when they say parents love us more than us loving them.

If I die in my house then it is very possible that this could happen to my body and I've accepted this with grace. I only hope that I die peacefully if I am home alone. Oddly, the possibly of dying alone is a motivator to keep my house tidy and clean.

I Don't wish Kodoku-Shi even on my enemies; some elders in this generation really do feel like they have nothing to live for after they did everything they had to do; it brings back memories of my grandmother as without reassurance she felt like a burden and thought she was ugly, but she died surrounded by family in the home and i managed to get a laugh out of her... a day before she forgot who i was. the respect shown here was touching, it warmed my heart; i feel sorry for the poor fellow; i even stopped and did a silent prayer. i really am a loss for words for how messed up this world can be..

Many of Us the world over will end our days like this as a lot of us don't have children to assist us in our old age and we don't want to be a burden to other's, even when your on good terms with your siblings they have their own families to consider first and foremost which is why in a lot of cases they (family) don't find out about our living conditions until we pass away.. This is very painful for me to watch as this is more then likely my future.
